Emelie | 17 comments Everytime i ask someone this i get mixed results so i thought id put it out there;) i know a lot of people read on their kindle but some prefer regular books as for me I'm kind of in between:)

Emili--I own a Nook and a Kindle. Plus about 5k books. What I prefer to read from depends on the day. I have arthritis in my hands and wrists and on the days when that's acting up, I HAVE to go the electronic route. Simply because it weights less than a book does. And lets face it--1k books in e-format take up a LOT less space than the same number in book form. And yes, I DO have about that number of books on my e-readers. Sigh, I am an addict, what can I say. But I refuse to attend any 12-step programs, since I figure there are a lot worse things I could be addicted to, ya know? :o)

Mlpmom (Book Reviewer) (mlpmombookreviewer) | 839 comments Kindle or my phone all the way. It is just more convenient for me and I read a lot. I still get paperbacks once in awhile but for the most part about 98% of my books are e-books.

message 4: by Sally (new)

Sally (larwos) | 258 comments I also have many books on my iPad and love reading on it, but I also love reading from an actual book. However, the books can be bulky to handle and in that case, ebooks are preferable.

I have ereaders on my iPad, iPod touch and iPhone, so I can have a book with me all the time without having to actually carry a bulky book.

I just love to read no matter what the form.

message 5: by Jax (new)

Jax | 3 comments I will always prefer the actual book. The feel of the pages and especially the sound of the first "crack" on a new book. That being said, having a busy life it is much easier to track around my Kobo reader. Most electronic readers are lighter in weight than books and can be easily thrown in a purse without worrying about damage.

message 6: by a_tiffyfit (new)

a_tiffyfit | 6 comments Print book will always win out in preference, but the kindle is so incredibly convenient, can store a TON of books, allows me to get more ARCs from publishers, and I really like being able to read it in bright sun or at night (I have the paperwhite with the built in light).

message 7: by PepperP0t (new)

PepperP0t | 539 comments my Sony or my Nook preferably. I'll never be at a loss to read nor to I have to decide whether to take a book with me or not because I'm close to the end.

message 8: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisamessegee) | 120 comments My Kindle. Once I started reading on a Kindle, I never looked back. I take it EVERYWHERE with me, and it slips right in my purse. I can lay it flat or prop it up for hands-free reading while I'm eating. My bookshelves are no longer filled to bursting, and I have all my books on-hand. I like to highlight passages and search the text when writing my book reviews.

I'm also something of a Kindle junkie. I buy a new one each year. My family gets my hand-me-downs. I'm currently reading on a 7" Kindle Fire HD, with a Paperwhite as a back-up. My cat recently knocked my Fire off my desk and it went haywire. Amazon replaced it for me without even quibbling about it.

Yeah, I love my Kindle.

message 9: by MadameZelda (new)

MadameZelda I resisted for a couple years before I got an e-reader. I love the smell of a book and the feel of the pages in my fingers.
However, to be practical, books take up a lot of space. True, they're recyclable, but an e-reader saves a lot of trees in the long run.
IMHO

message 10: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Mullanix (SarahMullanix) | 8 comments My town has this great little bookstore where each and every book only costs $2 and they also take trade-ins to earn credits for free books which greatly feeds my addiction for the love of actual books. That being said, I also have a Nook which is my favorite toy on earth. There are so many wonderful self published books that are only available on an ereader, plus the cost of ebooks are often quite lower. As you can tell I'm still torn between the two. They are both fantastic in their own way, and I will most likely always jump back and forth between the two.

message 11: by Claire (new)

Claire | 9 comments i totally agree sarah. my local book shop never seems to have what i like they are willing to order stuff in but it can take up toba week. i love actual books but mykindle or phone gets me what i want in a flash. o

message 12: by Renee (new)

Renee (teenchic) | 3 comments I personally am a fan of the actual book. Not for any of the typical reasons i.e. "fresh book smell, the first doggy ear" etc. I feel those are surface reasons. I like having a collection of books that I can pick up on a rainy day or whenever and just get lost in it. Holding the physical book has a more personal feeling than using tech. I don't know; I still enjoy perusing libraries for new potential favorites to carry home. That's just me.

message 13: by Hailey (new)

Hailey (goodwhm) | 27 comments I love the feel and smell of a real book, that being said I am loving my kindle. I don't have to leave the light on for night reading, which my husband appreciates. The "pages" Don't crease and I have access to tons of books. Digital books tend to be a little cheaper and if I need a new book I can download it, I don't have to wait for the library or bookstore to open. I work night shift so that has made it a deal breaker. Kindle all the way!

message 14: by Emelie (new)

