Did you have a book that you were wanted to buddy read with someone, Judy? I didn't see your post over there. This is the link to buddy reads, if that's what you're trying to do: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

If you just wanted to connect with people and chat about whatever, then this is the thread to do that in. :)

Judy Robertson | 104 comments Thank you. Yeah, I have a “few” on my to be read list. I think it would be fun to pick a common book. On a chit chat note, we are packing to move. My hubby is pressuring me to get rid of some of my book stash. It’s terrible. lol. I told him it’s kind of like vinyl records, what if books become extinct! I’m not sure he is buying it.

Hahaha! Our movers always comment about how many boxes of books we have. Oops. lol

Are you moving somewhere far away or close by?

Feel free to head over to the buddy read thread and suggest some books. Hopefully, someone will be interested in the same ones and read with you. :)

Judy Robertson | 104 comments We are moving from Phoenix to Billings, so it’s a jaunt. I just moved from Billings less than a year ago, but the job didn’t pan out. I bought a new house and a bunch of furniture, so I’m not a happy camper. I guess everything happens for a reason.

message 2257: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Arizona to Montana? Cool!! My grandfather was born in Hamilton. Good luck!!

message 2258: by Judy (new)

Judy Robertson | 104 comments Thanks Kirsten, my husband is born and bred. He wasn’t keen on moving to the desert. I don’t know why? Lol

I've just noticed ........ we've been hovering in the very high 9000 members for such a long time but we've finally hit 10,000! :D
(Currently at 10004)

We just need a few more of you to come out of the woodwork and actually chat with us ;)

Oh, that’s a bummer, Judy. Not a fun reason to move at all. Hope the move goes well for you at least. I’m sure it will be nice to be “back home” in some ways near old friends and such. Will you be able to use all the new furniture in the new place?

message 2261: by Judy (new)

Judy Robertson | 104 comments Oh yeah. New furniture was long over due. I will haul it all back home. Hopefully no damage. Fingers crossed.

Judy Robertson | 104 comments Thank you guys for the kind sentiments. Thank you Christine for your offer, I will probably take you up on that. I have figured out that not all options are available on my mobile. I will make a list of my potential buddy reads soon. I just can’t create links to the titles until I’m on my computer. Unless I’m missing something? Thanks again.

message 2266: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 6832 comments Mod
Nope, you can’t add links on the app.

message 2267: by Judy (new)

Judy Robertson | 104 comments Thanks Kristie, I wasn’t sure. I did list my buddy request using my computer, but not before getting ketchup on my hands from a dirty keyboard. Oh yes, I love teenagers!

Judy Robertson | 104 comments I have always wanted an actual book in my hand, but with all this moving I’m thinking I might try an ereader. What are the opinions of those who own one? Are you disappointed? Which one is best, is more expensive better? Please help!

message 2271: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I have a Kindle Fire and I really like it. But it also has the ability to play movies too.

Also, if you have a smartphone, you can download the Kindle app and just use that. I use that sometimes.

You can get tablets cheap. But I like Kindle the best. Also, Amazon lets you get one with payments instead paying all at once. But they also have budget ones. It depends what you want to use it for.

Judy Robertson | 104 comments I have my phone and my iPad. I’m a member of Kindle Unlimited and never read them because the iPad bothers my eyes.

I used to prefer a physical book, but now I love my Kindle. I have an old Kindle Fire. I like that I can keep so many books in it and I can read at night without needing a light on. I also use the app on my phone occasionally, so I'm never without a book (also have the app on my laptop). My husband prefers his Kindle to physical books too. Plus, you can get free Kindle books on Amazon!

Vicki Willis | 1033 comments I have a kindle fire which I love and also a Kindle Paperwhite.

I use my fire for getting online and anything with color.

I love love love my paperwhite though because it is easier on the eyes, you can read in the dark or in the bright outdoors and it is lighter weight/smaller. It is just a reader though.

message 2277: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 800 comments I could never read a book online

message 2278: by Judy (new)

Judy Robertson | 104 comments Thank you Vicki that’s very helpful. I get the posts that say no way, but I’m trying to be open minded LOL. I have read reviews all day about the Paperwhite (which is what I would get) and people either love them or hate them. The hate list is short and some of the complaints are unreasonable. I do wish the price point would come down.

message 2279: by Susan (new)

Susan | 16 comments I'm pretty much sold on reading Kindle either on my phone or on my Fire- I love the portability and I just find I read a lot more now. I'm also a huge user of OverDrive which saves me tons of money- both vs. buying so many books as well as when I borrowed actual books I was constantly paying fines, tho I guess my library has moved away from that. Still it's one less trip to make with OverDrive.

