I'm willing to pay for narration, which helps. :-) A lot of authors will only do a royalty share, which seriously limits the pool of available talent.

And as far as paying for talent, I'm willing to take a chance on an unknown. Most authors, if they're going to pay for narration, they want someone with a solid track record.

I figure there are some terrific narrators out there who just haven't yet had a chance to establish themselves.

So far I feel I've been really lucky with my narrators.

Always a good thing to reward yourself beforehand :). And when you have finished the job you have forgotten the pre reward and can reward yourself again. Genius!

I think also that you very carefully match the narrators to your character. The voices in your head must match mine (that's kinda scary...), since they have all been just perfect.

It sounds to me as though you're making your luck, Josh, by being prepared to cast your net wider, to pay properly, and then taking the time to choose the right man for each book. I know I've already said it often already, but every single book and story of yours has been narrated by the right person. That's not just luck!!

I was slightly surprised with the narrator sounding a bit posher than I had imagined Mark when I was reading. It's okay, I got used to it. :D But I love how weary he sounds! Just perfect for Mark who especially at the start seems mentally as well as physically exhausted.

message 825: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 204 comments I loved Mark's British accent. The narrator did it beautifully.

I just re-listened to THYS (it's been a while) and was laughing out loud at Adrien's humor. One of the funniest lines ever - "I was trapped in a Perry Como Christmas special".

BTW, does he ever go on that great sounding cruise?

That Christmas party was sooo funny! Adrien's (and Kit's) dry wit and great lines are even funnier in audio.

With that sexy chick-lit sensibility...

Royalty share means you don't pay the narrator anything, but you agree to split the profits from sales of the audio 50/50 for seven years.

And non-royalty share means you pay the narrator up front for their time and work.

For obvious reasons a lot of authors opt for royalty share, and for equally obvious reasons a lot of narrators aren't interested in taking that kind of gamble.

Just listened to the first three short stories and loved them. ISOIS almost left me with happy tears at the very end. Spot on narrating there. And I really enjoyed Perfect Day in audio too. He made me really feel the emotions in the story.

I just bought DOAPK and for some reason it's not downloading onto my kindle. And when I ask it to sync and check for new titles it says there are none! But the audible app has it listed in my library, I got the confirmation email and Amazon won't let me purchase it again.

Looks like I might have to put it on my slow computer and move it manually to the kindle. Oiy.

Can't wait to start listening!

Becky Black (beckyblack) Downloaded it. Now the question is, do I wait until I finish the one I'm listening to right now?
Captain Harding and his Men (Captain Harding, #2) by Elliott Mackle
Or do I start on DOAPK right away and switch between them?

Decisions, decisions!

I think I figured it out. I went to my Audible Library and was able to tell it to deliver wirelessly to my device. My problem now, is that work wi-fi is too complicated to sign into just to download a book. When I get home tonight it will automatically download now, I think. Phew! I was scared there for a moment. I need my Jake and Adrien!

I am also loving Aoife O'Donovan's album "Fossils":

and I've re-discovered "The King is Dead" by The Decemberists. If you like Mumford & Sons you may like the Decemberists.

My (usually) 1.5 hours drive yesterday took me suspiciousy longer, too.
