Charlotte (charkro) | 1798 comments I get pumpkin pie about once a year .... mainly because it's the only time that I'm motivated enough to bake it. And then I have to fight to get a small sliver of it, even though I usually bake two pies. XD

But yeah, pumpkin spice everything is already getting old. I like the occasional pumpkin spice candle (I'm a scented candle addict, lol), and I can do a couple of pumpkin desserts ... but beyond that, it's bleh. I really have no desire whatsoever to smell like pumpkin spice.

And just for the record, pumpkin spice candy corn tastes HORRIBLE!

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Oh man, pumpkin spice candy corn SOUNDS just as horrible as well. And sounds like you might have to make two regular sized ones for the fam and then a mini one for yourself on the pies. And a mini pie would be kind of cute actually :)

message 153: by Charlotte, Cheesy Cakes (new)

Charlotte (charkro) | 1798 comments LOL, yeah ... pumpkin spice candy corn was weird and new, so I had to try it. Definitely regret that one. XD

I'd try to bake a mini pie, but I'm not sure where I could hide it until I was ready to eat it. My hubby and kids are THAT good at sniffing out the treats. XD

message 154: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Definitely a live and learn situation there.

LOL, I can believe it. It always seems like when it's something good or right around the holidays some family members' sniffers get stronger and stronger. Especially in my fam cause my uncle and cousin could smell the sweet potato pies a mile away or Christmas cookies even if they were made like 3 to 4 days ago. And go wild finding them. And then have the nerve to put in a request for their OWN pies to go too. Family is a trip haha.

message 155: by Charlotte, Cheesy Cakes (new)

Charlotte (charkro) | 1798 comments ROFL! I can so see my own family doing that. XD

Words that strike fear in the center of my heart: "Oh hey, ice cream!" (Keep in mind that my kids are teenagers.) XD

message 156: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Smith (rlsauthor) | 626 comments I don't the pumpkin spice craze either, though one of my besties loves pumpkin everything, but she doesn't do all the store bought stuff. She makes it all with fresh pumpkin whenever she gets the craving.

My favorite pie is pumpkin, without a doubt. I make them at Thanksgiving and Christmas, along with sweet potato and pecan.

message 157: by Charlotte, Cheesy Cakes (new)

Charlotte (charkro) | 1798 comments Oh, I'm down with sweet potato pie. =) Especially since it's the only way my husband will eat sweet potatoes. XD

Pecan, on the other hand ... too rich for me. Not a big fan of mincemeat pie, either. But I could snarf fruit pies all day long. XD

message 158: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Yea, sweet potato pie is the only way I'll do sweet potatoes as well. Even though my mom usually cooks them with the cinnamon, brown sugar, and nut meg for her and popz. But I don't like my veggies sweet in general.

And wait, isn't a mincemeat pie a sort of meat pie? Or that a shepherd's pie? I always get the two mixed up.

message 159: by Charlotte, Cheesy Cakes (last edited Sep 10, 2015 02:55PM) (new)

Charlotte (charkro) | 1798 comments Yeah, mincemeat is sort of a meat pie ... with little bits of meat, suet, and fruits (usually apples and raisins). Very heavily spiced, too (in my opinion). XP

Shepherd pie is a meat pie with a top crust of mashed potatoes. =)

message 160: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments For sure never had a meat one then. Sound interesting but yea I'd probably not like that either. If it's not a pot pie kind of deal, I don't want to see my meats in a pie, lol.

message 161: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Smith (rlsauthor) | 626 comments Here where I live, we're famous for our fried meat pies. Think the miniature fruit pies in the folded-over crust, only filled with spicy ground beef or crawfish. Yum!

message 162: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Ooooh I might be talked into a seafood type of turn over deal. Crab can be very persuasive for me. :D A nice shrimp deal too.

I've never had a pot pie. Mom didn't appreciate university cooking where they'd do a lot of pot pies with mystery ingredients. And she was unable to make a pie crust to save her life so making a pot pie would be a challenge. I've looked at pot pie recipes and just think 'meh, why bother putting this together?'

So it's like the story about dad's mom's meatloaf where it was mostly el cheapo cream of mushroom soup and rolled oats instead of meat. I don't touch cream of mushroom soup.

Although we do have a hamburger/meatloaf recipe that I make since it's "real" ingredients and not cheap fillers. Dad prefers to not ever eat meatloaf if he can help it to this day. He'll eat it in hamburger form though.

