OMG, The Charioteer just went down in price for me! $4. Can't beat that!

Yeah, I love Faith and Fidelity but the sample put me off the audio.

Oh, maybe that's why it wasn't already on my wish list? I could have sworn I knew it was on audio before. Oh well. Thanks for the reminder!

Alison | 4756 comments I've been listening to The Student Prince audiobook and I've really been enjoying it. I picked it up because it was free and my experiences until now with free audiobooks have not been too flash, so my expectations weren't very high. I am pleasantly surprised by the good quality. It's read by the author and she's done a quite a good job with it so far.

So Saturday night I spent three plus hours listening to Out of the Blue.

Lord Above they are at it like minks in that book. Jeeze. I mean, I know it was wartime and everything, but... :-D

I do think there is some very nice stuff in that story though. I was pleasantly surprised. I was trying to think if I did the right thing without detailing one of the character's death. I does feel abrupt, but then I think that was part of what I was trying to get across. The endless monotony of everyone dying sooner or later. And that you just had to grab what you could.

It's quite a sad little tale. I'd forgotten how really sad and stark it is. So maybe all the sex balances it in a way.

I reread the story last summer, and yes, it's quite steamy, but the steaminess captures the fragility of life for these guys, the sadness, grief, desperation, grabbing every moment because it counts. I remember feeling distraught yet hoping against hope afterward, still, i guess, not knowing what happened after the story ended. So, umm, coda pretty please someday?

I do remember the sadness of this story, but not the sex at all. WHAT'S WRONG WITH ME?!

Anyway, I liked this one a lot. I think it's very special in many ways. By the way, I had to go and take a look what we've been discussing about it in Out of the Blue story discussion topic. Many interesting posts there.

I think the truth lies somewhere in the middle! Josh, because you hate listening to sex scenes it felt like a lot of sex. Johanna, you rightly remembered that the sex revealed character and relationships plus the feeling that they had to make the most of life so didn't especially remember the sex because it felt right.

i think KC said it well!

HJ | 3603 comments So does the fact that you were listening to it mean that we can expect an audiobook release soon of Out of the Blue?

That will be a challenging one. First, that they make through it all alive. Second, that they find a way to be together. Where? Somewhere in the American West? In the U.K.? I so want to believe that against all odds this was possible.

And beautifully said, KC.

I used to work in an Italian restaurant so I listened to WAY too much Christmas music this time of year. Now I can only listen to the Rat Pack and traditional Italian favorites for so long before they start to drive me crazy!

My favorite: Gah! ;-)

Susinok | 5205 comments I love the Rat Pack! I love 50s jazz.

I don't like Christmas music in general, though. I was burned out on that when I worked the movie theater complex. We had a Christmas tape that was on a WAY too short loop, with no less than five versions of Silver Bells and three versions of White Christmas.

Calathea | 6034 comments Yesterday I listened to some Christmas songs and forgot that Little Christmas Tree by Nat King Cole was in the collection. I have no explanation but this song reduces me to tears every time I hear it. And it's not a sad song and I love it! I don't really know what's happening there. I usually delete it from the playlist. :(

Is that the same as "Oh Holy Night"? That one always gives me chills. Josh Groban's version is very nice.

Tonight, I think I'll listen to one of my favorite albums, Sarah McLachlin's Wintersong.

There are a few random Christmas songs I'll listen to no matter what time of the year, but in general, I'm really not a big fan. I don't have any reasons though, that I can think of. They just don't do it for me.

ETA: This is one of my favorites though:
John Lennon's War is Over

ETA2: I've never seen the official video before now. Um, that's definitely got some disturbing pictures of war. You've been warned.

Jordan - it's Amazon's Whispersync. Only some Kindle books and Audible titles are linked (here it says "Whispersync for Voice-ready"). I'm a bit concerned that this must mean that authors get less. But an advantage is that you can read on your Kindle and then listen to the audiobook and the two are synchronised; you don't need to find your place in the other medium.

Yes, but you have to buy the Kindle version first to get the Whispersync price on the audiobook.

Actually, now that I think about it, this isn't the reason for some of the discounts I've been getting. I just had one book drop in price but I don't have the kindle edition, I bought it in print (so the author could sign it!). And even those that I already have in kindle format aren't all at a low price at the same time on audible. I dunno. But it works for me since I'm not a member. I just occasionally go through my wish list and see what's dropped and buy it.

message 3190: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (valerie_c) | 1519 comments I have no idea how they decide which books get Whispersync. Sometimes I wait on new releases because they will be discounted after they've been out for a while. I also have a big wish list that I check on now and then.

Speaking of Star Trek singers, Brent Spiner (Data) has put out a couple of albums of jazz standards. He has a lovely voice and it's quite fun to listen to Data singing so nicely. :)

Music IS emotions. Yes. I think this is why music can be technically "wrong," but still so very moving and powerful. I think music more than any other art has the power to move people to tears. Just melody alone can do it.
