Idamus I have visited a wi-fi (and the friend who owns it), so now I'm listening to The Dark Farewell again, much, much better volume on my phone

Better volume on your PHONE? Really? Why would that be, I wonder?

I have an iPhone ;-)

No, I have no idea, it just works, when I complained to Audible about low volume (had the same issue with a bunch of DSP books) they just advised me to try a different format, and now I've run out of formats to try so those books are on my phone instead

(Format 1 was fun though, it sounded like the narrator was on Helium) :D
Format 4 fixed about half of the DSP books so I'm sticking to that from now on

The cops I've talked to have said that taking a cop's gun away from him is like cutting off his right arm and leaves him feeling weak and defenseless, like half a man, and all that. Which is only going to be worse if they're on forced leave for something. So, no, unless there's good reason to take it away, (like he's committed murder and in jail) they don't.

I thought that was interesting. Not something I'd ever thought of, but it does make perfect sense.

Side note: I also talked to a guy who was doing his best to train cops to use their left hand more often, for things like eating and drinking. He said often, cops will have a drink in their right hand when something goes down and they don't know what to do because the mind won't let them drop the glass to draw the gun. But if the glass is already in the non-gun hand, then there's no problem with mind over matter. But, this was just one guy and isn't standard training, though I'm thinking it should be!

Now that's very interesting. I've got a PI, ex-cop character in a story I'll be writing later this year. I'm totally going to have him do stuff like drinking etc with his left hand. :D Maybe have the other guy even think he's left handed at first.

Thanks!

Thanks for explaining, Jordan. I thought that taking a cop's badge away means suspending him, so if he's suspended then he doesn't need his gun, and that's why they'd be taken away together?

message 2661: by HJ (new)

HJ | 3603 comments It makes perfect sense to train people who may need to draw a weapon to use their non-dominant hand as much as possible for other things, and I'm surprised it isn't already part of police training. What about armed forces? The same logic would apply. (And for stories about them.)

Hj wrote: "Jordan wrote: "Hj wrote: "Jordan wrote: "A Reason to Believe. But I did catch one cop error in it this morning that every writer and tv show makes. Matt's boss threatens to take away both his badge..."

Yes, basically, having his badge taken away means he's suspended.

The other reason the gun isn't also taken away is that for most cops they're using their own gun, bought and paid for by themselves, not the department. I think it's extremely rare for a department to furnish that kind of weapon. (But things like shot guns in patrol cars are a different matter and do belong to the department.) So, legally, I don't think the department can take away the officer's own gun, unless they need it to test bullets in an officer involved shooting. For this reason, most cops usually have a backup weapon at home so they can keep working. And because they have a backup weapon, taking away their gun is kind of pointless.

Of course, I'm not a cop, never was one (though in high school I was applying to colleges to become one for a brief period) but all of my knowledge comes from the Writer's Police Academy, which is just the best, most fun, anyone can have on earth, hanging out with cops. :-) And I'm a bit sad I'll be missing it this year. But maybe in 2015, I'll get to go again.

Also, another thing writers get wrong, since we're on the topic of cops and guns and I'm remembering a few tidbits I've learned over the past few years... they never leave the safety on. Their weapons are always ready to fire at a moments notice because you just never know when you're going to need it. And having taken the Firearms Training Simulator (FATS)myself, I can attest that this is true! It's scary how fast situations can get out of control, or how you don't know what's going on in a situation you're entering that's behind closed doors. This is a huge thing movies get wrong especially. They like the dramatic effect of racking the slide and all that. And in real life there is no time for dramatic effect... if you want to live.

One of the simulations I was doing involved an 11-year-old girl wielding a shot gun in a very good attempt to protect her father from a police officer trying to arrest him. Once you've been through that, you realize that all bets are off with anyone who happens to be human, doesn't matter who they are, they could easily want to kill you. No wonder cops are suspicious of everyone and have rough home lives.

Yeah, when I learned that, I was at first thinking "Oh! That makes perfect sense! I wonder why I never thought of that before?" And then found out it's not typical training. "What? How could it not be?"