Emelie | 17 comments yeah i guess overall i love the feel of exitement when i see a new sequel or a new book that I've been waiting for I'm just like :D!!!! but my kindle is still handy for on the go and reading till 3 in the morning in the dark;)

message 15: by Gemma (new)

Gemma Newey (gemmanewey) | 15 comments I understand the ease with a kindle or whatever e-reader you are using, in that you can carry a massive amount of books about with you. However, I still prefer the tactile nature of a book - the smell, the texture ... the, everything. I may publish in e-format (only due to lack of a publisher) but my preference is with paper not wiring!

message 16: by Claire (new)

Claire | 9 comments wow im so jealous!! my kindle must b really old it doesnt have a light lol poor me :-)

message 17: by Bethany (new)

Bethany Aan (BethanyAan) | 5 comments as long as I'm reading, I don't really care. We've lost and had to replace so many books over the years, it's kind of reassuring with e-books... that if your device gets lost, broken, or whatever, you can just download it from your library again, read it on the next device or your computer. I love having a physical book collection, but when it comes to the actual act of reading, I have found that I'm not picky. :)

message 18: by Erin (new)

Erin Latimer I'm old school. Very stuck in my ways. I absolutely REFUSE to get an ereader. I have a giant library full of books (my happy place) and I love the feel and smell of books. I don't read ebooks and to be honest, I probably never will. People try to convince me because it's so convenient, but as a writer I stare at a screen 90% of my day. I don't want to have to read that way too!

message 19: by Urbanista (new)

Urbanista | 10 comments I love books, I tell ya! I collect old illustrated books and old design, architecture, and lettering books.

My house used to be filled with overladen shelves and teetering piles of books. Nice books are nice, but most popular press books are physicaaky equal to trash, especially paperbacks.

It's what's in the books that counts! And iPads, nooks, Kindles etc. hold thousands of books with minimal impact on the environment, and no additional impact on my book-choked house. I stopped buying print books because my license plate says "BOOKLVR" and print books were taking over my space. Plus, they are slooooowly becoming obsolete.

Taschen books are one of the few categories that actually should be in print. There is no need for me to have a print version of Stephen King, James Baldwin, or Maya Angelou. Their content, not their form, makes them worthwhile.

message 20: by Katie (new)

Katie (jessesgurl) | 68 comments I love both. Each have their place for me. If and when paper books become obsolete I will be heartbroken but I do love the convenience of carrying 200 books to the beach with me!

message 21: by Urbanista (new)

Urbanista | 10 comments Grammar Of Ornament Yet, stuff like this has to be in print! ;o)

message 22: by Tina (new)

Tina | 1 comments I love my Nook. I like the idea or having books ready for me when I need them. I love to curl up on my bed with candles lit & my nook in hand with the lights off after the kids go to bed. Don't get me wrong I like to be able to have the hard book in my hand & the smell of course isn't replaceable but it's just easier for me with my nook.

message 23: by Kelsie (new)

Kelsie (kelsie9211) | 1 comments As much as I love my Nook, it's just not the same as a good old fashioned paper book.

message 24: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra (bloocheese) | 10 comments A little of both. I like the portability and privacy of my iPad but sometimes you can't deny how great it feels to turn actual pages.

message 25: by Syahira (new)

Syahira I have no preference at all. Even if I have physical books, I end up reading the ebook version too. Obvious reasons, the font is too small and crowded which is troublesome when reading at night.

message 26: by ❀ Minesha ❀ (last edited Feb 27, 2013 04:08AM) (new)

❀ Minesha ❀ (minesha) | 5 comments Well, I'm kind of used to reading on my iPad. I like certain scenes so if I want to reread them, all I have to do is search up the word. And highlighting and bookmarking my favourite lines is much easier. No messy searches like in a real book. Plus, if I want to read in the dark or dark airplane, the ebooks are real convenient.
(Less paper wasted !)

Only downside is that I can't take the ipad to school. And for some reason - paper books make me connect much more to the characters.

JustJen "Miss Conduct" (just_jen) | 18 comments Once I got the kindle app on my phone and then an actual kindle, I have not touched a paperback since. It is just too convenient.

message 28: by Moon flower (new)

Moon flower (moondragonluna) Books alllllll the way. Everything is so much better when you're holding a book. You can't get that new book smell with a kindle either! It just smells like technology which is a bit crap. Kindle is for use on the bus or where you could possibly get a spec of dirt on your precious books.

message 29: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Ross (sandraross) | 5 comments I do like to use kindle, it's very convenient. But overall - I prefer paper ;)

message 30: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Fawcett | 6 comments I love reading 'proper' books and always swore I'd never use a Kindle. But I succumbed and bought one just over a year ago, and I confess I love it. I love the convenience of always having something to read. And I especially love the 'try before you buy' samples. I am much more likely to give something a whirl this way. If I enjoy the sample - though the ones I do enjoy are very much in a minority - then I buy the whole thing.

