What we're listening to

This is a little bit more info on Jordan's reference found on this site:

Even though Tolkien himself suggested The Return of the King for the title of the third volume, he realized that it would spoil the ending of his story. He later proposed that The War of the Ring would suit the final installment better. Allen & Unwin dismissed this notion, and were eventually able to talk Tolkien into accepting the initial subtitle. They were less successful, however, in coaxing the author into appreciating The Two Towers.

I mean come on, 1.99! 2.99! That's the price of a cup of fancy coffee! How can I resist?! I don't buy every single one, but a couple a week at least. I get an email notification of it every morning, so I don't even have to remember to go and look for it on the site.
It's making me try out books I might not have ever read. It's expanding my horizons.

You know, I don't know that they said what title he preferred.
I seem to recall in the books that Aragorn was ready from the start to be King, but in the movies they made him a little more reluctant. So, yeah, I'm not sure what the title would have given away either, but there you have it.

I saw that a few days ago, but have to say I wasn't impressed by the sample.

Wow, excellent news! I hope it gets you some new fans, as well as enabling any of your old fans who don't already own these excellent audiobooks to buy them.

Oh dear. It looks like I will finally have to buy an MP3 player and figure out how to transfer audiobooks to it. I've been holding off getting on Audible by borrowing CD books from my library to listen to in my car--hey it's how I'm actually keeping up with the mainstream authors I read. But you guys have REALLY been tempting me with all the great comments you've been leaving for Josh's audiobooks.
My sister advised me to skip any cheap mp3 players and just go with an Ipod. Are Ipod and audible working together okay? I seem to remember people discussing some problems with that. Audible books aren't on I-tunes, right?

ETA I just looked quickly at Audible's website and this probably isn't correct. Look at Audible's section on compatible devices.

You can use iPod of any type, even the small, cheapest ones which is the one I have. I do prefer though to use my phone and the audible app.

Oh, Perry. For some reason the actor Marc Andre Grondin has always been Perry in my mind.

If you don't want to buy a new device you can always play the audiobooks from audible on your pc or laptop, either via browser or the audible download manager (to listen to them off-line).

Yesterday I went to a concert with jazz singer Melody Gardot. I was invited by a friend and didn't really know anything about the artist beforehand, and thus had few expectations.
It blew me away. An eclectic mix of styles, rocky jazz, ballads, even a French chanson-like song and extremely gifted musicians. And that voice!
It must have been one of the best concerts I have attended in years.
She had an amazing rapport with the audience as well.
Before the concert we (there were four of us) shared pizza, red wine and conversation at a restaurant.
Such a lovely evening on a cold November evening.
I bought a used iPhone 4 just for the audible app. It works great! My MP3 player is so old, it wouldn't do audible books, even if there was still room for things other than music! Lol.

I mostly want to listen while driving--which has become an excellent way for me to catch up a bit on my tbr list. However, you have reminded me to use my computer to check that the downloads worked. And to hear some of the wonderful narrator voices!

So no problems with the app? I looked at the rating for it and several people are very unhappy with the latest update, saying that their books won't play now.
Of course, these things can be temporary but they don't return to change their rating.

LOL! Did I tell you that after my holiday in England I thought about buying a used iPhone? ;-)
But I still have to persuade myself, because I suspect that if I would have an iPhone instead of a very old fashioned cell phone, I would start to use it instead of letting it rest in a drawer ;-). I'm not sure I'd like this development...

I actually even have purchased used old ipods.. Anything with a screen, wifi access, and an application download capability. It will pop up saying the most recent audible version won't work on it, but then asks if you'd like to download the old version. Works wonderfully. :-D

LOL. Well, Antonella, I see we have similar tastes in phones. I also have a VERY old phone, which resides in my car and is mostly turned off. Unfortunately, it is starting to not accept a charge and I feel I should enter the 21st century and get a digital one. I will still keep my Tracfone prepaid subscription though. $100 or thereabouts per year is a LOT cheaper than 60-100/month for a cell plan.
I have to admit, I've been thinking perhaps I should simply get a cellphone which has ye olde MP3 player with it. I just need a 12-year old to help me pick something out and to help me set it up. ;-)

Oh, that must hve been a wonderful concert. She has such a gorgeous voice. I have lots of songs of her in my Spotify lists.

