MOVIE RANT!
Vivid Light ~ ♥♥ Vivid Light ~ ♥♥ Feb 15, 2013 08:55PM
I know there has been a couple thread like this before, but OMG i have some things to say.

First of all, I was NOT expecting the movie to be exactly like the book. It is a 500+ page book, after all.

I thought the acting overall was good. Alice and Alden played the parts well. As for the plot and storyline... that's a whole 'nother story. They missed characters. Rather important characters. Marian, Boo, The Sisters, Ryan, to name a few. Amma as the librarian? wth!?

Important happenings were also missed/altered. Yeah totally Ethan finding the locket and giving it to Lena, then they only get the visions when they both touch it? Wut. Many things were rushed, especially Lena and Ethan's relationship. There was way too much making out, lovey-dovey stuff that doesn't happen in the book. The family things like the circle to bind Lena didn't happen, along with countless other things.

THE ENDING
This deserves a whole nother part of the rant. So what, Macon poses as Ethan and gets shot by LINK?! (who, by the way, was hotter n Ethan;)) Then, in the book, on the sixteenth moon, there's a party and stuff thrown by Savannah and Emily (well Ridley) and only after that there's the magnificent battle (Only then does Sarafine reveal herself and kill Link's mom) In the movie she reveals herself waaaaaaaaay too early. What the heeeelllllllll........ Then Macon dies and Lena and Ethan are still bound by their love. The book ends with Ethan waking up to Seventeen Moons (which by the way, sixteen moons was not mentioned AT ALL. ) But in the movie Ethan's memory is wiped from their relationship and Ethan's off to NYC. wut.

If they make a movie for beautiful darkness (PLEASE DON'T) I do not see how they are gonna magically mend Ethan and Lena (Caster spell maybe?)
I'm only just starting Beautiful Darkness so I'm not sure, but one thing DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS HORRIBLE MOVIE!!! It just seems like they tried to get a basic storyline from the book and add some different things to make it on the screen. It was not "Based on the book"

This was the worst movie I've seen. Or maybe I'm just really upset right now ;|

isn't it? I was actually so pissed of with the fake accents. Seeing as it's clearly stated that Ethan doesn't have much of an accent because his parents were both professors...
seriously, did they even read the book?

Okay, I haven't seen it yet but I pay attention to every detail I DID see and I know that it wasn't going to be exact, but DEAR GOD! Lena's hair isn't even black. And Ethan's hair is short, just like him. And their voices are so gross. I just hope the acting is better than the appearance. Though, from what I've read here, its not. Oh well:(

Like everyone else..I didn't expect this movie to be exactly like the book; that is impossible.(sadly..) But this was freaking terrible! The fact that they changed things..completely makes it so you cannot make any other of the freaking books into movies..(although they will try..) I am eternally mad..! This movie was crap! Ugh..!!!!

I agree...they massacred this book...why even call it beautiful creatures...

Danya wrote: "Okay... The movie? Maybe a little okay. I didn't expect it to be just like the book but... They changed the whole story.

they did have the book of moons :)

I think that they needed Ridley's lollypop and the shadowing song. I now a book can't always copy to a film. They had the main plot sorted, they just got to different points in different ways that were more suitable for picture. In the end, Ethan remembers. He sees the Gatlin Sign is burned and remembers all about Lena. I think they are trying to say some things are stronger than caster magic. Macon still died and Ethan still loves Lena back, so it didn't end that different :)x

Exactly what i'm talking about, shouldn't be called Beautiful creatures, woulda been fine, whatever, if it was more of a stand alone thing but this?

Okay... The movie? Maybe a little okay. I didn't expect it to be just like the book but... They changed the whole story.
With how much they changed they shouldn't even call it "Beautiful Creatures".
They take away major things like (SPOILER ALERT) Ethan doesn't die, they don't really use the book of moons, Marian doesn't even exist (etc...)!
And the freaking movie was 2 hours and left it's viewers very confused.
The actors were amazing, but still...
It's like what were the writers even thinking? Were they drunk or high, what? I really want to know!
They totally messed up on this.
The movie was okay, I will admit that. But, it's still nothing like the book!

no one said that, but don't be thrown by sarcasm after leaving a comment like that. There's no need to get rude, fair enough you liked the movie, good for you, however, there is no need to stoop down to a second grade level to express those views.

When movies aren't quite like books it doesn't bother me to much, I'm not picky because I know they can't be exact there's to much detail in a book but this was the biggest let down in book to movie history! Nothing was even remotely close I think they made Ethan look stupid and hill billy, Lena I didn't mind except she was bitchy when I thought she was meant to be more shy and wary and did Lena kill Seraphine? If that was the case how the hell is there going to be another movie? I really hope they don't make beautiful darkness cause that book doesn't need to be ruined either!
I went with a friend who hadn't read the books and she had trouble following and asked me several times what was going on cause it jumped to to many different scenes and the movie just didn't flow at all. In the end I think ethan remembered what happened which is why he called he name but it was all just so stupid..completely and utterly ridiculous

I was wondering if they were going make the rest of the books into movies

Same here my husband who never read the book dint even like the end and I trying my best not to yell at that screen

Same, but I was annoyed about the end.

