Cleaning up "Sherlock Holmes"

The most useful tip I can give right now is that Librarian Notes are your friend. After an edition's contents have been identified/verified, add a Librarian Note. For example, if a given edition is identified as the 1892 canon collection I would add a note saying...
Canon collection from 1892 containing 12 stories.

This needs to be added to every single edition to which it pertains. (see this discussion on HCA, especially post 19-22)
For other items titled "Adventures of Sherlock Holmes", notes should be added as well, e.g.
Contains [number or list of stories]
Please do not combine with editions of the Canon collection from 1892.
For the record, the items are better sorted than when I first saw it. At that point all Holmes related books were combined into one massive lump, including Adventures/Memoirs/Case-book/ and the novels. ~shudder~

Brothers Grimm also make me want to cry at times too, but what I've managed to do there was done similarly to the way vicki_girl mentions above. Librarian Notes are your best friend for life in this situation!

Amen. I looked at some of the omnibus editions while I was updating my edition and realized that just because a book contains all the short stories and novels it doesn't mean it is the same as the other volumes that contain all the stories. I agree about Librarian Notes.
I noticed that there reigns chaos on the editions and books of Sherlook Holmes. There is special confusion on the editions called "The adventures of Sherlock Holmes" as this can refer to the 1892 published story collection as well as to the full edition containing all Sherlock stories (including "The adventures of Sherlock Holmes")
Can we have a very close look onto all the editions (several are duplicates) and clean up the Holmes collection(s) together?
If not sure about where editrions belong to, this question can be posted here.
