It took me a while to get into Widdershins but once I got used to the narrator it was good.

Thanks for the Greenwode recommendation. I might look into that one.

I read but did not listen to Better Than Good. It was okay. I also read but did not care for Aaron. I just didn't really like the writing style and didn't care much for the story. But it seems a lot of other people like that one. :-)

I'm in Virginia, and there really is no ONE Virginia accent. It varies so much depending on which part of the state you're in, and some people just have thicker accents... I have relatives in southern VA and NC that sound very different from me. I have a cousin who moved to Mississippi and her accent has definitely changed since she moved there.

I've always known since I first looked into the books. Isn't it mentioned in the blurb? I know the author is a lawyer too, which was what got him into writing the series.

If I'd known these were in audio, I likely would have picked up the audio books rather than the old print copies that are all wonky. lol. Or I should have just gotten the ebooks.

Some of these look really good!

I read The Affair of the Porcelain Dog and it was pretty good. Didn't know there was an audio for it.

Greenwode sounds really good. Will definitely have to look into that one.

Yikes. This is why it's imperative to listen carefully to those files -- and to hire experienced narrators in the first place.

I've been hearing horror stories from other authors about narrators refusing to correct their errors, narrators bringing stuff in late, horrible sound quality that the author imagined would be fixed in the final (I'm not sure why you would think that -- I always assume the sound quality I hear is what I'd get, unless otherwise discussed).

That said, I've taken chances on inexperienced narrators, and so far it's worked out. I mean, that's not to say everyone has loved every narration, but there have been no technical issues.

Audio m/m is mirroring the glut in ebooks. You've had a bunch of people rush to put out an inferior product, and the result is inevitable.

message 1808: by LJ (last edited Mar 31, 2014 08:42AM) (new)

LJ (ljwinn) | 18 comments I think my next listen will be The Affair of the Porcelain Dog. I hope her publisher decides to do an audiobook for Turnbull House. And then Purgatory. Still wavering on Widdershins... I'm almost persuaded to give it a try.

I also thought the Little Death was good, well-narrated. I've got the second one too, Goldenboy, but haven't listened to it yet.

Has anyone given Cecilia Tan's Daron's Guitar Chronicles: Volume One a try? The three volumes have been on my wishlist forever. The narration sounds well done. I have her The Prince's Boy: Volume One and The Prince's Boy: Volume Two but haven't listened to them yet. Need to listen more and buy less!

Be warned: Greenwode ends with a cliffhanger... The author knows her legend and history; I really enjoyed her reworking of Robin Hood and Guy of Gisbourne, and sure wish there were more fantasy M/M books out there of this quality. There are some small technical issues with the audio which aren't overly intrusive (the narrator saying 'On Track' before starting his narration) - surprising this wasn't fixed though since the overall production is very good.

I am puzzled by the subpar production choices for many of the M/M releases. The word 'dire' comes to mind. I also find that many of the M/M audiobooks highlight the poor quality of the writing - it can be painful to hear.

Thanks Valerie C for your opinions on Widdershins, Better than Good and Aaron.

Listening to the 5 minutes of audio for The Little Death sample. So far, I'm liking it. The narrator is very straightforward in his reading, a lot like you'd expect in a noir or something similar. And, since this is a mystery novel, it seems to fit the story.

Don't know if I'll get this in audio, but I'm tempted.

I have yet to experience this, so I'm still wanting everything I can get. Probably because it's harder to search for MM in audio. You can't just type in MM Romance. And it's hard to know what books are in audio and which aren't unless you've done searches for every book you're interested in.

I guess it's obvious I haven't listened to much MM aside from Josh's superb work, since I have yet to experience wierdness in my audio books.

Since they're more expensive than an ebook, it would be annoying to have a bad production.

Then you just return it, the first two, you can do on your own, after that you need to contact them and ask for a refund

Let us know what you think of James Lear's The Hardest Thing: A Dan Stagg Mystery. I think these are the gay James Bond parodies? It's been awhile since I read (not listened to) The Druid Stone and Outcast Mine, but I did like both of these. Any writing issues were outweighed by the stories. I also follow the Widdershins series. I think you need to be amused by a skewed version of Indian Jones-ish stories, but with a milder-mannered protagonist, meaning slightly tongue-in-cheek historical action-adventure with paranormal elements thrown in. Maybe I'm just easily amused. ; ) I had a harder time listening to Widdershins, but the narrator's voice finally grew on me.

