This is an interesting point, Susunok. Many of my favourite audiobooks were recorded in that way, reading rather than acting, and I like it just as much. I find it a little surprising when the narrator of a new audiobook is criticised for "just reading".

Just finished The Hobbit. The narrator was fabulous. But the movies definitely did not follow the story very well. So much interesting parts were left out. :-( the movies would have been better for sticking to the plot!

This was also really good to listen to while being sick. My eyes hurt too much to watch tv, so this was perfect.

Jordan, I'm sorry you're feeling so ill. I think that audiobooks are perfect when you just want to lie still with your eyes closed.

Idamus I just finished book 2 in this series Eyes to See quite good paranormal, not m/m though :-(

Now I'm sad that I'm out of credits as I really want book 3

Susinok | 5205 comments Ringworld by Larry Niven as not lost any of it's magic to me. I still love the characters and the entire idea. I'm very pleased that an old favorite stands up to the test of time. Some science fiction does not do that very well.

Carlita Costello | 1219 comments I'm listening to The Boy With The Painful Tattoo and laughing out loud as I drive home from work. I expected that; however the narrator's ability to brilliantly capture Kit's frustration, pain and crippling fear was not. When Kit shouts at JX voice cracking, "I can't take anymore," I seriously teared up. Kevin R. Free is masterful.

HJ | 3603 comments I've just finished listening to Trick Or Treat by Kerry Greenwood, and really enjoyed it. She wrote the Phryne Fisher series, which has been very successful on TV (but which has not been broadcast in the UK). I wasn't sure I'd like the Corrina Chapman series because the main character is a baker (I'm not a foodie), but they're amusing and good mysteries. They're contemporary and very well narrated.

They're not broadcast in the UK? That's surprising. Although I guess there's no reason everything Australian would make it to the UK. I just sort of imagined it would be an obvious one.

I also find it surprising that they're not broadcast here, given the seemingly endless liking for period drama and for crime shows. I don't think we get much Australian TV here, actually, now I come to think of it.

I have given up on ever finding The Feds

Susinok | 5205 comments I am sadly setting Ringworld by Larry Niven aside. It has not stood up to the test of time. That's a danger with science fiction, though it's not the science that is out of date, but the writing itself. I just can't handle Louis's constant lecturing of the wide eyed ingenue. I'm done.

But!!! Started Among the Living by Jorden Castillo Price. MUCH better! Whew!

I started listening to it yesterday, very good if a bit different than how i imagined it.

Also listened to Charlie Cochet's Mending Noel, it's a sweet and short Christmas story.

Yeah I think he is. He needs some assertiveness training. :) And not submissive really, he just doesn't want to deal with the fallout of someone else's unhappiness. Probably why he stuck with David. At the time it was just easier.

It is only the Brahms/Schubert concert for free, for the rest (live streams and concert recordings) you need a ticket or subscription, but still it is a very good deal.

I'm still slightly iffy on Gomez's voice for Jacob, but yeah, he's definitely got Vic's voice down pat. I've already been listening to Psycop over and over again when I get into an audio rut. :-)

I started The Charioteer the other night. It's slow going. I've so far only been listening to it while attempting to wash more dishes each night. lol.

I really like the narrator's regular voice. I'm not so big on his attempts at voicing children and women, especially Laurie's mother. I've finally gotten to the part where he's in the hospital, so the voices are sounding more natural right now. :-)

Mtsnow13 | 1115 comments I'm currently listening to Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking and find it quite interesting.. It's on sale on audible right now...(but I also found it at the library.)

In this world where everyone is 'talking', whether it's via social media, our workplaces, or entertainment, it's like the canary in the coal mine when someone is actually saying it's okay to be an introvert, despite how many around us make us feel.

I've never been motivated by Money or promotions, I dislike conflict, I feel drained after being around a lot of people, even if I've enjoyed myself.

In the business world, I'm made to feel as if there's something inherently wrong with me because I don't mind solitude, And do not have the goal of climbing the corporate ladder.

And I like the fact that there actually is a difference between 'shyness' and 'introversion'. This book explains there is room for both introverts and extroverts in society.

I always thought it interesting that Jacob is so tolerant of Vic's pill habits. Though, really, how could he not be? And then Vic realizes he's probably been on pills for their entire relationship and wonders about that and tries to stop. Really, they're both kind of adorable about it.

Everybody talking and nobody listening. Has that ever been truer than it is in this day and age? :-D

Not only is it permissible to not take part in social media, I think it's advisable to limit the amount of time we spend online.

That is definitely one of my goals for this year. I've been moving in that direction anyway, but there's always been a little twinge of guilt. The knowledge that it's part of my job to get out there and hit the social media platforms.

But more and more I think that I want to live the life I planned for myself when I was first dreaming of (and working toward) writing for a living. Okay, the castle by the ocean is out but I can surely manage to avoid spending five hours a day watching twitter and reading blogs that mostly irritate me anyway. :-D

There has to be quality of life or what is the point?

Not that I don't have a very good life, and I know that most writers would kill for what I've managed to achieve, but that constantly buzzing connection is tiring and distracting. Not just for me, not just for writers, for everyone.

I think it's part of the reason for the increasing number of blowups over...what? It's like people reacting to conditions of overcrowding, only the overcrowding is virtual.

Anyway, my rule now is I will only participate in social media that brings me pleasure and adds value to my life -- this group is the perfect example. My FB pages are another. I enjoy blogging, so I'll keep blogging. But I'm not going to try and be in every group and list and page. And, more difficult, I'm going to try not to feel guilty about that.

In the book, what is their explanation of shyness versus introversion?

A very, very, VERY good decision, that.

And forget the guilt. Instead of that be proud of yourself for making such a sane decision. You will be happier this way!

I couldn't agree with you more, Josh. I've gone through and cleaned up the 'Groups' that I was somehow joined to in FB, and decided I'm going to try to stick to posting positive images or messages vice feeding into negativity or venting if at all possible.

“Shyness is the fear of social disapproval or humiliation, while introversion is a preference for environments that are not overstimulating. Shyness is inherently painful; introversion is not.”
― Susan Cain, Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking

There are actually quite a few quotes listed from the book here on Goodreads:
