Croyle Smith | 29 comments Okay since I am dying of sinusitis I will post this and check back tomarrow.

I went to the FSU Library to look up something in a law book and was told I had to leave because the library was for students only!
Do you think this is right ? Do you think that school libraries should be for students only?
It is my opinion that Colleges and Universities have the best libraries, with the best collections of books , NOT TO CHECK OUT but just to look things up in.
What is your thoughts on this?

If it is a state school library, and you pay state taxes I feel that you should have some access to the material. I understand that the students need access to the material in order to complete their studies, but if the material is used in the library for reference purposes, I'm not sure I would see the problem.

I know for a fact the CSU library is open to the public.

Sarah (songgirl7) My school (again, community college, so it sucks) only lets students check out books. Your student ID card is your library card.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments It's very weird that they asked you to leave, Croyle. I wonder (and this is no excuse) if that's just a law library policy.

Anyone can go into our library or any library at any University I've ever attended. I think the public universities allowed people to check out books, but you had to apply and maybe pay a fee. I'm not sure about the private universities, including the one where I'm at now.

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments hmmm. have never tried a university library. i do not live in a college town although we do have the extension school for IU here and they have a library. i think if it is a state school there should be some provision for other people using it

Croyle Smith | 29 comments Florida State University is a state University, And it is NOT local I had to drive 75 miles to get there. Then to be asked to leave because I wasn't a student made me very angry. But I will say I am timid And as my husband seems to always say You shouldn't argue with people of authority, so I just left quietly . And I still do not have an answer to my questions and I dont know who to aask or where to go for answers.

Sarah | 13814 comments I wasn't a Johns Hopkins student, but they let other local students use their library, but not the rest of the public if I remember correctly. I can't remember where they asked to see ID, if it was when you wanted to go down into the reference stacks, or request a book, or take one out, but I think that my ID was integral to the experience.

Félix (habitseven) Croyle -- this seems to indicate the libraries there are open to anyone to use stuff on-site. I think someone lied to you.

Sarah (songgirl7) Were you naked? Because maybe that's why they threw you out. If you were, you know, doing something dirty in the law aisle.

Matthieu | 1009 comments Who hasn't done something dirty in a library?

message 12: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I think I saw that movie.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I've kicked people out of libraries for doing dirty stuff, it's true. And for drinking beer.

Félix (habitseven) The stories you could tell ....

Nuri (nools) | 538 comments Every finals season, we get at least one stampede of streakers in the Main Stacks at Doe Library. Sometimes they will climb up on tables for a little dance before following the herd through the corridors. Being a cubicle-worker, I have fortunately been spared a full view of this, but I've been told, by some less-fortunate colleagues who study at the open tables, that the first thing that hits you is the BO. Have I mentioned how much I love it here?

There is also an "Anonymous Confessions" board which opens up around the same time at the Berkeley livejournal group. I really regret having read some of them. It took me a while to recover from/repress a lot of the things people confessed to doing in the library. Like. How can you even DO that in a cubicle? And not be noticed?

Um. Yeah.

Nuri (nools) | 538 comments Oh! And how could I forget WoW boy??
He was kind of famous for a little while, though no one knows who he is.

Hard at play in the one of the Doe Library cubicles. This was during FINALS season, mind you, when the library is open 24/7 and seats are impossible to secure. And he should have had to carry in his computer from at least 1/2-3/4 miles away.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Stories! Stories! Jackie, why did you have to kick people out of the library, and did you turn red? Nools, what are these confessions?

Oh Jackie why would you ever kick some body out for drinking beer? Was it before bar time?

Has anyone here ever streaked before?

message 20: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Many people have.

When I was in High School, dozens of times, we actually had the UWP listed in Playboy as one of the top streaking colleges in the nation, I believe we were #8 or 9.

My favorite time was when there were six of us in the car 3 guys and 3 girls, and the guys decided to go streaking, and the girls were to pick us up on the other side of the dorm block(cheerleading camp that week). Well the first guy was out of the car and streaking yelling streakers at the top of his lungs so that when us other two streaked by all the windows and curtains were open with people looking out.

Then to make matters worse the girls drove by with our clothes, but didn't bother to stop, so we ended up naked in the cemetery. About every ten to fifteen minutes they drove by waving to us as we hid behind tombstones. after an hour or so they through our clothes out, and then about a half hour after that they finally picked us up.

Oh to be young and stupid again.