LJ (ljwinn) | 18 comments I think his Mitch Mitchell series is the James Bondy one. But I'll let you know how the The Hardest Thing goes, the narrator Charles Carr is brill so I have high hopes and James Lear can write adventurous dirty fun well.

Valerie (valerie_c) | 1519 comments I've noticed Dreamspinner seems to be putting out a lot of audio books lately, which is great, but I wish they would do a better job picking narrators. Some of the samples I've listened to recently are just BAD.

I thought about getting the audio books for the Mitch Mitchell series a while ago. Listening to the sample I liked the narrators voice a lot but he's just... reading. Not doing voice, not performing... hm, not enough. ;-)

I read The Hardest Thing and thought it was very good, kind of road trip but a journey into the MC's emotions as well. Not so light hearted as Mitch but very good. (and not to forget the genorous dose of sex he puts in his books...^^)

Becky Black (beckyblack) I gave the Widdershins audio another go and I'm getting used to the narrator. The audio quality isn't as high as some I've heard, there are bits that are kind of echoey. But I'm getting caught up in the story, so not noticing that so much.

message 1822: by LJ (new)

LJ (ljwinn) | 18 comments I think I'll read rather than listen to Widdershins.

I'm half way through Jess Faraday's The Affair of the Porcelain Dog. Very good production, narration and writing. I'm enjoying the story, it's not a romance but rather an involving historical mystery with a gay protagonist (former rentboy Ira). And, for those who care, any sex scenes are fade to black.

Also, FYI Amy Lane's Chase in Shadow has just been released with Sean Crisden narrating. I'm not a particular fan of Sean Crisden but many people seem to like him. I would have preferred someone like Robert Nieman who did Amy Lane's Clear Water and Kate Sherwood's Shying Away.

message 1823: by Anne (new)

Anne | 6816 comments I have started to listen to A Dangerous Thing while knitting mittens. The pattern is rather complicated and then I get so involved in the story I keep doing mistakes. So, if this mitten becomes a disaster, I know who to blame ;).

But seriously, it is a couple of years since I read the story, so I have forgotten how good it is. And the narration makes be aware of small details I might have overlooked the first time, little details and descriptions and phrases that makes the story and the surroundings come alive for me.

That's exactly how I felt listening to this the first time. I'd read the book a few years before so I'd forgotten a few things. This is one of my favorites from the series, and I've listened to it several times now.

So I've been listening to these two groups/artists who are mostly on YouTube, but also have CDs out. Their music is amazing and their videos are fantastic too.

This is only one from The Piano Guys, but they do so many amazing songs and videos with a cello and piano:

And here's one of Lindsey Stirling's latest. She does dubstep violin music:

I'm glad you're enjoying it!

Another new release is Dani Alexander's Shattered Glass, the sample didn't sell me on the narration. Curious what other people think?

I'm listening to a non M/M book right now, William Landay's Defending Jacob narrated by Grover Gardner. Compulsive listening!

Dark Edge of Honor (eeks, I'm dying to stick a u in the Honor) is on my TBL to pile, would love to know Mtsnow13 if you think I should move it up?

Becky Black (beckyblack) Ooh, spotted what I think will be my next one from Audible. A book I read a few years ago and just love. A Case of Exploding Mangoes

It's narrated by Paul Bhattacharjee, who sadly committed suicide last year after being declared bankrupt. I only needed about 30 seconds of the sample before adding it to the wish list. Great voice.

I'm glad to know you liked it, Aleks. I'll be getting both for my trip to the UK Meet.

That's funny you say that about sex scenes. Josh has said the exact same thing several times, but I honestly like his scenes in audio... Unless there are other people around me. Then I start to laugh at what they can't hear through my headphones, wondering what they would think if they knew. Lol. And it's usually strangers on the street.

Ame | 1744 comments I just finished listening to Cop out by K. C. Burn..... it was just excellent.... I kind of have to sit on my hands so I won't binge read the rest of the series. I really liked the plot and the slow development of the main characters feelings. It made it more realistic that these things take time..... for a straight guy to fall for another one. It isn't instalove and easy solutions. Really liked this one.... I was kind of a zombie because I kept trying to find things to do that allowed me to put in my earplugs and listen and then no one managed to get any contact to me;)

Hope the rest of the series is as good.

Now I'm starting Love, like water by Rowan Speedwell. I hope it's good. And then I'm pondering if I should buy Shattering glass by Dani Alexander..... I really want to but still...... buying audio books for books a already have as ebooks seems like a waste of money..... yet I keep on doing it.
