I had never noticed this connection until this discussion! It didn't remind me of Maxim's feelings, but rather of Mrs De Winters as she is certain for a good deal of the book that Maxim was still in love with Rebecca. This seemed to go so well with the song, that I could imagine the protagonist of Rebecca saying these things, and even became certain that the song was based on the story!

Actually, apparently Dreamworks is making a new film of Rebecca. It's still in early stages I think, but I'll definitely go see it when it comes out!
