looking for some Cornell Woolrich help

Hello all

I was wondering if some of the highly informed noir fans here could help me out. I'm currently reading through a list of Cornell Woolrich short stories (not novels) that I had accumulated over the years. I've been able to track most of them down either in collections like Angels of Darkness, The Fantastic Stories of Cornell Woolrich, Vampire's Honeymoon, Night and Fear: A Centenary Collection of Stories, The Ten Faces of Cornell Woolrich: An Inner Sanctum Collection of Novelettes and Short Stories, Nightwebs and The Cornell Woolrich Omnibus: Rear Window and Other Stories / I Married a Dead Man / Waltz into Darkness or in more general crime/noir/mystery collections like Baker's Dozen: 13 Short Mystery Novels or The Black Lizard Big Book of Black Mask Stories - (all of which I've done reviews for here on Goodreads, or at least of the particular stories I read in each collection).

Anyway, despite all my successes (and a few more on the way through Inter-Library Loan) there have been a few stories that have escaped me (the tendency for Woolrich stories to get re-titled doesn't help either, nor does the fact that a lot of tables of contents for books are not accessible on the web, nor does his penchant for multiple names) so I was wondering if anyone here with a larger knowledge of the genre might be able to point me towards collections in which the following stories appeared. I'm not expecting them to be Woolrich-only collections, as I researched those pretty heavily. Nor am I looking for old vintage or pulp paperback collections from the time period, which would be unlikely to be accessible through Inter-Library Loan.

What I mean are things like that BAKER'S DOZEN book noted above, or, for example - the fact that Woolrich's "Mystery In Room 913" (aka "The Room With Something Wrong”) appears in the collection Death Locked In (as a good example of what I'm up against - note that even the Goodreads record for this collection hasn't been updated to give links to the various authors contained within). Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The stories I'm still looking to read are:

"C-Jag" (aka "Cocaine" aka "Dream of Death" aka "Just Enough to Cover a Thumbnail")

"Marihuana" (originally appeared in a paperback collection Six Times Death in 1948)

"The Boy Who Cried Murder" (I believe this is *not* the story also called "The Corpse And The Kid" or “Boy With Body” - which I have coming in another collection) (originally appeared in a paperback collection Dead Man Blues in 1947).

"Goodbye, New York" (aka “Don't Wait Up For Me”) (originally appeared in a paperback collection called Violence in 1958)

"I Wouldn't Be In Your Shoes" (originally appeared in a collection of the same name, under his surname William Irish, in 1943)

Again, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Wow, I struggle to find most of the Cornell Woolrich ones I own and they are just the main ones. I'm not sure if I know where to get the rest.

Well, the original title of "Six Times Death" in hardcover is "After-Dinner Story" and that collection appears in the HC book "The Best of William Irish." You may be able to get that book via inter-library loan--in any case, one of my local public libraries had it.

It's volume 1, suggesting future volumes to come, so maybe this one or one of the future volumes will have the stories you're looking for.

Actually, now that I read the amazon page, it looks like they plan on releasing all the Woolrich's stories in many volumes. Plus it says explicitly that volume 1 includes "Marihuana"

I recently found 'Night and Fear' (Trade ppback size) at a used bookstore (it was phenomenal). It's many of his pulp stories. At same shop I found The Best of William Irish. Felt pretty lucky. Because, yes, he can be hard to find. Glad to know some are being reprinted!

I have a copy of "Marihuana" in very good condition in my extensive paperback collection. It's small & I thought maybe I could copy it & send it to you. I just dug it out but unfortunately I don't think the spine would stand up to it.
You might be able to find a copy in "Acceptable" condition cheaply if you are just a reader. Try ebay, Amazon Books, Abebooks and Gary Lovisi at Gryphon Books.
I never heard of "C-Jay." I'd like to read it and if it was a novel, find a copy for my collection.
Apparently Cornell had other interests besides alcohol.

Hello Shawn,

"I Wouldn't Be In Your Shoes" was published in hardcover by Lippincott in 1943 and Hutchinson in 1946. Also in the paperback short story collections And So to Death by Jonathan Press in 1944 and in Nightmare published by Reading Choice Library in 1950.

"C-Jag" was published in Black Mask Magazine Oct 1940 and under the title "Just Enough to Cover a Thumbnail" in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine Dec 1965.
