Why not Christopher Hayerdahl? I agree with the Bill Nighy pick. How about an eccentric David Bowie type?
I think Benedict Cumberbatch would be a fantastic Pendergast because he's got the tall, lanky look about him, plus the sharp facial features and long slender fingers. As for Diogenes, I think Damien Lewis would be amazing. He has been a villain before in the movie Dreamcatcher and he was skin-crawling awesome! If they do a movie though, I just hope they stick true to his character and not change a thing about him. That's why I'm still on the fence as to whether or not I'd even like his character being put into a movie. Hollywood tends to screw everything up if the writers aren't involved in the process. But I still love Pendergast!
From the very beginning I had Paul Bettany for Pendergast in my head while reading the books but didn't realize it until I saw Legion where he wasn't even blonde... I never cared much for his career but I cannot imagine anyone else playing Pendergast - Paul Bettany has the look, the posture and I think he can pull off the feline movement and the emotionally detached way the character communicates with other people. And yet, having my previous experience with seeing favorite books of mine being filmed (such as Michael Crichton's for example) I am not sure if I am ready for the disappointment in seeing what Hollywood can do to yet another favorite character of mine, such as Pendergast.
New to the group, I've been reading these books for years and been using Goodreads for a while and never thought to check for a group! Anyways, for me, Pendergast is really one of those uncastables. I have such a specific image in my head, that I don't want a well known actor to play him. If there were ever to be a movie, I would want someone new and unknown to play him to keep it believable. If I saw someone like Bettany or Depp, it would ruin the believability for me. Which isnt to say that either would do a bad job, on the contrary, I feel that both would be well up to the task.
For Diogenes however, I would absolutely LOVE for Walton Goggins to play him. Keep his hair longer and crazy, give it a dye job, some contacts, and man, so perfect. He has one of those distinct faces, and he can do intense and crazy well.
I think there are a lot of good suggestions, though I haven't read all the comments on who would do a good job as Pendergast. I don't think the hair and skin coloring would matter too much, as makeup could take care of that. One person I can definitely see in the role is Edward Norton. He's a versatile actor and often very subtle in his roles, which fit Pendergast's character and personality.
I am still voting for Ryan Phillipe! Little bit lighter hair - a suit -

I think either Richard Kiel or John Goodman would be ideal to play Pendergast.

Hi Daniel,I think Malkovich could pull it off. Nice suggestion. Rutger Hauer is also an intriguing option.
I agree that John Goodman is a No in this case.
The Goodman suggestion was a failed attempt at sarcasm - but I do reccomend the Big Lebowlski - Cohen Bros. , Goodman and the Dude make movie magic. Concerning our favorite special agent - perhaps Michael Fassebender could be an interesting choice.
Hi Mike, OK, ha ha. Don't get me wrong, I love John Goodman and think he's quite talented. Just didn't get the sarcasm. :-) I've heard about The Big Lebowski but never saw it. I need to catch it soon!
I can think of none better than Ralph Fiennes. He's 50 though but still looks good.

Ralph Fiennes - Voldemort!?! Hmmm, Orlando Bloom with blond hair (think Legolas) or even better James Marsters, also with blond hair. Perhaps all would be great for our favorite protagonist or perhaps even Diogenes. But to me the silver eyes are the must have. Daniel Craig is an easy pick, but may lack that refined look you might have envisioned. Casting is no easy job!

Also, I haven't read a novel in a while, but I recall that Pedergast was described as on the thin side. But he also can fight, so it has to be someone who doesn't look to skinny or too muscle-bound.
The Relic movie version didn't even have Pendergast :/ Total waste of a movie version :(

Thank god for Cumberbatch! It was always Julian S for me before, but he was never adequately cadaverous for Pendergast. Cumberbatch has the right coloring (have you seen the photos for "The Fifth Estate?" Pale will not be an issue. Nor will the need for someone who can command a room without even speaking. Now is the time to strike.
I think David Hyde Pierce would be a good choice.

He's not tall, but I think they could work around that in the script. I think Pierce has the talent they'd need. Pierce is also a bit on the older side, so I'm not sure how they'd handle stunts. I have been thinking who could play Pendergast and really was having trouble with the look being so pale, but yet, I felt, had to be attractive, until I saw Benedict Cumberbatch in a trailer for "The Fifth Estate" with really blonde hair. It just clicked, perfect for Pendergast. The long, lean, elegance as well as the good looks.

Benedict Cumberbatch definitely sounds like a top choice. I haven't read a Douglas and Preston book in a while. I'll need to do so and post so comments about who would play the other characters!

I am glad you think so Beth. He is really just becoming a big star--maybe his newfound status will speed up the process in getting a movie made.
Just noticed the old comment about the Joel Coen directing and you are spot on! I hadn't thought of it before before I saw the comment, but who else could capture the subtlety. A really sad thing would be for...what's his name...Tim Burton to spoil it.
I recently watched "Thor" and I believe Tom Hiddleston would be perfect, pale skin, black hair, handsome.
Hiddleston's actually blonde, which is even better.
Book descriptions aside, I always envision Edward Norton when reading the books. I think he would play the quirky yet confident Pendergast perfectly.