So that's my .02, but I'm glad to hear what you guys like about the PaperWhite, I had wondered what the pluses would be vs. the Fire. I agree with you, Judy, I'll probably wait for the price point to come down, since the Fire does more and is available cheaper.

message 2280: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) My first Kindle was the predecessor to the Paperwhite and I did love it. You could take it outside and the glare from sunlight didn't affect it. I was so surprised when my dad gave it to me that Christmas. After it died, I upgraded to the Fire, it does get affected by glare. But I love being able to get on to the 'net and to watch videos on Amazon Prime.

Really, when you're looking for a device, you should think about what you will be using it for.

You can also download apps onto the Fire, like the Overdrive app or I even have a crossword app that I love.

I really use so many ways to access books. I read physical books, Kindle books, audiobooks (both Audible and Overdrive mp3).

You dont' even have to buy the Kindle if you have a smartphone. I used to hate reading on a smartphone, but it's not that bad. I do it mainly when i'm in the car or eating out with my mom and sister. (My sister is the SLOWEST eater in the world.)

message 2281: by Susan (new)

Susan | 16 comments I love audiobooks too, Kirsten, and also mostly listen in the car. Even though I don't spend as much time on them as some do, when I'm really busy it's one of the ways that I find I can keep reading.

message 2282: by Judy (new)

Judy Robertson | 104 comments I totally agree about audiobooks. It has helped me not stall when I’m cooking or driving and I love having that option. I have a phone with the kindle app, but al the books are just sitting there cause I can’t stand reading on my phone. I also have the new IPad Pro which is huge, but I hate the glare and when you walk outside it literally has no screen and overheats (AZ). I would purchase an e-reader just for reading. I don’t have the disposable income I used to have so I really only want to get it if it would really be helpful. Sounds like I just need to give it a try.

@Judy: Good luck with the move back. I hate moving so much that just thinking about packing hurts...

About the ebook reader, I loooooooooooooove my paperwhite. I had the predecessor to the paperwhite and it still works. My paperwhite was thrown in the bath tube along with my phone by my 1 year old (apparently they both needed a bath **sigh**). My paperwhite survived. Needless to say that amazon produced a good quality product. I love that you can read anywhere any time, without hurting your eyes. You don't know a word, you can have instant access to the definition and translation. Since I own a kindle, I went from 12 books a year to more than 60 (I'm at 40 books right now).
I was a strong advocate of real books and now I prefer to use my kindle. Yes that's possible...
I hope it helps!

message 2287: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) What's great about an e-reader is you always have books at your fingertips. Lightens my suitcase all the time!

message 2288: by Judy (new)

Judy Robertson | 104 comments @Savanes, that is super helpful! Im pretty much convinced. Now to convince the husband with my devilish ways. Lol. Not sure that works anymore.

I LOVE audiobooks too. I like to set the timer at night and listen as I’m settling in for the night. Then if I doze I don’t get to far ahead and have to rewind.

I'm not doing too much for the 4th. We're having a small cookout at our house. That's about it. I don't even know if we'll go to the fireworks. We might. I'm just not a fan of the crowds. We used to go all the time when my kids were younger. What about everyone else? Any 4th of July plans?

message 2297: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I'm not doing anything. (Except waiting for any fires caused by stupid men under the influence.)

Really, there's not much for Americans to be celebrating as the current administration is dismantling the rule of law and respect for the Constitution.

message 2298: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 6832 comments Mod
Yeah, I have to admit I'm not feeling particularly festive this year. I usually love the evening with fireworks, sparklers, glow sticks... This year I'm just not feeling it. I'm more wondering if I can manage to get the grandson into bed close to bedtime and avoid the crowds. lol

I did buy the standard red, white, and blue party decorations, but our cookout will just be 5 of us this year unless my neighbors stop by. Mostly, it's a good excuse to have my daughter visit for dinner. :) It's always a good time when we're together. I'm hoping the decorations will make us feel more festive.

message 2299: by Judy (new)

Judy Robertson | 104 comments We aren’t doing anything. I really don’t like to go out to much for these holidays, except to camp and stay put. Too many drunks on the road. Plus it’s hotter than a billy goats butt in a pepper patch. ;-) We still aren’t all packed. My girls decided they wanted highlights in their hair so I will put on my hairdresser hat at best. Lol

lol, Judy!! It's really hot here too, which also influences my (lack of) desire to be out and about. And very true... best to avoid the many drivers who've had more than a few too many.
