Cynthia | 178 comments I recently found this beautiful violin duet of Ashokan Farewell on You Tube. It's the only modern song (written in the early 1980s) included on the soundtrack for Ken Burns' Civil War series that first aired on PBS in the U.S. It's written in the theme of a Scottish lament and could easily be mistaken for a tune actually written in the 1860s. The song is played during the intro of the series and often in the background as the series continues, including a reading of a letter written by a Northern soldier, Sullivan Ballou, to his wife, Sarah. The letter is so beautiful...I've included a link to an excerpt from the letter below. It's well worth the read if you have a moment.

It's one of those tunes that makes me cry each time I listen to it...so mournful, but so beautiful.

Now that's a couple artists I haven't listened to in a long time. :)

I saw the series when it first broadcast in 1990, and hearing that gorgeous piece of music at the start of each episode was heartbreaking and thrilling. One of the most beautiful melodies ever.

Thanks for sharing. That's a lovely version of that song. I've mostly heard Mark O'Connor play bluegrass and country music. He is quite talented.

I saw the Civil War when it came out too. My Dad taped it for us. Fantastic work, is all I can say. Thanks for the link!

One of Celine Dion's earlier albums was the first CD I ever bought myself when I was just starting out to be able to afford my own music. But I haven't bought any of her music since for some reason. Found this one used, and am now wondering what I've been missing! Love Me Back To Life is my favorite from her current album.

As for John Denver, I "borrowed" a cassette from my Mom a long time ago and never gave it back. Lol. When she was putting a duplicate record in a yard sale awhile back I jumped on it. But now I finally own a two disc set for my CD player with songs I've loved but never owned. I also barely remember seeing him in concert when I was very little, which was where the cassette came from. Yeah, I turned out to be a big fan. :-) his music is great to sing along to! But gosh he did like to sing about getting high a lot, didn't he? I didn't realize until listening to the CDs today for the first time.

Just listened to the violin duet. Boy, does that bring back memories! So beautiful, the way they do it!

I've also been listening to Lorena McKennitt's The Mask and The Mirror album, which was one of the first CDs I got with my first CD player for Xmas. Lol. There's a lot of firsts with music happening today. This is my favorite of all her albums.

I'll post links tomorrow when I'm at a proper computer. Squee! And tomorrow if I'm good about getting up and out, I'll see about getting both computers fixed!

Valerie (valerie_c) | 1519 comments Ha! I "borrowed" cassettes and CDs from my brother when I was little. He wasn't generous enough to let me legitimately borrow them so I had to be sneaky. :P

I cringe at some of the music my daughter listens to but then I think about some of albums I had when I was a kid - for example Purple Rain by Prince. Not so innocent, LOL.

message 1658: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Lombard (jslombard) | 15348 comments Mod
Purple Rain! I have that on record! Most of Prince, I can't stand. But I love that album and the mysterious song All Seven.

Btw, just had an interesting conversation with my Dad about the song Ashokan Farewell. Since Ashokan isn't far from where I grew up. Apparently every year they have a dance camp and at the end of the camp everyone gets together to say farewell, and that's where the song comes from. Rather simple, but not something people probably think about.

message 1659: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia | 178 comments @Jordan, interesting about Ashokan Farewell, isn't it? I find it so interesting that there's a camp at Ashokan where people go to learn traditional music and dance for the summer. I read that Jay Ungar, the writer, was moved to tears as he was writing the song. He was so sad at the end of the summer and missing that sense of community and friendship. I think the song really captures those feelings, but it's still hard for me to imagine that the song was written in the modern era...not before or during the Civil War.

message 1660: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Lombard (jslombard) | 15348 comments Mod
Agreed! It really does seem like a much older song!

As for John Denver, I'm not sure which is my favorite, but Rocky Mountain High is pretty high up there on the list:

I didn't know there were either. My Dad sent me both links this morning. It's such an interesting story.

I still find it kinda sad that they flooded the entire town, or most of it anyway, to make the reservoir for NYC. Just thinking about all of those buildings under water. I don't think they knocked anything down before they flooded it.

I did the same thing when I had a long commute. When I got home I was refreshed and ready to go again if I had to. When I worked close to home, I had to go sit a while and recharge.

The drive I have now is only 15 minutes, but it's in the country so it's pretty and relaxing, but not enough time some days.

Wow! That's fantastic. You'll have to let us know which ones you like!

I've only got two new ones left, so I'll need to find some more before my trip in June.

Otherwise, I just acquired two more Harry Potters on cassette, and a few random books on CD. Plus the one I've borrowed from the library.

So far Daughter of Smoke & Bone is fantastic. I really like the narrator's voice. The book is set in Prague. I don't know anything about accents there, but I do like the accents she does for the other characters. The MC female speaks with an American accent, which is explained in the story as to why so it's believable and understandable. lol.

I really like the audios of Michael Connelly's Mickey Haller books, currently listening to the last book, which was in the birthday batch
Courtroom/crime books

(Sadly, I need to stop now, with only 1 hour left, but I need to finish reading The Road for school tomorrow, and it's a pain in the butt to read, no ,.'" ", well, almost, the are some commas and an occational period.)
