What we're listening to

I like Jason's Dark Horse, but I do think Derrick does a better job. Or maybe it's because Derrick's voice...his reading of the characters and their dynamic matches my own. Johanna mentioned the gravity and warmth in Dan's voice, and that's exactly right and exactly how I pictured Dan. Just as calm and assured--and kind--as someone could be. A rock. A white knight. :-)

That one is really tough because I think Chris...there's this little teasing thread of humor in his reading that I love. But I love Paul's voice and I think he did a great job with the narration, so that's a case where I like them both for different reasons.

Well, and maybe that was a mistake on my part because there are several duplications in that collection and it was insanely expensive to produce. If readers end up passing on it because of the duplicates that will be a big fat ouch.
I'm always interested in hearing the different narrations but that's probably my music background. I can spend hours comparing arrangements of songs. :-D In fact, I've been known to drive people crazy with such experiments.

What did you guys think of Winter Kill? Did you like Gomez's reading or do you prefer his work in the PsyCop series?

By which I mean, do you like his voice for mystery or better for spec fiction? I've been thinking about that lately. About what type of voice works best for mystery.
I love Kevin R. Free's humor so much, and I feel like he is the perfect narrator for humorous mystery.
But thrillers are a different kind of thing, and I'm not sure I've found my ideal thriller voice yet. Chris Patton might be good for thriller. It's hard to separate him from the AE series though.

you're right about Kevin R. Free, his voice is so soft and sweet, and he's perfect for Kit. Though his J.X. in All She Wrote was seriously hot, he pulls that off no problem. He does have a wonderful sense of humor, literally laugh out loud.
kind of the same thing w/Chris Patton since Adrien is a little timid and sweet, but he also has a great delivery. I'm finishing up The Hell You Say and I was in the car when I heard that line about the things Adrien "doesn't understand" and he thinks "yeah, why is reality tv so popular and how can grown men wear capri pants" oh wow, I had to play it over several times... SO funny!
The narrators on In Sunshine or in Shadow (short stories volume I) did a great job, there was one in particular I loved... I'll go back and see if I can figure out who he was.

I am listening in the moment to Winter Kill, but have problems to link my interpretations of the characters with Gomez's voice. It is the first time, that I think someone reads too slowly, but I like the dialog scenes. In the weekend I can hear it over loudspeaker, that's different too.

Still in the middle of Winter Kill and I didn't get PsyCop one. I one and a half hours of Winter Kill on the drive home tonight and looking forward to more of it next week. There's a lot of travelling back and forth ahead.
I think Winter Kill is special/a challenge not only because it's a more serious mystery and thriller but because of the changing POV. I like how the narrator solved that by using a completely different voice for the narrative part. It's a bit like a voice from the off so the character voices stand out more in dialogue. I like the men's voices, Frankie's not so much. It's more because of the accent probably.
I think he managed to bring out Rob's and Adam's characters very well. Rob - more easy going, younger sounding while they're of similar age, Adam - strict, high expectations of others and of himself particularly and still an underlying vulnerability.

I'll let you know then. I really liked Gomez' in Psycop, thought he was great but I did have a bit of a trouble with Jacob's voice to begin with. Then I got used to it, but I still somehow expected sex on sticks like Chris did Jake and that didn't happen. Vic's voice however was excellent.

I agree, Pugh's Jacob is more like a body building beach boy than I would have expected... a little preppy, right?
Trioseven7 wrote: "Josh, did you ever listen to the THIRDS series by Charlie Cochet? The narrator is Mark Westfield and he is very good."

The narrator does a great job, there are a lot of characters and some accents and he keeps it flowing really well.
KC wrote: "I was listening yesterday to Baby, It's Cold and enjoying every second. Awesome narration!"
I really liked Michaels's narration--those two stories call for youth and diffidence, and I feel like his voice captures that. Plus I love his Rocky. And the humor he brings to Baby, it's Cold.

