Fascinates me as well....the run up and the war years themselves. I read a few good ones last year set in various countries like The Plum Tree by Ellen Marie Wiseman by Ellen Marie Wiseman, Lenin's Harem by William Burton McCormick by William Burton McCormick, Unexploded by Alison MacLeod by Alison MacLeod, City of Women by David R. Gillham by David R. Gillham and The Book of Aron by Jim Shepard by Jim Shepard. One of my faves from a few years ago was To Swim Across the World by Frances Park Anagrams|9801114].

Looking back through my list from the great distance of 2021 and realised I had counted Italy twice when I was doing this so will need to re adjust the numbering (or go for 81 entries instead if I'm not doing the whole thing).

Kiwi Sarah (mjs13) | 168 comments Updating this challenge as I had rather fallen behind entering countries over the past few years and thought it would be interesting to see if I had expanded my horizons at all. So :

No 14 - see above entry about why it's 14 again- Greece

The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood.
(This is strictly speaking set in the Underworld but the action described in the novel is set in Greece so...)

I laughed out loud on many occasions reading this. Really enjoyed this retelling of the Odyssey from Penelope's point of view.

The testament of Mary by Colm Toibin
(Set in Ephesus - now modern day Turkey)

An interesting, emotional and provocative read about the last months of Jesus' life from the point of view of his mother Mary.

Kiwi Sarah (mjs13) | 168 comments No 16 Egypt - Secrets of a Sun King by Emma Carroll

A children's book read for work - gives a fictional background to the finding of King Tutankhamun's tomb.

Absolutely loved this story of Shostakovich, set in three parts at three significant moments of his life. Wonderful reflection on the power of art.
