I bought The Lincoln Lawyer by Michael Connolly, Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier, both books I've read and liked, and then a new to me author John Ringo Ghost: Paladin of Shadows

I saved over $70 on that

Mtsnow13 | 1115 comments I bought the Daughter of the Forest book, as well... The narrator's voice is wonderful for this story! And The Beekeeper's Apprentice Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes looked good:) Considering Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West and a couple others ;)

I think Bob Mayer wrote some books with Jennifer Crusie, if you like her. I've listened to some of her books on audio and really enjoyed them, e.g. Welcome To Temptation and its sequel, and Getting Rid of Bradley and especially Charlie All Night.

I should have added that they're m/f romances, and amusing/funny.

Denise (deniserj) | 10 comments I know a lot of you have already bought audios from the sale but for future reference just in case any of you did not know. Check with your local libraries first because 9 times out of 10 you can get them there for free especially mainstream big name writers. I am a member of audible but I never buy unless the libraries I'm members with does not have them. It can save you a lot of money.

Sadly no libraries, or bookstores have m/m here, and only a very little bit of sci-fi
But I buy because I want to keep the stuff, not just do one listen/read through :D

I understand but I go through a minimum of five audio books a week, listening while I work. I could never afford that but you can just take them out and listen as much as you want. I download into itunes and then transfer to my ipod, I don't keep them in itunes but you don't have to take them off. If I want to listen again I'll just borrow and download again. Almost all of my m/m are from audible but I've found a few at my library.

This is a good tip, especially if you listen to as many audiobooks as Denise. My library has lots of audiobooks on CD (many more than when I used to commute and needed them badly, in the days before the Audible alternative) but it does charge for them (it's still much cheaper than buying them).

It also has some available to download, although having just looked through them I already have the very few which I would have wanted to listen to (only about 10). And I didn't see any m/m. It has 50 romance titles, but not ones I like, and 20 historical novels, ditto. I'm sure the last time I looked they were some weird automated read aloud but now they are the actual narrated versions.

message 1515: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (valerie_c) | 1519 comments I just renewed my library card yesterday so I could borrow The Unsung Hero audiobook from the library. I've been meaning to start that series for a while now.

My small local library has a decent selection of audiobooks through a consortium that uses Overdrive. No m/m though. I used to pay a small out of state annual fee -- I think it was $25 or $35 - for access to the Free Library of Philadelphia online collection (e-books and audiobooks), but I stopped once I started reading mostly m/m since they didn't have many.

Lol. That's what I've been doing before I 'waste' money. I check my library first. They have a pretty good selection, but the ones I decided to purchase, they did not have. And I still need to figure out how to get them to purchase any m/m stories...best possibilities is to start with YA fantasy, with gay protagonists, so far....

message 1517: by Idamus (new)

Idamus I checked the closest library, they apparently still use tapes, TAPES? How very 80es O.O

message 1518: by Mtsnow13 (last edited Feb 12, 2014 11:02AM) (new)

Mtsnow13 | 1115 comments All you Gay romance and nonfiction fans, just figured out the following search brings up 488 books on Amazon that are 'Whispersync' capable, meaning you get a heck of an Audible discount if you purchase the Kindle edition first, and don't gave to waste your precious credits (saving them for those first run books we REALLY want to get)..don't know if this is international, as I checked US site only...apologies if not :(

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_pg_1?r...

Nice because you can see the ratings, as well.

message 1519: by Ame (new)

Ame | 1744 comments Somewhere earlier in this thread someone was talking about other way to be an audible member, besides the credits. Because I want to be a member but the books I want cost less than what I pay monthly for the credits and I'm just to cheap to throw away money so I end up paying both books and credits.

So does anyone remember this?

