Kirsten (kmcripn) Thanks Portia. It's just so sad here without her.

message 1402: by Portia (new)

Portia I understand, Kirsten. You have my warmest wishes.

Sorry for your loss Kirsten. It's always difficult to lose a 'member of the family'. My thoughts are with you.

Jennifer - You're welcome. It is a great resource.

Anima Miejska | 1698 comments Kirsten, I send my thoughts to you as well. Sorry to hear about your loss, but I hope CiCi is in a better place now!

message 1407: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Thanks all. Remembering her last month, it better be a better place! I'm thinking of her chasing squirrels and cats in heaven! And someone to scratch behind her ears whenever she wants it!

I keep going back to this and I'm not convinced I'd want to read like this.

Of course the technology will become widely available, everyone will start using it and I'll get frustrated that everyone is reading faster then me, so I'll then start using it! :)

I know, right? That's what I'm wondering. Is this really going to take off? or will people just say no way? I was a hold out on cell phones, but now I can't live without mine. I have everything in there!

message 1410: by Lynn, Moderator (new)

Lynn | 4471 comments Mod
If the technology is there and widely available then people will use it I think. The temptation to read faster will be too much.

Another book quote has got me stumped, can you help you lovely people?

"My life has been a series of mistakes and let downs, some mine and some of the people who claim to love me. It doesn't help that my ex, my partner in a life of music and substance abuse, is still a good friend and very much around. But it's also because of him that I met his producer, the guy who is everything I've ever wanted. If only I could escape the demons of my past without my secrets tearing us apart."

Anyone know what book it is?

message 1414: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Remember Evelyn Wood?

message 1415: by Portia (new)

Portia Yes! Have you ever heard Woody Allen 's joke about speed reading ?

message 1416: by Angela M (new)

Angela M No , but would love yo hear it , Portia.

message 1417: by Portia (new)

Portia Ok, this is paraphrased from Woody Allen's appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show back in the 1960s. Allen said he took a speed-reading class that taught students to only read the words along the two margins at the binding.

"I read War and Peace in an hour," claims Allen.

Pause.

"It was about Russia."

message 1418: by Angela M (new)

Angela M Lol. Thanks , Portia .

I'd love to be able to read more books but I don't think I want to speed read novels . I'd be afraid of missing and not remembering beautiful language when I found it . I would definitely want to be able to read newspapers , magazine , online news etc faster .

message 1419: by ally ¯\(ツ)/¯ (new)

ally ¯\(ツ)/¯ (allykennedy) | 1002 comments I agree Angela. I think speed reading defeats the point of reading for pleasure :)
I like to take time to write down quotes and daydream about other worlds.

message 1420: by Angela M (new)

Angela M I sometimes stop and reread a sentence , or paragraph or page . While I would love to be able to read all the books I want , I'm with you , I read for the pleasure of it .

message 1421: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Speed reading should only be for things you HAVE to read, not for pleasure. That'd be like drinking a cheesecake instead of slowly savoring it, bite by bite.

message 1422: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 6832 comments Mod
Two thoughts -

One is that they claim that when you read faster you get more absorbed into the story (less easily distracted) and remember it better. I don't know if this is true because I am not a fast reader, but I've heard that in various places. However, I wouldn't want to speed through a text book or something like that where I feel I need to absorb and learn the info.

Second, I think we are all biased because we all love to read and enjoy the story. I wonder if people that don't read as much would like the app?

message 1423: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) HUH? I don't think so. You read faster you miss or skip over items. I think that is why when I listen to audiobooks I get a lot more out of them.

I have always been told I read faster than many people. But I think reading at your own pace is the best thing. Or get an audiobook, the worse my eyes get the more I listen to audiobooks.

message 1424: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 6832 comments Mod
I love audiobooks now, but when I was younger I couldn't listen to them. My mind would just wander. I think everyone is different when it comes to audio vs visual (paper/Kindle).

message 1425: by ally ¯\(ツ)/¯ (new)

ally ¯\(ツ)/¯ (allykennedy) | 1002 comments I could see it being useful for people that don't like to read for pleasure if they could use it for study materials, but then again, how do you make notes and highlight important sections.
I also wonder if it can potentially cause seizures.

Portia Kristie wrote: "Two thoughts -

I think you are right about reading faster when you get more absorbed but for me, it is the other way around. When I get pulled in by the writer I read faster. I don't always like that because, if I am really enjoying a book, I want it to last longer. Can't win :P

message 1427: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 6832 comments Mod
Ally - I wondered about seizures too. I think I read somewhere that they adjust the timing for certain words to seem more like real reading. I don't know if that has an effect. I haven't heard about any of the testers having seizures, but it certainly seems like it should be a concern.

Portia - I can see that. I sometimes read faster when I am liking a book. I'm still slow though. lol

Ally, I have had seizures since I was 22 and have never had a problem with audiobooks.

Kristie, I think it depends on the book and the narrator. Some books like the In Death series and the Dresden Files are much better and closer to actually being dramatized. Others you can actually hear the breaths taken by the narrators.

message 1433: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 6832 comments Mod
Kirsten - Ally & I were referring to the new app coming out called Spritz. They flash the words at you and it helps people to read faster. We were wondering if the flashing words could cause seizures.

message 1434: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Ugh. Thanks, Kristie. No, no way would I want that. Who wants that? Even without seizures.

ElvenRaven | 244 comments I actually think "spritzing" is a good idea. Maybe reading novels would be a little difficult, but it seems great to read news and webpages quickly... I'd give it a try when it comes out.

MJ I don't know if this is the right chat but,...
Can anyone tell much which book is the "I Cove" book the one Nadine Furst wrote a book about and there has been a movie about in the series

please I've read about 75% of in death series but not this particular one

Hi, MJ. I'm an In Death fan too, but I'm only up to Book 7 in the series. There's a JD Robb Group on Goodreads which I belong to also: https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...

I'm sure someone in that group would have the answer to your question. Hope this helps :)

Sooo.... I won a book on Goodreads a couple weeks ago. It hasn't arrived yet, but I just went to get something off my bookshelf and realized that I already own the book!! Only I would win a book that I already own.... doh!

On a brighter note, the sun is finally shining at my house. There are even birds chirping! I will have to find some errands to do. :)

Portia You are not alone, Kristie. With the nice weather, I've also been inspired to sort through closets and bookshelves. I am embarrassed to admit (spelled ad MIT by the Idiot Fone) how many duplicate copies of books I have. Thank goodness for charity!

Maybe the book did arrive already... and you were sleep walking, got the mail, brought it home, opened it, put it on your shelf... mild speculation on my part. Haha!

message 1450: by Lynn, Moderator (new)

Lynn | 4471 comments Mod
Donna - For each thread, at the top of the comment on the right hand side there is a link called 'date' which you can click on to swap from newest to oldest / oldest to newest.

Alternatively, at the bottom of the comments you can click which page you want to look at ie click on the last number to look at the most recent comments.
