SOLVED. Fantasy book about a line of rulers - the males are able to turn into dragons [s]

All I can remember is that the males of the royal family can turn into dragons, or something similar to a dragon. Their castle was located in a really cold place, I think there was a lot of snow and ice.

Another thing I remember is that he had a mistress. She was sitting in a room consulting a period chart to figure out whether or not she was pregnant. She was, he was happy.

It sounds a little like Sarah Ash's Tears of Artamon trilogy; the first one is Lord of Snow and Shadows. I don't remember anything about mistresses and their periods, though, so that's probably not it after all. Still, I thought it worth mentioning, just in case.

You're welcome! I really enjoyed the trilogy, but it seemed to me to end as though there ought to be another story to come. It's a very satisfying conclusion, but still, at the end someone makes a bargain that will have consequences further down the road, and it really feels like there ought to be a new story, maybe about new, related characters, beginning once the conditions of that bargain are met. I hope Ash goes back to write more in that world some day.
