LecClier (sierrak) | 14 comments Hi,

The book I'm choosing for our March read is "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini. It's a story set in the last 30 years in war-torn Afghanistan. Last time I checked, there were several copies available in the library system. I hope this book will lead to some good discussion here in our group!

Sara (sdingel) | 11 comments I have started this book and am really liking it. I was surprised to see after bringing it home from the library that its a free ebook on goodreads :)
I have to say living on a place like Pakistan would be really hard as a woman. I love that my husband and I make decisions as a team. I cannot imagine believing my opinion was less valuable.
I really like this character, and am enjoying watching her story unfold, although I worry about a tragic ending.

Julie (jewlsannsbcglobalnet) | 56 comments Thanks Sara for the heads up on the free ebooks from Goodreads, I hadn't explored that before. I know what you mean; it's inconceivable to us that there are women living under such brutal conditions and who are controlled entirely by the men in their lives. Luckily, this book isn't only about that but also the power of hope, love and friendship. It drives the point home that protection, education and freedom for women is imperative not only in terms of humanity but also for perserving one's culture.

Sara (sdingel) | 11 comments Agreed, she is very strong, and while some bad things happen she faces them bravely. I am really enjoying this book. I will finish it today, and turn in the hard copy as soon as possible for those who prefer a bound book.
