Ang Any suggestions for the March read?

message 2: by Felicity (new)

Felicity (happyblackgirl) | 45 comments Yes, I was just thinking about this. How do you guys feel about Octavia Butler- Kindred? I'm reading Pearl Cleage- What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day now, but I don't think it's on the list. I'm really excited to get back into Butler's stuff, though.

message 3: by Leonicka (new)

Leonicka | 16 comments I'd love to read anything by Octavia Butler since I've never read her work.
NW by Zadie Smith is also on my list. I've started it before but I feel like discussions would help me get through it.
Oh also something by Toni Morrison. Need help working through her books too.

message 4: by Lexie (new)

Lexie | 7 comments Please no Toni Morrison lol. All of Zadie Smith books are on my list.

message 5: by Ang (last edited Feb 18, 2013 08:28AM) (new)

Ang Here are a few on the list that seem interesting:

The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives: A Novel
by Lola Shoneyin

This Bridge Called My Back
by Cherríe L. Moraga (Editor), Gloria E. Anzaldúa (Editor), Toni Cade Bambara

Praisesong for the Widow
by Paule Marshall

Mumbo Jumbo
by Ishmael Reed

Crystal (mslibrarylady) | 21 comments I agree, no Toni Morrison...lol. I'd like Octavia Butler and Zadie Smith as well.

message 7: by Rosa (new)

Rosa | 22 comments Zadie Smith might be a good choice. Something from a Black Brittish writer. Or Octavia Butler, who is always interesting... Both are good to me. Praisesong For the Widow by Paule Marshall also sounds like a good one. I'm flexible :)

message 8: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (stephaniesuber) Hello! I'm new to the group! I missed this month's discussion :(.. Wench is on my reading list, sitting on my shelf... Octavia Butler is a good one.. Read Kindred a long time ago wouldn't mind rereading again...

WritingReadingSoul (writingsoul) I'm new to the group. Is there a list to pull from or just suggestions?

message 10: by Stephanie (last edited Feb 19, 2013 08:20AM) (new)

Stephanie Spines (stephanie_spines) | 8 comments Hi everyone, I'm new too! Just wanted to say hello and that I'm looking forward to participating :) Butler is always good. I read Kindred last year, it was brilliant and sure to elicit lots of fruitful conversations. There's also Parable of the Sower or Lillith's Brood (which isn't included on the list but I read the first 20 or so pages and it's descriptions had me covered in goosebumps) Just a thought!

message 11: by Felicity (new)

Felicity (happyblackgirl) | 45 comments So far it's looking like Kindred- Octavia Butler is popular, and something by Zadie Smith is next. My vote is definitely Butler...

And yes, I also vote no on the Toni Morrison... lol.

Lexie | 7 comments Does anyone have experience setting up a poll on this site?

Ang Writing wrote: "I'm new to the group. Is there a list to pull from or just suggestions?"

at the group home page select "shelf"

message 14: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (ashleyyymoniqueee) | 1 comments I've read NW, but I would love to read it again, with the group. I've read every novel of Zadie Smith's but the Autograph Man. I suggest starting with any novel of hers besides White Teeth.

Brown Girl Reading I'm game for NW!

message 16: by Felicity (new)

Felicity (happyblackgirl) | 45 comments I can't seem to get my hands on anything from Zadie Smith. I know that Kindred is available at the library though.

message 17: by Ginger (new)

Ginger (gingerrachelle) | 7 comments I would be happy with either NW or Kindred. They both seem like great discussion books. In actually found NW at a used book store just today. I couldn't believe it was there.

Sharon (sassysoulsharon) | 2 comments Ashley wrote: "I've read NW, but I would love to read it again, with the group. I've read every novel of Zadie Smith's but the Autograph Man. I suggest starting with any novel of hers besides White Teeth."

message 19: by Sharon (new)

Sharon (sassysoulsharon) | 2 comments Ashley, please explain why you suggested any of Zadie Smith's novels except White Teeth. I recently read a short, short story of hers published in The New Yorker and really enjoyed it. That piqued my interest and I hit my fave used bookstore. I grabbed White Teeth full of anticipation but, so far, about seventy-five pages in, just BLEH. Its been temporarily cast aside in favor of Ayana Mathis' debut novel The Twelve Tribes of Hattie which, thankfully, is much more of a page turner.
Onto the disallowing of Toni Morrison's works - please reconsider. She's a true master and quite worthy of group examination/ discussion. She forces us to stretch and soar. Isn't that the purpose of a great read? Oh, by the way, Tar Baby by Toni Morrison is my all-time favorite!

Leonicka | 16 comments Sharon wrote:Oh, by the way, Tar Baby by Toni Morrison is my all-time favorite!

Really? I started that book and was really struggling to get through it! It just felt slow to me so I put it down. Which made me sad because I really want to read Morrison's work.

I don't want to derail this thread too much but I'd love to here why you loved it!

Brown Girl Reading White Teeth is slow in the beginning but it's worth the wait. Do try to pick it up again. NW is her newest work and I'm anxious to see what it's all about. Zadie Smith is a really interesting writer.

Ang I created a poll. Tar Baby by Toni Morrison isn't on the list but Sula is...

This poll was created soley by the suggestions mentioned here.

Brown Girl Reading Sula is very good, but I'm not ready to reread it at this point. I'm set on reading NW because I've got. Kindred wouldn't be a bad choice but I'm not sure I have it. I think I have Fledgling. I've been waiting since September to start NW. That's when I received it for my birthday along with The Cutting Season and a few other books.

Brown Girl Reading There is a poll.

Keisha wrote: "Yes NW or Kindred. If someone could set up a poll that would be great."

message 25: by Koula (new)

Koula I have read Kindred, it's been a while back,I really enjoy reading Ms. Bulters novels. I am looking for the book by Zadie Smith, have not read and anything by her. I am not a big fan of Toni Morrison not to say the writing is bad, it is good its just some of her books just depression me so, I tend to read for entertainment, information and knowledge.

message 26: by Rakel (new)

Rakel | 24 comments I'm looking forward to Kindred or NW. I loveToni Morrison but sometimes I'm just not in the mood to go there lol.

Continualknowledge | 52 comments Since it seems both Smith and Butler are tied for March can we read both books and set up two threads and those who want to discuss either one can go for it? I'm sure there are some of us who prefer one over the other and some who will read both but it makes for a lively discussion either way?

If folks are okay with that. I can set up the threads for discussion.

Brown Girl Reading Sounds like a great idea.

I agree, two threads would be great.

message 30: by Ang (new)

Ang Lets's do two threads, like we did for the month of January.

Brown Girl Reading Hope to start at some point next week. I have a book club here where I live and I have to read Stranger in a Strange Land - big book.

Brown Girl Reading I don't know. I haven't started yet. Although Zadie Smith is never an easy read.

Kanita Carington-McDonald (kanitacaringtonmcdonald) | 31 comments Keisha wrote: "Is it just me or is this NW kind of a difficult read? I just started but keep having to start over . It kind of reads like poetry. Which isn't a bad thing but unexpected. Ill keep at it though."

Keisha, great idea! I may just try the audio book this time around. I started the book when another group was reading it a few months ago. I was excited to try something by Zadie Smith and...well...I am sure it was just me...but the book was more of a challenge then I was in the mood for at the time. I enjoy audio books as another "reading" format but didn't even consider it for NW. Well, gonna see if I can get it from the library now and try NW again! I've read and enjoyed Kindred not too long ago, so I may be able to join both discussions. Happy Reading or Listening!
