I agree with everything you've referenced here. To be honest, I have no place saying I can't afford anything... I know I am blessed to have decent healthcare, food, shelter, and a slowly building 401k. I take for granted my freedom of choice in how I spend my money.

Honestly, my books are my 'drug of choice'. I would much rather pay a premium price for quality work then have an e-reader full of crappy low-priced works or freebies. I do like when I see what looks like a good sale.. I went way over the top on Audible's recent one, but I'm the one that determined what I could go without later to enjoy owning a whole library full of my favorite authors to take with me on car rides, walks, and work around the house.

I need to figure out how to prioritize, and have decided that as far as GR goes, I just like to watch what you all have to say, and forget watching others, as I don't want to be brought down when I save up (or choose to use some of my 401k) for my first m/m or romance book conferences.

I selfishly need my favorite authors to be able to afford to continue to keep writing the quality work I enjoy reading..

Idamus OK, I gotta ask, what is a 401k?

Mtsnow13 | 1115 comments Idamus wrote: "OK, I gotta ask, what is a 401k?"

A retirement fund. In my case, my employer matches a portion of my investment each paycheck.

"A 401(k) is a retirement savings plan sponsored by an employer. It lets workers save and invest a piece of their paycheck before taxes are taken out. Taxes aren’t paid until the money is withdrawn from the account."

My employer invests my pre-tax money in the market, and I earn the interest(and can lose it depending on the market).

Ah, we have something like that too, although, our government is greedier, we pay taxes twice

It's been a ranty type of a week, if not one to drive you into a complete fury.

I think I'll go adopt another dog this weekend and stay way from Facebook. And read. :) And hang here.

Go float in the pool, Josh. Deep breaths. If I had one, I'd be doing the same thing. I'ma go hug my fluffy cat when I get home.

Yes, I wholeheartedley agree. It seems that a part of society takes its turn back to kindergarten: I want it, I want it for free, and I want it now... It is not important that somebody else has literally to pay for people with that attiude, mainly if they got their imagined "rights".

It's sad that you can see this even in small things: I prepared the gifts and the cards for our teachers today, tomorrow being the last school day here, and I know that only a third of the parents will pay their share, but all of them will nod very benevolently when the teachers thank the parents for the small presents :-( It is just the same every year.

And I thought about the last book I read, of the ton of research the author obviously did, the inventing of the story, the writing and re-writing, until I as the reader got a really wonderful book. I paid 2,34 € for it and I felt ashamed - that is less than the cheapest and smallest coffee at Starbuck's!!! How is an author going to live on this?

LOL I already have one dog. She's alone outside while we are at work (or inside if the weather is too extreme). I want a buddy for her. One of my cats really likes her but it's just not the same.

Here's my current mutt, Remy.

Becky Black (beckyblack) I'm listening to the audio of Jordan L. Hawk's Stormhaven. I don't know if Whyborne is loosening up a bit, but he's definitely funnier in this third book. Or maybe it's the narrator bringing that out.

I do find that seems to happen. I often find the audiobook brings out humour more than when I'm just reading it. Adrien's humour comes out more strongly in the Adrien English audiobooks, I find.

Depending on whether you get the right narrator.

I think both Chris and Kevin have excellent comedic timing and delivery.

I've actually found that too. I tend to laugh more on my way home with an audio book. And I notice I screw up my face all funny during certain scenes too. Lol. I did that a lot in A Reason To Believe, and that was a very serious story, but I found so much to laugh at or smile at.

I always assumed that it was on your time zone, wherever you are, but in a relative sense. It says "posted 0 minutes ago" when something is brand new. Your post is shown as 1 hour, 13 mins ago.

That's what I thought, too, but now the dates are all a day behind, so they must have a home time zone somewhere. The "minutes ago" stuff is still the same, but I'm now a day ahead of everything else. Like I added a book this morning and it's says July 10, when it is July 11 where I am. Or maybe I've fallen into a roving time warp.

Date line fun--I flew back to the States from NZ several years ago the day after my birthday, and got to have my birthday again on the plane, which was kind of fun. Not that trans-Pacific flights are all that fun, really.

Ame | 1744 comments I've been listening to Nick Nowack. Fab series with a serious undertone, I just finished the third one. I'm trying to control myself in the book buying even if it's hard. Book buying is really my worst addiction, the one I have no control over ;)

So now I'm relistening to Shattered Glass.

It's funny. I'd heard so much about this book and so many loved it but I read it the first time I didn't like it that much. It took me a long time to get into it but then it was fine. However after I'd finished I kept thinking about it until I read it again and then I loved it! Reread it again and then bought it the audio and loved it even more. It's one of my favorite books.

LOL! After hearing so much about it, I read it and I really didn't like it. You mean, if I read it three times I'll love it? ;-)