I had a little trouble with the app on Android after one of the last updates. I asked the support for help and they were fast and very helpful. Turned out I had to delete the cache of the app. That was all. It's been working without any hickup since then.

You can download Kindle and Audible apps to your tablet, laptop, or mobile phone. I was able to add both to my Nexus phone and I'm probably the least tech savvy person I know. Of course, there was much wringing of hands and gnashing of teeth. :D

Recently I met a relatively young someone (thirtyish?) who had never met a person without cell phone and found also my cell phones habits a rarity ;-).

Great idea, Marge. When the savvy twelve year old helps you buy a cell with MP3 and installs everything, can you send him or her my way?

I wanted to comment before: yes, this sounds like a lovely evening, thank you for sharing.

I was knitting hats while listening. I have wanted to start knitting again. Finished a hat for Michael and started one for either me or for a Christmas present for my brother.
Not sure which book I'll start tomorrow on the way to work, though I did download Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone audiobook. It's been a long while since I've re-visited that series. Good knitting listening there.

LOL. Yes, that will be me, too.
Thank you all for answering my questions. I will try to take the info and move into Audible. But first I will have to remember to purchase and download Josh's books on Monday. I have a feeling Amazon will remind me. They've only been sending me two or three emails per day about all their "sales."

I love when something like this happens — when a concert (or an art exhibition or something similar) just blows my mind away sometimes quite unexpectedly, even. And when one combine's that with good company, pizza and red wine... well, that really is perfect. :-)
And now I'm listening Melody Gardot from YouTube. She is, indeed, amazing.

I'm currently working on a jacket for one of my nieces.
I only had one issue with one of the updates and when I contacted support through the online chat function, they were very helpful and got me going again.
If you lack 12-year-olds, try your public library. They might have helpful books or even classes you can take to learn how to use your new gadgets.

You big meanie! Whadda ya mean, you won't share? Thanks for the giggle of the day, Marge. Today is a day of endless possibilities when anything is possible. *grumble* except buzzing through the TBR pile in one day. :-(

And I actually finished the hat and scarf from that gorgeous yarn I purchased in Seattle for myself, and I actually wear it! Usually I'm always giving things away, but that yarn was so pretty, and I did buy it as a souvenir LOL
I will likely finish the scarf I started in Seattle a year or more from now. I'm a lazy knitter.
I finished Cop Out on my way to work this morning, which I'm kinda sad about. I really liked that one, as is evidenced by me listening to it twice in one year. :-)
My next audio book will be Geek Love, a book about a carnival. The last of my carnival themed books, unless I continue two of the trilogies I started.

I enjoyed all three of those Toronto cop stories on audible! I'm someone that gets on a roll, and after I finish one, if the others are available I HAVE to find a way to get them :-D
I listened to Winter Kill on my drive to Tucson on Tuesday. Gomez Pugh rocked it. It's always interesting how listening to a book I've read gives new insights. I didn't remember how well Rob and Adam "riff" off of each professionally, exchanging and bouncing off each other's thoughts once they start to trust each other. Definitely another very well done Josh audiobook!
Jim Dale's readings of the Harry Potter series are now available on Audible. I listened to HP and The Sorcerer's Stone today on the drive back to Albuquerque with my 26 year-old daughter. I originally read this book to her when she was eight. : )

I actually checked those versions with Jim Dale out at the library. Great for long road trips with the kids. They had them in CD and audiobook via the Overdrive App for MP3 or mp4s(iTunes)
It's lovely how these stories stand the test of time :-D

I have the the Harry Potter audiobooks read by Stephen Fry. Really, really good to listen to.

I love Melody Gardot! She's very cool. How fun that you got to see her, Anne. I"m glad you enjoyed it. Here's one of my favourite tunes by her:

Speaking as a frequent audio-book listener, a good narrator makes the story. So if there's a good one out there, by all means re-use him. Just have Jake's voice trademarked, hehe.
