I will have to check if the songs are available with Amazon Prime :) I am hopeless when it comes to setting up playlists. I usually just listen to the radio so I don't have to make any decisions.

I follow some of the top playlists on Spotify - Top Indie, Top alternative, etc. and the Viral 50 playlist usually has a good variety. I will have to check out the Amazon prime playlists. I just don't think they have nearly the catalog as Spotify or Beats but it's free with Prime so...

I have fallen in love with the new album "Stay Gold" by the Swedish duo First Aid Kit.

If anyone is familiar with them feel free to recommend some other artists I might like. :)

But in reality I'm more sitting on the couch hearing the audiobook. The next time, I hear a audiobook afterwards as reward and do the chores with Metallica!

I actually like doing chores while listening to Frankie Valley and the Four Seasons. For some reason that kind of older, jumpy dance music gets me going and in a cleaning mood. Strange, I know. :-)

But I do like washing dishes while listening to an audio book.

I would never have pictured you listening to Frankie! The first one which comes to mind is "December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night)".

HJ, I blame fanfiction! One of the characters on CSI was really into the history of Las Vegas in the cutest fashion. He'd get all excited about a case when they uncovered an ancient mob hit or something. So one of my fav fanfic writers was doing this epic slash fic with this character and he'd been arguing with his boyfriend who wanted to make it up to him and threw him the biggest bash ever. He hired 50 gay guys to dress in period style and basically do nothing but eat, drink, dance, and hang out, got a room at a casino dressed to look like a period lounge, and sent a period costume and limo to pick up Greg. Did I mention he also got a Frankie impersonation band for the night too?

Greg had been singing some of Frankie's songs before that night, but still, Nick came out on stage singing Who Loves You, Baby? And the last song played was Oh What A Night. (My two faves!) Later, Nick apologized for not remembering to keep the music to 1965. Like it mattered. Best romantic scene, ever!

Plus, I grew up listening to 50's and 60's music in my Dad's car. So, yeah, I do like older music.

Right now though, I'm listening to Lindsey Sterling, the KA soundtrack, and the Firefly parody CD called On The Drift by the Bedlam Bards. Also good for cleaning! :-)

You lost me there, Jordan! I like your story about how you got into Frankie Valley. I've read some of the CSI fanfic, a couple of years ago, but not that one.

It's funny how the music you hear when you're little stays with you. My nieces clearly remember my playing Elvis Costello in the car when they were little, and Hanson's Mmmbop, and a few others. One of them wants to go on a day trip this summer, driving around listening to music and singing along! We plug in her iPod and listen to a few tracks, and then swap in my iPod. It'll be fun.

Definitely. I have many clear memories that go along with certain songs from my childhood.

I also remember making mixed tapes from the radio. My DD has no idea how easy she has it now. :D

When I used to drive, the only way I could keep myself alert and paying attention was to play jumpy pop music I could sing to. Otherwise I'd get drowsy.

Hanson, I'll never forget them. I think they're on a mixed tape somewhere. I have a million of them, it seems. Last November I went through all the ones I have left and using an app, I got correct song titles and artists for most of them. Someday I'll get CDs or songs digitally. I love the music I grew up with in the 80's and 90's and even some 70's stuff got onto a tape very early on. But my tapes are getting old and aren't working well. Time to upgrade!

I'll have to find the link to that story. I copied it into a document and saved it to my computer so I can read it whenever I want. Though, since it's somewhere near 500 pages, I have yet to print it out. Lol.

In recent years my Mom hasn't wanted music on long car trips because she wants quiet while she reads or whatever. My Dad told me as he gets older, driving 7-8 hours is draining with no music or distractions. So I went ahead and bought him an MP3 player for Christmas about two years ago, prefilled with a few albums I had that I knew he'd like. He was like a little kid getting his first bike, or a puppy. I've never seen him like that before. It was a starting point for both of them. Slowly my Mom is allowing music and letting herself enjoy it. Now she's got satellite radio in her new car and last I knew they were switching between the 40's, 50's, & 60's stations on a long trip.

My Mom kept telling me my Dad wasn't into music whenever I'd suggest getting him a CD for Xmas, but I always remembered the music in the car.

I'm so glad things are improving!

I find it difficult to drive any distance without either music or an audiobook, although I turn off the sound system when I'm navigating somewhere new (love satnav!). I think the MP3 player was a brilliant idea for your Dad!

Mixed tapes used to be areal labour of love, as presents. I suppose now the labour is in choosing the tracks and putting them into the best order.

Making a tape used to be essential, too, if you wanted to hear a particular song without listening to everything else on the radio, hoping they'd play it. The best chance of getting the song you wanted was during the top 20 show, but then you didn't know when your song(s) would be played as it was the chart reveal. I remember the excitement of discovering what was number one, too.

Yes, and it was always the songs hard to find they talked through, never the ones you had recorded a dozend times already... :-)

I remember that the boys recorded special mixed tapes for the girls, a kind of dating via music preferences. It was very lowering to get a tape full of the most awful schlager-singing, the obvious proof that you were not very popular with the boys!

Jordan Lombard (jslombard) | 15348 comments Mod
I actually liked my DJ. Still do, actually. So whenever he talked through a song, it was just a special edition of that song, depending on what he said. I've got a copy of him replying to the lyrics of Bad Boys, the COPS tv show theme, and it's kinda funny. "I'm runnin' man! I'm outa here!" Lol.

When I visit my patents next week I've got to find out what new station he's moved to.

HJ | 3603 comments I've just started listening to Jake G. reading The Great Gatsby. Thank you to whoever recommended it; I love the way he reads it. I don't know his voice because I don't think I've ever seen him in anything (although I have heard all abut him for a while).

I keep seeing Mia Farrow when he reads descriptions of how Daisy looks, speaks, and moves. So far it seems to have been excellent casting for that film! And for me Gatsby will always be Robert Redford (although I've only just got to him looking at the stars, i.e. the end of chapter 1).

I guess Antonella wouldn't mind me saying on behalf of all the Brokies in this group, I can assure you that Mr Jake G is a wonderful actor, as well as his voice (he's involved in a few book/poem reading events, as I recalled, he has also narrated in a documentary about man walking on a wire...)

I read the short story after seeing the movie and it was beautifully written, in that it captures the feel of the story so well.

Usually the printed word is better than the movie, but here, I thought they were pretty much equal.

I didn't know it was in audio format. I might have to check that out. :-)