Yay!!! :-)
Yay!!! :-)

I could do that for you, gladly. ;-)

So on my walk home from work after dealing with the fight, I decided I needed something easy and familiar to listen to, in terms of audiobooks, rather than the new one about a strange circus I'd been planning on listening to next. So I ended up picking Cop Out. I'd forgotten how slow the narrator reads, but it works, and helped get my own emotions under control and my mind off the fight. Cop Out is such a sad story with a wonderfully happy ending, I love it!

This has been sooooo enjoyable. I wish everyone took the time or had the option to handpick such quality narrators. I enjoyed Derrick, and a few times I almost heard Vic in Pugh's voice, but then really heard the different nuances he put in and forgot about Psycop for the rest of Winter Kill. Very nicely done.

I really enjoyed that series Jordan. So sorry you had to deal with a fight? I wish you a restful weekend.

Looking forward to that one too!!

oh wow, the narrator on the anthology is so much better... no comparison. Chris Gabauer ended up being fantastic. I listened to both versions and in the end, Gabauer totally won me over with his ability to switch between Austin, Jeff and the narrator so flawlessly, and that last scene between Jeff and Austin almost broke my heart - so sweet. Not to mention his reading of the description of finding the corpse in the wine cellar - eeew! Very good - worth buying this version if you want to listen to this one.

If you're asking if we'd enjoy hearing Chris read some of your other books, that aren't AE, I would. It's might be hard to let go of Adrien at first but, Chris is such a good narrator that I think I could. If I can accept a favorite actor in different roles, I should be able to do that with a narrator, too.
I was so impressed with his work on AE that I actually looked up other books he's narrated. I haven't picked any of them up yet because I still have a list of books to go through but, I'm definitely considering it. I asked my kids if it's weird to buy a book mainly based on the narrator and they said not at all. I'm going to trust their opinion on that ;-D

That's a very good point you make.

Oh, I think Chris is totally up to the task, the problem is all me--and of course, as you say, my worry that readers associate him so strongly with Adrien. But at this point, it's been a while and I've reused narrators. I'm not sure if he's still doing book narration. I know it's not his favorite thing.

Not all you, Josh. I'm sure I didn't help anything when I couldn't get Gomez's Vic out of my head when listening to Aleks' audio book.
I think I'm better at seeing movie actors in different roles when the movie is short. Tv actors I've always had a hard time with. When CSI came out, it took me at least a season or two before I saw Greg Sanders as Greg and not Jacob Resh from The Net. Lol. So, really, it's just me, and I'm probably in the minority, so just go with the flow, I say. I'm just weird. :-P

And I like Gomez Pugh a lot more in Winter Kill then in Psycop. I'm not far in but I really like his narration. Even the somewhat awkward (view spoiler) was so much better in his narration than in my mind when I read it ;)

oh my god, it would be worth listening to just to hear Pugh narrate that!
I'm thinking that when/if I get my 50K written this month, I will get myself an audiobook for a little prize. I've been thinking about getting The Return of the King because it's one of the more expensive titles on my list. (Did you know Tolkein didn't want that for the title of the book because it gave away the ending? He was overruled by the publisher.) Anyway, now you've all got me wanting Winter Kill. Oh, decisions!

What did Tolkien want to title it?
I don't know that Return of the King gives it away because as I recall I was so confused throughout the Two Towers I wasn't sure what king was returning where. ;-D
Of course I was in high school, so everything was fairly confusing to me then.

Chris does a very good job with X. Aratare's Mermen series beginning with Transformation. And I had NO problem disassociating him from Adrien there. I know a few people that pick audios for narrator voices, and he's one.. I also like Iggy Toma and Michael Stellman recently, as well..

I personally like much, much better the narrator from the MM Box Set, but I know of someone else who preferred the Paul Fleschner one. They're very different. The Fleschner one, I found it to be a more dramatic/emphasized narration style, while the narrator from the MM set has a more...quiet style which really worked for me.
