No, "creation" is the better word for it. It's not like counterpoint was lying around waiting to be discovered.
And thanks for the links! I pressed the "ecoutez" button on the English Notre Dame page hoping for music. No dice, but was plenty amused anyway.
I can't ecouter anywhere near that fast! On music, I think I would say "discover." Something like discovering the laws of mathematics or universal gravitation.

I have been able to listen to music from the Notre Dame site in the past -- but maybe not every "button" worked. It has been awhile since I have played around with the site -- used it to spot ideas for my kids when they were headed to Paris for vacation. As I recall there were some good "teaching clips" on musical innovations out of Notre Dame from the medieval ages. But one never knows what one will find when one returns to a site like that.
