Just as long as he's British and can carry off Mark's accent impeccably. I'm really looking forward to this.

A wonderful concert of Piazzolla and Binelli works by Cuarteto LatinAmericano last night in an unusual venue — for the chamber music audience, not for us since we dance there on Saturday nights. Daniel Binelli is a master of the bandoneon (the instrument, often mistaken for an accordion, that is the heart of tango music) who played with Piazzolla's Quintet. No, we don't dance to Piazzolla; it is classical music for listening or for stage performances. But we do dance in this amazing space. http://www.laspuertasevents.com/milon...

Can one do this series, and the other another? You can't waste good narrators! You have to use them and get all your books into audiobooks.

No, no ulterior motive here... Not at all.

I assume you've listened to both the American Love Songs and Life After Joe? I've been listening to those while painting the plinth of the summer cottage today. I find both good -- well, I naturally like Harper's book better. This is the second time I read Life After Joe and I really, really like the way the narrator's Scottish accent makes me concetrate in listening to every single word. :)

Becky Black (beckyblack) Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls

That's a striking title... :D

I used to listen to some of the free podcast novels on Podiobooks and I still have all of Nathan Lowell's Solar Clipper series on my laptop, because he was such a good reader of his own work.

Funnily, just thinking those Nathan Lowell books are in first person. And so are all of the Audible books I've got so far. 2 Adrien English books, Someone Killed his Editor and Patrick Ness's The Knife of Never Letting Go, all have first person narrators. I wonder if first person works especially well for audiobooks.

Does anyone else find characters voices off-putting though? I've listened to a few samples and liked the narrator but then they do a 'voice' and it throws me completely. Possibly because I'm british and the different american accents/empthasis don't always translate. I've also lost track of plot lines from listening to an accent :/

I'm a long-time audiobook listener and also British. All the audiobooks which I used to borrow from the library were just read, with minimal (if any) variation between the characters. But these days there's a whole body of actors narrating audiobooks who are expected to use different voices for each character when reading the dialogue, as well as reading the rest of the book very well. It took me a while to get used to it but in fact when done well it really adds to the book.

You would expect me to say this given that we're in Josh's group, but I can truthfully say that his books are superbly done. He's taken great care in selecting the narrators and they really get the voices right. They are definitely of the modern, narration style.

I would highly recommend Chris Patton reading the Adrien English series, and Kevin R Free reading the Holmes and Moriarity series.

If you really want the old-fashioned "just read the book" approach, then I would go for some classics. I like Ian Carmichael reading Lord Peter Wimsey (Dorothy L Sayers). Strong Poison is on Audible. And Josephine Tey's Brat Farrar and The Franchise Affair are also on Audible and well read by Carole Boyd.

To get you into American accents, listen to Bill Bryson reading his own books. For some reason the best of them, A Walk in the Woods, seems to be available on Audible only in abridged format (anathema to me; someone else reads the full version).

But the most important thing is that you should check who is reading/narrating, and you must listen to the sample. Listen to all of it!

Thanks HJ, I'll take that advise.
The books I've listened to (mostly samples) the readers have likely done good impression of the characters but they've not sounded right to me. Very possibly a personal thing.
Our library is ...limited ;)

I agree. The readers Josh has selected have been brilliant, offering a highly enjoyable and distinct listening experience with each one. On the other hand, I just purchased an audio book I have not read and readers here, and in other places, have raved about. It sounds like it was recorded in a tin can and the reader's voice -- lack of interest in the story and poor reading presentation -- are driving me crazy. I am so distracted by these things from the story, I think I will give up listening and read the book. Lucky for me, The Hell You Say is here.

The other thing that Josh has done is listen to every word of the recordings, to check for consistent sound quality etc.. It sounds as though someone should have done that for the book you bought! If it's that patchy you should try telling Audible - they may be sympathetic, especially if you give them examples.

message 490: by Carlita (new)

Carlita Costello | 1219 comments Thanks. It's not patchy. It just sounds as though it was recorded in an echo chamber and I am not enjoying the reader. In fact, he's spoiling the story for me.

That to me sounds like someone recording on the cheap -- which actually can be done with a high-end mic and the right sound-proofing measures. But you have to know what you're doing.

Does their library have books on CD which he can listen to? That would be much simpler!

I was able to transfer files from Audible to my Kindle very easily following their instructions (although I found it worked more easily if I used a Windows computer as opposed to my Mac laptop). Are there any bargains in Audible he could have? Or perhaps people could give him Amazon cards instead of flowers and grapes!

Or if they own an iPod or iPhone I think there's a way of listening to MP3 files on them. I think you have to get them into iTunes and transfer them from there.

Otherwise, I haven't tried this, but I hope it helps -

http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content...

Don't be put off because it refers to music; it says half-way down: "Those MP3 files can be music files, podcasts, or any type of audio file. Music files located in other folders or on the Kindle’s internal memory simply aren’t recognized and won’t be played."

Does he like listening to the radio? The BBC (and I assume broadcasting companies elsewhere) has a huge range of interesting podcasts. I think they can now be listened to on all sorts of things.

Yes, that's how you do it. Plug your Kindle to the PC and drag and drop the mp3-files into the music folder.

The actual audiobooks (that Kindle recognizes as such) are in a different file format.

If you bought at Audible.com, you could download it again form your library in audio quality format 4 and load it to your kindle. You can change the format in your libary with a listbox on the right just above your booklist.

message 498: by Antonella (new)

Antonella | 11565 comments It worked with one click! Thank you so much, dear Sylvia!

Now I should only find it on my Kindle ;-). It's a Kindle Touch 3G.

I saw CUTYS delivered, it was there for a moment with the note ''New.Audible'', but now it's not to be found anymore. I already checked the Cloud.

I tried to look it up in the User Guide and in the internet, but I didn't find anything useful.
