I enjoyed all of that, Johanna. Other than dear old Tom Waits, I had not heard the others before. Thanks! :)
One of my favourite bands I discovered last year--DYGL. They're from Japan, but sing in English, and the dude has a cool accent. I got into Japanese music through watching anime, which often has cool music in the credits, and through the wonders of the internet, I have found so much cool Japanese indie rock--like these guys. Here are a few of my favourite tunes:Let It Sway

Waste of Time

Don't Know Where It Is

This is probably my favourite songs of theirs, but the album version is not on Youtube (what?!), so here's a good and lively live version.
I've not heard of Greg Holden before, but I really liked both songs! As you said, Johanna, the message of the second one was a good one. I also liked the use of the mannequins in the first one. They were so lifelike! Lol.

So I've spent the last week or so listening to mushy lyrics and sniffling into my tissues trying to pick a song for the the mother/son dance at my son's wedding later this month. Anyway, I've narrowed it down to these:My Wish for you by Rascal Flatts
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGB7I...
You'll Be In My Heart by Phil Collins

Any other suggestions?
Ooooh, good music choices! I do love All of them.
You might look into something by Josh Groban, but you also probably don't want to have to narrow your choices again. Lol.

I did look at You Raise Me up by Groban. I think we are going with the Rascal Flats song.

When I saw your link I thought as well that I should see again the movie.
I just listened to Ellen Kushner's Swordspoint. I terrific m/m romance amidst a complex invented city, historical. Sword dualists are hired to settle personal issues or simply to entertain. The best of them is in love with a mysterious, unhappy young scholar.Soiree politics, gossip, the pompous spoiled rich, the scrabbling, mostly likable poor. Lots of fun.
Must add, the author narrates backed up by a full cast.

I have one of Carole King's songs playing in my head since the weekend, when we went to the Carole King play/musical, which was so good. Apparently i know more of her songs than i realized. Here are a few i remember fondly from my "teenage" years, though some i knew from the "Dirty Dancing" soundtrack, and one from Kylie Minogue:Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow - The Shirelles

One of my favorite books, The Rebuilding Year is out on audio, narrated by Gomez Pugh. I've been listening for the past days and this is pure joy.

I like it!
So, Johanna, are they singing a song about Coca-Cola? Because it sounds that way. Any hints? :)

In exchange ;-) my discovery for today, the bluesy Canadian guitarist Matt Anderson:
Ain't No Sunshine
Let's Get Back
Drift Away
Broken Man
Alison wrote: "So, Johanna, are they singing a song about Coca-Cola? Because it sounds that way. Any hints? :) "
Yes. They're singing about a Coca-Cola drink spiked with alcohol (like a Rum Cola or such). And how it makes you lose your memory when you drink enough of it. And then you do it again the next night. :-D I really like the old video material there.
I've never heard of this band or the song before. The things I learn from Antonella about Finland... :-)

It's sad and dark and moving and beautiful. The video is impressive--it's animation via painted portrait. The singer/writer is a portrait artist in his other life, and it's a fascinating video, and sad.

I loved the old video. Cool song. Yes, our Antonella is a veritable fount of interesting information. :)
I've just found out that one of my favourite singers, Johnny Clegg, has cancer and is touring the US for his last international tour.Good news is that he finished his latest round of chemotherapy in February and his disease is now in remission. He was first diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and treated in 2015. After touring the U.S. last year, he discovered that his cancer had returned.
Here some of his older songs I loved so much:
The Crossing (Osiyeza)
Dela
Asimbonanga (with Nelson Mandela dancing with him!)

I'm sorry to hear that. It sounds like he's putting up a good fight. Thanks for sharing some music. I don't really know his work.
On another note, Nelson Mandela is so cute! Watching him dance makes me smile so much. :)
Last Saturday I went to a translator meeting about presenting your work in public. I had to do it only once, but colleagues regularly translating literature are often invited along with the authors or alone. We trained with a theater director with some exercises actors use, for ex. learning to follow the text without putting too much emphasis on words, like Oscar Verhar does with this Monteverdi's madrigal:
Sì dolce è 'l tormento, Oscar Verhar singing.
The example not to follow in this case was Cecilia Bartoli, which is for sure a great singer, but here she is not doing a good service to Monteverdi
Sì dolce è 'l tormento, Cecilia Bartoli singing.
((It's about unrequited love, here the English translation))
