I thought about buying the Shattered Glass audiobook but haven't yet. It was one of my earlier m/m reads and I really liked it then but I'm afraid I won't like it as much upon rereading. Hmm.

I'm trying to cut back on my audiobook buying, too. I really want to buy Tell Me It's Real but I'm holding out. ;-)

I'm currently listening to Whiskey and Wry but I'm not loving it so far. I'll give it some more time.

I'm with you, Antonella. I'm not sure I'm up for reading it again. Sorry, Ame! :) I know it's really popular, but I did not care for it. It seems several of those really popular books are just not up my alley. Oh well. :)

I read the Dirty books as they came out, and just purchased all three audiobooks at absurdly cheap prices. But Sinners are "hot mess" books for me, painful like watching good friends make bad choices. I love the characters, but everyone talks too much, and the angst and violence is way out of my comfort range. I don't think I could listen to those stories, I already race through reading the über-villain scenes.

But I keep buying them. : ?

I was underwhelmed when I read it, too, and couldn't understand all the fuss. So I should give it another go? But no way does it get to audiobook status yet!

I can't cope with the Sinners books either, because of the angst and violence (I'm judging by about half of the first one). I was disappointed because I LOVE the Cole McGinnis books. Fortunately Rhys Ford writes quickly, so I'm hoping she'll move onto something I do like! More Cole and Jae-Min?

I like the idea behind the Sinners series, and her protags, but I don't think the writing is very good. Especially the second one was very clumsy in parts, almost like a rough draft and not a finished book, and the villain was too over the top to be scary. I have downloaded the third one and will probably read it too, more or less despite.. Maybe she writes too quickly?

I am almost through listening to Dirty Laundry. The narrator is excellent.

Sinner's Gin is also a favorite series. I love Rhys Ford's mysteries!

Shattered Glass - I liked it at the time but I'm not inclined to re-read it.

That was my problem with Sinner's Gin - the writing is just not for me. But I thought I'd try Whiskey and Wry because so many people seem to love the series. I do have some other popular m/m books and series that I question just why they are so loved. But we can't all like the same things...

I think Rhys is such a promising writer. She's so much better than so much of what passes for "mystery" writing in this genre. I love so much of what she is doing -- and trying to do. She needs -- deserves -- a top notch editor.

It's very hard to explain this because if you've never had the privilege of working with a real live professionally trained mainstream editor, you don't understand how much you're going to gain from the process, but I think working with someone who really knows her stuff would take Rhys to a whole different level.

I could definitely see that. :-)

I do get frustrated when I read m/m books that I can tell (even having no writing/editing talent or experience myself) would be so much better with a good editor.

Yes to both comments. I buy all of her books, but it makes me sad when I'm reading something that could move into the "fabulous" range with mentorship and editing. It's likely seeing a disappointing film of a favorite book that you know could be improved with a few changes.

How likely is it that a mainstream editor would take on an m/m mystery? I'm just now finishing up Dirty Laundry, Book 3 of the McGinnis books. It blew me away. Again. I'd forgotten the ending.

A number of mainstream publishers are experimenting with digital first, so it's looking better all the time.

Ame | 1744 comments I am a huge fan of Rhys Ford. Or at least what I have already read by her. I have Cole McGinnis series as ebooks and Sinners Gin as audiobook... although I couldn't wait for the third book to be available in audio so I'll be having that one is both formats.

Editing problems of her don't bother me, I guess I'm enchanted enough by her style and stories not to let it bother me.

And it's good we don't all like the same stories or the same authors... it'd be pretty bland if we did ;)

Like S.E. Jakes who I know is popular. I've tried reading the Hell or High Water series but I just can't. They just don't appeal to me on any level even though so many seem to love them.

I can totally see that, though I enjoy the series. They are such over the top alpha male fantasies though. Well fantasies about alpha males, not for them.

I like the books but I have to be in the mood for over the top alpha-ness when I start one.

I downloaded my first Mary Calms book in audio format, though I have yet to get to it. It's Acrobat. I feel like I need to read at least one of her books to know what the rest of the world is getting into.

I'm currently listening to The Lion of Kent, though it's set on another planet, which I wasn't expecting. Honestly though, that's probably my fault. I didn't reread the blurb before hitting play. lol. I don't think I was in the right mood for this one yesterday. SO, we'll see how the rest goes. I have a lot of knitting to get done, so hopefully this will help. :-)

I also have the Sinner's Gin books on my audible wish list. What are the editing issues you guys are seeing? Sometimes those things can really bug me and put me out of a story, though I have yet to experience that in audio.

Two comments.

I love this line of description: "...guzzling gas like a camel on crack at a watering hole." I had to remember this one on my walk home. :-)

And that first sex scene totally made me squirm, (If you can squirm while walking.) for sexy reasons and "I'm not sure about this" reasons and "oh no!" Reasons. That had me captivated.

Mary Calmes has a new one that sounds a lot like the Dangerous Ground series, so I thought I'd give that a shot. Has anyone read it?

I found S.E. Jakes pleasantly (refreshingly?) competent for the genre. I think maybe I just need to find the right book (character dynamic) by her.

And I bought Think of England for the next month's group read.

I'm about to start reading Blade of the Samurai by Susan Spann .

Yesterday was spent listening to audio books. Paul Fleschner has completed A Vintage Affair.

He did a very good job with it.

I'd forgotten how funny that one is -- I mean, funny if you get the Southern Gothic joke (if you don't, it's probably just annoying).

I liked the two by Jakes that I read, but I haven't had time to contemplate reading another book from her yet. She has so many to choose from and I've already got so many. I'm trying to buy only the ones that are extremely important to me right now.

I wish I could clear my calendar of everything except excersise for a few months and do nothing but read all 85 ebooks that I haven't read. Then do the same for my unread print book collection!
