What we're listening to

I have to get my hands on that one! I love the movies and have never read the books.

This is the one I got from Audible.

There are several others, mostly full cast audio adaptations, if you prefer those. But this one is a normal audiobook, just the narrator. And he does the voices really well.

I've got The Maltese Falcon, The Glass Key and Red Harvest, and I've read the..."
I'm reading a bunch of noir and detective stories just now - for reasons. :D For some reason The Thin Man isn't on Kindle, and I was looking for a paperback and then thought - let's just check Audible...
Oooh, thanks for the rec on The Thin Man. I just added that to my wish list. I'm more likely to listen to the audio at this point than find the time to read it what with all the other books I'm piling onto my coffee table!

I really enjoyed the book, but I had a hard time separating it from the movie, and I think they're quite different in feel. I might suggest trying not to think about the film when you read the book, if that's even possible. I absolutely adore the movie and I found it really influenced my reading of the book.

Fortunately I can't really remember the film, so should be able to keep the separation. Thank you for reminding me about good old D Hammett - I think he'll work really well in audio and look forward to getting some and listening to them.

I've loved this series for close to 30 years :D

How are you liking it - how is the narrator? I love this series too (and always felt the protagonist's struggle is - and possibly is intended to be - an analogue of the conflicts of a devout Catholic gay person, but that's another matter!), but there are no Audible reviews, and I'd only want to listen if I could feel confident the narration does justice to it...

He's doing a good job, he's not doing a lot of voices, but you can still clearly hear when a new person talks
Maybe try the sample?
Oh, and for some odd reason only books 1 and 3 are available as a whispersync deal

Thanks, maybe I'll do that (try the sample I mean).
And though I have no personal experience of it, apparently having only 2 out of 3 of a series available as Whispersync is typical for Amazon - there's a discussion of that very phenomenon going on in the Audible/Audiobook GR group.

That doesn't surprise me, Amazon is weird, I got the ebooks, the cheap audios was a nice bonus, I'll get the 3rd if it goes into the deal and not if it doesn't
I don't recall seeing the film for The Thin Man, so that shouldn't be a problem.
I LOVED Judith Tarr's His Majesty's Elephant, enough to get it special ordered when I was in college. But I never got to read any of her other works, so I should check these out!

I've read this and the Alamut series, I prefer this one, even though it's the same 'verse, just different MCs
I'm listening to the Audible version of John Tristan's The Adorned, while I read along. I'd started the book last summer and for some reason(s) set it aside, distracted by other reading I suppose. Also, this is a longer book, and I'm not so much in the mood for that these days.
I bought the audiobook last October. It was a Whispersync deal. I have the impression that these are something of a financial wash/loss to authors, while a great deal for readers. So I can't blame authors if they are able to opt out and choose to do so. I've never used the Whispersync feature; my purchase was prompted by the discount. I will say that the voice of this particular narrator appeals to me a lot, and in light of that I'm enjoying the book more (it is beautiful writing) and likely to purchase more of Tristan's work. So maybe Whispersync can be beneficial to writers, although not necessarily in the way that was intended. : )
One caveat, for some reason there is a different narrator — or the same using his American voice? — reading the chapter headings. It's very odd and somewhat off-putting, as it sounds almost synthetic (like a male early prototype for Siri), especially in contrast to the story narrator's rich "British" voice. What a strange production choice.

I just checked and "Shannon Gunn" (narrator of The Adorned) also does L.B. Gregg's Smithfield books. Interesting.

That'll be easy enough since I have not seen it in so long I've forgotten most of it other than Jimmy Stewart ended up being the bad guy.

This series is over the top silly shifter m/f erotica. Soooo hilarious. Over The Top!

Susinok, I believe you are thinking of the sequel to The Thin Man, After the Thin Man. It was in this second film that James Stewart was the murderer. :)

Ok. I may have been confused because it was the first Thin Man movie I ever saw. I remember staying up to watch it with mom. We were both shocked that Stewart had been cast as a bad guy.

I just checked another series in my wishlist, that one has all 3 books ready for whispersync
(Trudi Canavan's Black Magician series)

He definitely sounds like a born American for those books.

Yes! I love that narrator. But I just couldn't get past the first chapter. Honestly. It made me crazy to hear the name mispronounced.

I would like to think so! I know I am responsible for a number of our publishers seeing the financial possibilities. :-D

Occasionally. Not many, but there have been some.

Me too. Sometimes repetitions are ok ;-)."
Well, it was an expensive gamble, so it's nice to see it's appreciated. I earned slightly more than I invested in audio last year, so I did make a profit -- and I hope that profit continues to grow through the years.

This is my problem with Audible. They really do lean toward traditional publishing. That's what they promote. For example, I've received nothing related to series or categorizing titles as series titles. In fact, half the time they have the wrong editions attached to the audio books. It's definitely a work in progress.

Good Lord. I didn't realize Abi had Ty and Zane go camping too! Road trips, camping...I'm very glad I don't read her work because the comparisons are irritating enough already.

There is so much of The Thin Man to love! Certainly enough to get three fantastic movies out of it. (Although the movies from #3 onward do deteriorate considerably).

On one hand I miss camping, being outdoors in really beautiful surroundings. On the other, sleeping in a comfy bead, waking up to a hot shower and coffee sounds SO much better at my age... ;)

Well, there's only the one book, and it is seriously flawed. BUT what is good about that book is so brilliant it inspired a series of films that inspired a generation of writers! The TM films are directly responsible for the popularity of married sleuths in fiction.
Those films were what the Pam and Jerry North books aspired to.

I've seen a couple of those! Very fun.
I've seen a couple of those! Very fun.

I found a new place for me that is a series type database. It is called FictFact.com and it is really good. They don't have all of the m/m series but if you request them they add them. They do have all of Josh's work. They will also tell if there is a new book coming out.

I use FictFact to keep track of series. It's very hand once you have your favorite series set up in it. Then if you have not read an author for a while, you can check where you left off. I really like the upcoming calendar release calendar. It's not just romance or m/m or any one thing. It's all series books coming out at a certain date (provided the series is in the database).

Would anyone mind doing a search on your iTunes? Or I would have to reinstall or register... I'm hoping I don't have to rely on Audible.

I only get Kick Start as audiobook too

Thanks for checking. I hope it's just iTunes acting up...

I couldn't remember what this super useful website was called when I changed computers! I agree, it's excellent. And they're very receptive to suggestions and input, and respond quickly to requests for authors to be added etc. (It may be me who asked for Josh to be added - I can't remember now.)
I'm off to see if I can remember how to log in...

I just checked (I'm in the UK) and the only audiobook of Josh's which I can see is Kick Start.