Rachel Smith (rlsauthor) | 626 comments You can make a really good pot pie with biscuit dough too. That's how I make them when I get the yen for a homemade one. My pie crust still needs work, but I make damn good biscuits from scratch.

To be honest I've never made one from scratch either. But do love the Banquet brands. Sure it's quick and popping it in the microwave is no work at all. But there is nothing like the tender peas and carrots. Hot and steamy potatoes with bits of chicken. Truly very delish. And actually pretty quick for lunch.

I'm not partial to meatloaf of any kind. Even with the hamburger mix. I know folks have told me countless times it is just burger with some ketchup on it. I just can't get into it. It's always too dry, too thick, and always sticks in my throat. Definitely not a fave.

I'll add too that I'm not a fan of mushrooms either. So a combo of the toy would definitely having me pushing it around my plate like the little kids do, lol.

Ya know, I can admire some homemade biscuits. Although the best biscuit I've ever had came from Popeye's. Not too big, not dry, but definitely soft and flaky and beautiful. Although my folks love the big homemade biscuits to go with sausage and gravy. So best of both worlds for some.

My hamburger/meatloaf recipe doesn't use ketchup or tomato sauce in it. And most definitely no cream of anything soup.

It's ground beef, onions, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, dry mustard, an egg and some oats for a panade. Occasionally I add bbq sauce into it.

And if you want a "gross" recipe, I've seen a 'mac and cheese' recipe that was noodles, cheddar cheese soup and maybe something to thicken it up with a touch of real cheese added in.

message 168: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Smith (rlsauthor) | 626 comments Oh, Popeye's... I do so love their biscuits.

My meatloaf is fantastic. The key is to not use just ground beef. Put another meat in with a higher fat percentage, like pork or ground lamb. Delish! Most people also bake meatloaf too long, which dries it out and makes it tough.

I made a foot-shaped meatloaf for The Walking Dead mid-season premier last year. It was a smash hit with the fam.

message 169: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments I guess I'm so used to having burgers cooked in a skillet and it has all the juiciness factor. Adding other stuff and doing it in a loaf just doesn't appeal. What is a panade by the way?

Hmm, I'm sure if done the right way that mac and cheese could be interesting. But yea really have to know how to cook to bring some life to it.

My cousin's wife did the same with the foot idea. At first my mom and I didn't get it. Til we had read her caption.

message 171: by Myst (new)

Myst | 734 comments Panade is usually a bread/milk type mixture that helps ground beef type recipes. I *think* for moistness. We use egg/oats which is similar (and I think easier to work with).

I saw a foot meatloaf on fb the other day with visible onions for the nails. I'm tempted to try it, but seems like a lot of work when I could just make patties and stick in skillet.

message 172: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Smith (rlsauthor) | 626 comments That's The Walking Dead foot loaf, Myst. I did the whole shebang, and it was so much fun. Season 4 ended with some cannibals eating a character's foot and leg, hence the foot-shaped meatloaf stuff.

My sister has zombie cookie cutters, so we like to make zombie sugar cookies for season premiers too.

Yea can't have a dry loaf, lol. Almost like a really good cake.

message 174: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments I went to a craft and wine night last week. I learned about silk knots and beading. It was very cool and I was pretty good at it. I'm thinking about picking this up as a hobby. I'm currently wearing the bracelet I made. It's around my ankle cause I made it a bit too big lol.

message 175: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Oh that sounds really cool Shari. Definitely sounds interesting. And hey can never have enough anklets. ;)

message 176: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments Never ever. It looks really nice. I need some to match my bathing suits and my summer gear.

I'll have to mKe sure to have wine on hand cause the more I drank, the better I was at it. That single minded buzz focus had me in the zone.

message 177: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Yea, I bet. Definitely sounds like a great accessory to have for all occasions really. What got you interested in the classes, btw?

LOL, any particular year work best?

message 178: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments A friend signed me up to go to the class. i never really thought about it before but I enjoy doing new things with her. I trust her with this stuff. Since I'm a homebody and not social, I'd never think to do it on my own. Now that I've tried it, I wanna really get into it.

message 179: by Shari-amor, Doll Cake (new)

Shari-amor | 5275 comments Lol no particular year. Just a really nice red wine. Which is funny cause before my friend I hated red wine.....ok I hated wine, period. lol

message 180: by Dhfan4life, Honey Bun (new)

Dhfan4life | 10411 comments Sounds like the right kind of friend to corrupt you to the cultured and crafty sides of life. ;)

And that is good she helps to get you out of the house. I need more peeps like that myself.