Because I want to buy Stranger things have happened plus there are those leather boots I just HAVE TO buy.... so I have to find a wsy to save money ;)

Send them a mail to say you want the audiblelistener light, it's $9.95 for a year, you don't get any credits, and I think you get 20% off, but I'm not sure about that
There's a send us an email on the bottom of this page

http://audible.custhelp.com/app/answe...

message 1521: by Mtsnow13 (new)

Mtsnow13 | 1115 comments Yep. That's what I do...why I love doing the Whispersync, as I get some cool m/m books, AND only pay $9.95 per year (they made me call in, didn't know about the email option) then I can save my big bucks I am NOT spending on monthly credits on the new releases, like Kick Start or Rhys's books for example :)

message 1522: by Mtsnow13 (new)

Mtsnow13 | 1115 comments Also, FYI..you keep your credits when you transfer over..so make sure you save them for the costlier books, as the cart will try to default to use them. AND you get to take advantage of their promos..like the 40% off at Christmas...

message 1523: by Susinok (last edited Feb 12, 2014 03:52PM) (new)

Susinok | 5205 comments I always have more costly books I can buy with my credits if my m/m are less expensive. :) This month I even bought 3 extra credits. The books I wanted were $22 at the member discount price, so I saved bigtime.

The key is to know the price of each credit you have (around 11.35 US) and shop/buy accordingly.

One way to get MM in your library is to send them and email, if they have one for public use. If you can talk to the person in charge of Collection Development, that works too. Give them a list of authors you'd like to see and in what formats. If you get an awesome person who wants to add MM but doesn't know where to start, they may even let you suggest more titles in the future. But this all depends on how small your library is.

My library is huge. We have a large central library and over 20 smaller branches, so we don't work that way. On our online catalog there is a "suggest a purchase" button that gives you a little form to fill out with the item's information along with your library card information. The library will determine whether or not to purchase the item based on many factors but one of them is whether or not they think the item will be popular. If they buy it, the item automatically gets put on hold for you when it comes in.

The thing that sucks is that if they don't order your item, they don't tell you. There is no communication about it at all for patrons. Unless you specifically know the person doing the book ordering.

I'm just grateful that the person who chooses our romance books also likes MM and will try to include those when she can, but I think they get put in a special cart and therefore aren't ordered as frequently as I'd like.

My goodness. I had to buy an tape player on eBay just so I could listen to some old audiobooks I also bought on eBay, of books I love which weren't on Audible. I haven't had a tape player in a car for some years. Your library is more than one generation behind - CDs are considered old-fashioned by some now!

Next thing is they'll be saying "there's no demand for audiobooks" and they won't even hold the tapes...

Jordan Lombard (jslombard) | 15348 comments Mod
My library only recently got rid of our VHS tapes, but a lot of Children's librarians kept some because they're still used, at least to show the kids as library programming. And we still take them as donations too. Usually they're sold at the library book sale. They don't get put into our circulating collections.

I loved tapes! I was still actively listening to tapes until the early 2000s. I find it quite funny that my car, a 2004 model, has a tape player in it. It's great because I've been listening to all my old tapes once more in the car before I send them off to a new home. Oh the nostalgia! Listening to music I loved in 1995 is a hoot! And yes, I'm still a fan of CDs. However, I do now listen to my Ipod in the car. Pretty good, eh? :D
No one would ever mistake me for someone that is up with the times. :)

Ha. I still love my CDs. Just ordered three new ones, in fact. And I still have all of my old cassettes too. I don't break away from old tech easily. I've got all the old VHS tapes too, and still watch them on occasion. But, I'm strange like that. lol. And I find it's easier to set up my TV to tape things via VHS than to attempt anything on a newer TV, so as long as my TV/VCR combo continues to work, I'll continue to use it. Besides, much as I really want a larger screen, I don't have room for it between my bookcases!

I agree with you! I also find it easy to rewind a little and replay e.g. a sentence I didn't quite hear on videotape rather than on DVD. I was merely surprised that there was a library which was persisting in lending cassette tapes, because one reason I've been able to buy many of my favourites was because the libraries have sold their cassette books.