I am pretty sure it's not training in the military either. Though it should be there too.

Thanks Jordan. Gun ownership and use are so tightly controlled here in the UK that I didn't think of a cop using his own gun. The few armed police we do have must use official weapons which are logged out and in.

That's a good thing to point out. Gun laws are so different here. It's like everybody has a gun. It's like going to Texas where everyone has a white stetson hat. I was in the Dallas airport and everywhere I looked there was a white stetson. White. Not black. Or any other color. lol.

And for those who want to know more, but can't make it to the WPA, here's a link to Lee Lofland's blog. He's the retired cop who's in charge of the WPA. He posts fantastic things on his blog where he helps writers get their facts straight. Plus, he has a great sense of humor. And often fact checks tv shows, which can be a lot of fun. Southland, anyone?

Susinok | 5205 comments On cowboy hats: White reflects the heat. Black hats absorb the heat. A working hat is white. Straw for in the field or outdoor work, felt for better quality go to town etc. Black felt hats are for formal occasions, though white if often used then as well. (I am NOT kidding!)

Only wannabe cowboys wear black felt hats around in the daytime.

I was at a funeral with a bunch of country folk and the older guys were comparing their formal cowboy boots. All sorts of leathers were used and the cheapest price quoted was over $500.

Here uniformed cops wear the gun at all times when at work (even the ones sitting by the 112 phones), non-uniformed cops only wear them outside the police station, when at work, and they all log them in/out, they don't take them home with them, at least not where I worked

I should also mention that across the US, not every department works the same way. What I've heard multiple times from cops is that if you want accurate info on the NYPD because your book is set there, then you need to contact NYPD to get your facts right because their procedures won't match those of your home town. Or they use different terminology. And like everyone who has a job, cops hate it when simple things about their job are botched up, like when authors claim they know everything because they watch TV and think it's realistic.

And if you check out Lee's blog he has a great post not too far back about how to approach a cop to ask writerly questions. And the comments are helpful too. (It boils down to this: if you're nice and polite, and especially if you can figure out his rank by the symbols he's wearing and call him by his rank, he'll be more than happy to answer all of your questions.)

Becky Black (beckyblack) Anne wrote: "Idamus is in Denmark. In Norway it is as in the UK, police officers don't wear their guns unless there is a situation. The weapons are in their cars, locked away and they log the use of them. "

There are very few places you'd see a British police officer walking around with a gun. The ones guarding embassies in London have handguns, though they're usually concealed.

I recall a few years ago when alerts over terrorist attacks were even higher that police officers were walking around in high profile locations in London carrying MP5 rifles. If it was meant to make us feel safer it didn't work for me.

The time I visited the American embassy to get my ITIN (a tax number I need from the IRS so I don't pay US tax on my royalties) the British police inside the perimeter but outside the building carried automatic rifles, probably MP5s again. Scary. And I've seen police with rifles at airports.

But generally police in the UK only have guns as part of an "armed response unit" called to an incident, or if they are part of specialist units. And only on duty. Handguns are massively restricted in the UK, and just being a police officer doesn't qualify you to have one.

I always says that everything after the first episode of Sherlock never actually happened. Sherlock died from the poison pill and John made the rest up to ease his guilt at not saving him, because there is no way in hell John would have had that handgun! :D

The situation in Northern Ireland is different. People who grew up there would have been much more used to seeing police and army with guns walking about. And there are more civilian firearms too as the laws are different.

I remember the first time I saw police with rifles in the City of London, at the height of the IRA bombings. I was stopped by them at an improvised roadblock after I'd worked very late one night. It was frightening because I just wasn't used to it (and I never want to get used to it either). I was scared to reach down to press the button which opened my window in case he thought I was reaching for a weapon!!

It wasn't too unreasonable after WWII. But these days guns are so carefully controlled, and you'd get into so much trouble if you had an unlicensed weapon. Only the bad guys have guns!

Unfortunately that's not the case in the 'still' wild west of Montana.. We have many isolationists, hunters, homeowners and gun collectors here that believe in their 'god-given' right to own a gun to protect themselves and their property...
