30.4 Sandy's Task: What Are They All Talking About?
Sometimes, it’s nice to be in the loop, and GR has an “app for that”!
At the top of the GR page, there’s a heading called “Explore” – the pulldown menu includes the heading “Popular.” When the page finally loads up fully (you might need to go get a cup of coffee while you’re waiting), you’ll see a list of popular books this month. Look to the right, and you’ll see some other links.

Book 1 – Click on the link for “Popular Bookclub Books.” The list that shows up will be popular bookclub books “this week” in your home country. You can also change the list to “this month” or “all time,” and from your home country to World. Read a book that’s listed on any of these lists.

Book 2 – Look to the right again, and click on the link marked “Most Read.” Once again, the default list is “this week” in your home country, but you can change it to “this month” or “this year,” and from your home country to World. Read a book that’s on any of these lists.

All general SRC rules apply, even if a book appears on one of these lists.
NOTE: These lists will change – after all, “this week” depends on when you look at the list! So, when you pick books you think you might want to read, be sure to jot down the date you picked them and the list that they were on. You can use the lists at any time between the time the task is posted and the end of the challenge.
REQUIRED: Include in your post the list used, the number of the book on the list, and the date you found it there.

D.G. Love this task!

Just note though that the 'most popular' shows books most added to GR independent of country. And the Most Read shows either your country or the World. :)

So for instance, I can't see the Most Read in the US because I have the DR set as my country. So my options are either DR or the World. :)

Interesting! I didn't know that. Although, when I look at the "most popular" it does break it down by "your country" and "world." We'll change the references to "United States" to "your country."

Nicola | 173 comments Hi Sandy! Obviously these lists will change. Is if okay if I choose my book today (off of popular bookclub books for this week) but not begin reading until the first? (I will note date chosen)

sure. That's why I suggested writing down the date and the info. If you see something now that you know you want to read, no point not getting it down (and if you wind up looking at the lists later, and finding something you'd rather read - well, all you lost was a little ink!)

Nicola | 173 comments Thanks! Trying to organize myself better this time around - might even make it to my goal of 75% of the total points!

D.G. I can't see most popular in my country or the world...maybe that's a US thing?

I can see it for most read though.:)

The task requires the use of "most read." I misspoke in my response to your original issue about countries - that should have said "most read," not popular. However, since "most popular" is only in the task for purposes of showing what comes up when you initially go under "explore," that shouldn't make any difference.

D.G. Sorry, Sandy. I totally missed the 'Bookclub' part in Task 1! That'll teach me to read more carefully. ;)

Sheila (sheilaj) | 2221 comments Hi Sandy. I just wanted to say thank you for your task. Through it for book 2 I came up with - The Light Between Oceans which is one of the best books I have read in a long time. It probably isn't one I would have found otherwise. Have you read it?

I haven't read it, but I will add it to my list! I'm so glad the task led you to a good book!

Sandy, I think you'll really enjoy The Light Between Oceans. My book club read it for January and really had a good discussion about it.

Well, with both you and Sheila recommending it so highly, I will have to read it! Just checked my library website and they have it (and not checked out!), so it should be waiting for me when I get back into town next week.

Chaitra (chaitra_ganesh) | 518 comments Hi Sandy,

May I have these books approved? I'm not sure they'll stick on until the time I post...

1. The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls - Popular Bookclub Book - US, All Time, #19 today.

2. Dark Places by Gillian Flynn - Most Read - World, This Month, #21 today.

You don't need to have them approved, Chaitra. I noted that the lists are going to change, so just include in your post the date you found them on the lists and you'll be fine!

Well, I really appreciate the recommendation from you both. I just finished and I thought it was a terrific book. I'm definitely going to recommend to my real life book group to read - it's just the sort of book that's good for a book group, because there are so many ways to look at what happened.