As a writer myself, I'd also like to sing Kindle's praises. It's incredibly difficult to find agents or publishers prepared to take a risk on a new author these days. Kindle offers the opportunity to get your work out there and hopefully build up a following. Marketing and promoting your work is a very steep learning curve, but I'd urge anyone who feels they have a decent story to sell to give it a try

message 31: by Chella (new)

Chella May | 1 comments I love books, but I love reading them in paper print more than in kindle. My eyes are the problem

message 32: by Tracy T. (new)

Tracy T. | 252 comments Definitely Kindle all the way. I can change the font so I don't have to read with my glasses at night and I can carry hundreds of books with me at all time.

The new book smell is highly overrated. If you miss it so much, you can probably buy a new book smell spray somewhere.

Erin Latimer Syahira wrote: "I have no preference at all. Even if I have physical books, I end up reading the ebook version too. Obvious reasons, the font is too small and crowded which is troublesome when reading at night."

That's why I think they should give you an ebook copy if you buy a physical copy. Makes sense.

message 34: by Ann (new)

Ann Gimpel | 45 comments It really doesn't matter to me. I love my Kindle, but I like the way a book feels in my hands as well. I also read off my iPad and even my iPhone. Love the way the electronics sync everything.

message 35: by Kristin (new)

Kristin (misskris7198) | 74 comments I love both. I like that I can carry 100's of books at one time with me but at the same time I like how a book feels in my hand. I swore up and down that I wasn't going to get a Kindle, but I got one about a year and a half ago. I have found so many new authors that I wouldn't have otherwise.

message 36: by Natasha (new)

Natasha McNeely (nrfarrell) | 14 comments It really depends for me. I like both options and to be honest, I don't think I really have a preference. Although, my Kindle sitting on a table just doesn't look quite as pretty as a bookcase filled with books. ;)

message 37: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (booklover723) | 6 comments i perfer reading from a book rather than my nook because when i am reading from my nook it does not feel like iam reading.

message 38: by Julie (new)

Julie Blankenship (jblanken) | 12 comments I prefer reading online, I don't want to store paper books and think its more green to read online. I user PC kindle.

message 39: by Kimberly (last edited Mar 01, 2013 12:46PM) (new)

Kimberly Morris | 1 comments I prefer reading a book. I love to hold a good book in my hands. I like turning page after page. I dont like reading books online. It just doesnt feel the same at all. What happens if you loose or break your kindle or what ever or something else happens to it then what can you do. My book shelf full of books will always be there and I can hand them down to my kids one day.

Kimberly wrote "What happens if you loose or break your kindle or what ever or something else happens to it then what can you do?"

Kimberly--that's what apps are for. I have both a Kindle AND a Nook device. Plus I have the apps for both downloaded to: 1) my phone, 2) my laptop 3) my SECOND laptop 4) my tablet and 5) my desktop. That way, even if something happens to the actual device, I still have all of them safely stored in a cloud out there in cyberland.

message 41: by Carol (new)

Carol Nicolas | 17 comments I would much prefer to read a book I can hold in my hands. I love the smell and feel of "real" books. Plus, I can go back and underline, reread and make comments in the margins, and lend it to someone else. If the power goes out, I can light a candle or turn on a flashlight and still read. When I die, all my books can be inherited by my children (and I have cupboards full!) However, I do have a Nook with almost 200 books on it. It's not as expensive as buying the paper book, and with the volume of books I read, ebooks end up saving money. But if I really love a book, I will probably buy the paper version of it too.

message 42: by Julie (new)

Julie Blankenship (jblanken) | 12 comments you can do this with ebooks. "Plus, I can go back and underline, reread and make comments in the margins, and lend it to someone else."

message 43: by [deleted user] (new)

As much as I like using my Kindle, I much prefer paperback books. Though it comes in handy when I'm reading mature books. But a book has always been comfortable in my hands.

message 44: by Lisa264544 (new)

Lisa264544 | 46 comments Definitely prefer my Kindle. Being able to adjust the font size of the text and having all my books at hand in my purse wherever I go is priceless to me.

message 45: by Erin (new)

Erin Latimer Also, I already stare at a screen all day, so I don't want to stare at a kindle. lol.

Plus I'm sort of wary of Amazon, since they seem to keep "recalling" books. IE: They vanish off your kindle mysteriously in the night, hehe.

You're so right about that! I decided to start using Nook and iBooks apps as often as possible. Even though I cannot resist Amazon's thousands of free books. Updated hourly, gah! But books do vanish in the Kindle app.

New books smell like chemicals and cheap paper, unless you're buying deluxe, leather bound, archival special editions. Even my antique books just smell kinda musty/dusty.
