I have been to South America (Brazil and Peru) on two different occasions and neither of these countries were sad places. Social and political challenges in abundance, but lovely, smiling and friendly people, proud of their cultural heritage. A good place for writers I would think, with lot of interesting topics to research and discuss :)

He explains hat research is not necessary. He writes in his garden and when he needs inspiration he looks into a rose. And then he types. That's the process.

Maybe we should emulate his style... I am sure it'll do great with my graduate advisor. I can just imagine myself telling Dr. A... "But Steve Martin said I didn't need to do any research, I just need to look at a rose and write in my garden... so I just ad libbed and didn't read any refutal of Maimonidean philosophy in 14th century Castille..."

Yeah, and I'm sure it was the same(ish) in Czechoslovakia, 21+ years ago when it still existed, but in 98 that place was called Czech Republic and Slovakia

message 1959: by Feral (new)

Feral | 237 comments Idamus re: "Czechoslovakia"

It's one of those things that people sometimes still use (though not so much now). I've found the my Bohemian relatives (whose parents came from places like Bratislava or Prague and were kind of on the middle ground in terms Czech or Slovak) were actually pretty bad about not saying the old country name even though they knew full well it had split. There were "Czechoslovakian-American" organizations and churches and so forth who were not about to change their names.

I don't think Steve Martin cared. Maybe he did it on purpose. He used to play a "Wild and Crazy guy" named Yortuk Festrunk Brothers on Saturday Night Live and I got the feeling he was parodying people he was familiar with in that role.

I'm still amused my library has this on audio. I'm old, let me have my old humor. :P

Becky Black (beckyblack) Oh glory be, I've just discovered the "Stats" section on the Audible app. There are badges! There are "levels" to achieve! This was made for me! Yes, I'm a little tiny bit competitive, even with myself! That's it, all my listening will be in the app now. I want my badges and to get the higher levels. :D

I've apparently listened to books in the app for 10 days and nearly 10 hours. 250 hours! If only I'd always listened on my app and not on the Audible Manager on my laptop, lord knows how many hours it would be.

About 10 are freebies though, and 6 or 8 are buy two books for one credits

I should not have checked that -- I own 104 and have more than 10 in my library I haven't listened to yet.

I do have a nice collection of badges, though. ;)

Mtsnow13 | 1115 comments Wow! I just counted 117 on my iPad! And I've only been a member for like just over a year? It's addictive. First got into them at the library, but got even more attached since I've started finding some decent M/M books on Audible.

I notice DSP seems to be cranking them out like crazy, but I'm being selective on those.

And strangely enough, don't see badges anymore since I moved away from my iPod. Hmmm...

And counting my audible books there are only 17. But I have 13 on cassette and CD.

Anyway, just finished A Reason To Believe by Diana Copeland and I can't speak highly enough about this audio book. I loved it. The story was great and the narration was super awesome.

I will definitely recommend this to those who enjoy a good mystery along with a fantastic love story. And who in this group wouldn't want that? Lol.

Becky Black (beckyblack) I've been listening on the radio to some short dramatisations of some of the Raffles stories. They made me go look up what the Internet thinks of Raffles and Bunny's relationship. Since the first suggestion Google gave when I typed in "Raffles Bunny" was "Raffle Bunny gay" I think that's pretty clear without even reading the results.

You don't exactly need your slash detector on high gain with these guys.

It's not just me then!

I have a soft spot for these early twentieth century "Boy's Own" type of stories. There are some Bulldog Drummond stories by Sapper, in which they race around Europe in huge powerful cars rescuing pure fair maidens and making sure right is done, which are excellent. They remind me a little of the earlier books by John Buchan such as The Thirty-Nine Steps and Greenmantle, but they're not as good.

ETA I should warn that they're very much of their time, and reveal attitudes towards non-Englishmen which we deplore today (quite rightly).

message 1986: by HJ (new)

HJ | 3603 comments I've just remembered my favourite early twentieth century adventure books involving fast cars etc.: the early Saint books by Leslie Charteris. But only the early books.

And, of course, Biggles by W.E. Johns, although he flew planes. Again, the early books are best. And again, to quote Becky, "You don't exactly need your slash detector on high gain with these guys".

This book gave me nightmares when I read it (an awfully long time ago) so I've never read another by Patricia Highsmith. It taught me not to read outside my comfort zone (which is very narrow when it comes to violence and cruelty) no matter how good the writing.

I remember that the movie had good reviews, but I'm not sure if that was from people who had read the book! I do think that it's a completely different experience, watching a movie when you know the book.
