Alison | 4756 comments I unexpectedly went to an interesting event yesterday--The New Zealand Ukulele Festival. My sister-in-law plays the ukulele a bit and we were visiting and she wanted to go to this thing so we all went and it was really cool and very educational. Ukuleles are pretty popular here, but I never really thought of it as a "serious" musical instrument because I've only ever seen it used as a tiny background strumming singalong instrument. I know, I should be embarrassed, and I am. I soon realised the error of my ways and now fully appreciate the ukulele as a really cool, extremely versatile, "serious" instrument.

We saw international ukulele superstar (yes, there is such a thing!) James Hill play and I was really impressed. He also played one of the coolest Michael Jackson covers I've ever heard. Here's a few tunes by him:

Thank you for sharing this, Alison. Hubby bought an ukulele some time ago, but haven't had time to practice a lot yet. I'm definitely going to show him these links!

"By the by--or buy the buy--today only, Audible is offering two of my titles at $4.95 each: The Ghost Wore Yellow Socks and Somebody Killed His Editor. That means you can get two of my most popular audio titles for under $10.00 and still have this month's credit to use on something like the Male/Male Mystery and Suspense Box Set: 6 Novellas box set (which has six novellas). That's the one Ame posted earlier, yes? I thought the words and performance to be very powerful, even more so because it was performed by teenagers.

Tinny elevator music? Uh, that sounds painful. At least the carol is a nice one. I'm already dreading the overkill of pop ballads during the next weeks ;-)

Varecia | 956 comments My daughter asked about 80's music after reading a fashion book and deciding that the 80's were the most awful fashion decade of the last century (not that I would oppose this ;-)
In the end we listened to Peter Gabriel's album "So" and I was really surprised how well it held up. My daughter enjoyed the Sledgehammer video very much, it has such a handmade charme to it (and I remember how modern we thought it compared to the other popular videos...).

Clever idea to use Shazam! I can't get over how popular with teens and twenties is music from the 1970s and 80s, which I remember and don't always think much of.

The 90's were my decade. Followed by the 80's, I think, and then EVERYTHING before the 80's, which includes stuff from the 40's, 50's, 60's, and 70's. Yeah, I like a wide variety of stuff, mostly thanks to my parents.

message 4422: by HJ (last edited Dec 03, 2015 08:47AM) (new)

HJ | 3603 comments Thinking about it, one reason I'm surprised that music from the 1970s and 80s remains popular is that when I was a teen in the 1970s in the UK we did not listen to or like any older music. (I have to revise that comment, thinking further -- some people liked the Beetles and others the Rolling Stones, but the Beetles and Stones were the exceptions and I think they were seen as having resulted in the new music we were listening to.)

We all liked different types of music (and that was fine) but it was all current music.

That's interesting. Do you think that it was maybe more difficult than to come by older music? Or the devices to play them on? I remember that my grandparents gave me some gramophone records and I had to organize an old fashioned gramophone first just to listen to them. Today it is so easy to listen to everything - I remember how much time I spent as an older teenager hunting the music from the 20's and 30's I liked. The records were expensive, the nearest shop was in Cologne... Today I just sort through Youtube and consorts and can listen to the most obscure little songs, which is nice.

message 4424: by HJ (last edited Dec 03, 2015 01:12PM) (new)

HJ | 3603 comments For much of the time we were using same medium which had been used for the previous decade, vinyl records! But you're so right about how difficult it was to listen to the music you wanted to hear. We really relied on the radio; I can remember listening all day just to hear my current favourite twice or three times, because there was almost no way to just listen to the song you wanted unless you bought the record (and you couldn't buy all of them; in fact, I didn't buy any).

We used to listen to the top 20 rundown with fingers poised over the record button on our cassette machines, because that way we could replay the ones we loved. I hated the DJs who talked over the intro or before the end of the song! Mix tapes were a true labour of love.

I also remember listening to the radio and waiting to hear my favourite songs so I could tape them. I was always ready with a tape! Even ten years ago I was still regularly listening to my old tapes. I miss mix tapes! My friends and I used to make mix tapes for each other in high school. Such a labour of love, HJ! I still haven't found a satisfying way to listen to music digitally. I miss having tangible music and it's so hard sometimes to actually find the things I want to listen to in my music collection. I still buy CDs sometimes because I like having the music physically. While I'm at it...hey you kids, get off of my lawn! :)

Alison | 4756 comments Here's a random selection of favourite songs I've been listening to lots this week:

Feeling Good by Muse (This is one of my favourite covers (songs?) ever. I love the Nina Simone version dearly, but I think this one is powerful in a very different way.):

Left Hand Free by alt-J (A great song to dance to! This band is so interesting musically, and this song is so different from the rest of their songs.):

Leather by Tori Amos (Classic Tori Amos! A theatrical and gorgeous song.):

I taped a lot of songs more than once and I was pretty much in love with my DJs so I loved taping them too. I've got the entire final morning show of my fav guy on tape. But I know where he is now, so when I'm home, I can listen to him still on a new station. Cause, yeah, I still love his voice and miss him in the mornings. I'm weird. Because of one DJ, I wanted to do that for a living, but ended up not doing that.