In reality, Larkin being a light caster in the movie doesn't matter too much because he didn't really show up in the rest of the series that I recall. Maybe at the end of Beautiful Darkness. Wiping Ethan's memory was good had it not been for the book. And yeah, they messed themselves up by killing Macon and not Ethan. Like, they are going to have to do some SERIOUS creative writing. But honestly, overall it wasn't THAT bad!

I watched the movie on Sunday and plainly got pissed off. I went with my friends ( some of whom I made read the book before hand) and we all went crazy by the end. I mean, they screwed up a lot of things. Like making Larkin a Light caster and wiping Ethan's memory and how they killed Macon. WHY?????

I just watched the movie Saturday and it pretty much sucked butt compared to the book. I agree it can't all be the same because of how long it was but they practically rewrote the entire story. It was a little better than the percy jackson movie they made but not by much. Also it is clearly stated that Ethan and Lena didn't have southern accents(I know, I've checked)and that is only one of the many things they got wrong!
1.Where's Link's band?
2.Very important characters in future books missing
3.Sarafine got turned into a branch
4.The eyes were just plain aweful
5.Ethan didn't die, so...what about the 3 and 4 book
6.Never had his mind wiped
7.He was a sophmore
8.pretty much set up the movie so that there couldn't be a sequel
9.Ravenwood was a incubus not a caster
10. Ethan didn't get shot, he was stabbed

There are just too many things about this movie that is so wrong! It just pretty much ruins the affect of this beautiful love story

I totally agree with you i just finished the series and if they make the other books into movies its going to have to be different from the books because they didn't use all the key characters.

Now as far as the characters goes, yes that was not good and did make me mad. Ryan is sort of replaceable, but A. Who doesn't love a good ole caster dog? B. They are going to regret not having the Sisters in there for reasons you will find near the end of Beautiful Darkness. C. They are going to REALLY regret not adding in Incubuses for reasons you will discover after reading Beautiful Darkness and D. Getting rid of Marian was a HUGE mistake which you and they will discover at the end of reading Beautiful Choas.
And the locket thing made me laugh. I was just like "ummm... yeah... that..." and then I just laughed. My girlfriend stared at me like I was on crack and then she realized that it was different from the book.
And there really is no other way to show their relationship in the movie than to rush it. That's a huge problem with romance movies in general. The relationships are rushed and that's part of the problem with relationships in the real world. But that's my personal rant saved for a different time and audience. And there were plenty of kisses in the book, though I felt like they should have described how dangerous the kisses were for him more because that sets up part of the conflict for them as a couple.
And the circle did happen. It happened differently, though. On Halloween, Sarafine was trying to get into Ravenwood through to Lena, and she Kelted to Ethan to get him to help her. And they were circled around her to help keep Sarafine out and when it wasn't helping, Ethan was able to break through and when he kissed her everything calmed and she was basically safe.
I do wish they would have kept the end the same as the book, though. You don't know it yet, but Ethan being killed and being brought back to life is INCREDIBLY significant for not only Beautiful Darkness but sets Beatiful Chaos in motion. No spoilers, though, I promise.
They are going to REALLY regret not putting the Sixteenth Moon in there. But who knows, they may be able to get around that.. Maybe.
Link's mom didn't die, she was knocked out after Sarafine crawled out of her and healed by Ryan in the book, just for a reminder. Oh, and though it's not HORRIBLY important, I do wish they would have kept the setting for the "battle" the same. Because the lemon trees are huge symbols in the book, you'll see later.
And when she reveals herself in the movie, it's not her revealing herself so much as Macon realizing who it is, which he definitely did realize that she was Sarafine in disguise at that moment in the book.
And I didn't really like the change of Lena making him forget her, which I can't put my finger on it but I really feel like that happened in an incredibly small degree in the book but it probably didn't, but at the end of the movie he did remember her so that puts everything right again, sort of. I'm sure that for Beautiful Darkness they will have it be like she never waved his memory and I'm sure everything will be set in motion the same as in the book.
Since you haven't read it yet, just let me tell you, you will cry. It's a VERY emotional book.

i was pissed that they dint have boo in it but it wasnt as bad as i thought it was going to be

I have also seen the film and have read the book. I agree that the film should have had a little more to do with the book then it did. I have heard someone say that book two is also coming to the theaters. I hope they are a little better the second time around but I do not see what will happen with the rest of the characters.

I'm not going to rant but I didn't like it its was just too different. I've only read the first book but planning to read the rest of the series, plus how many books is there going to be. Is it a four part series or are they making more?

I totoally agree with you! I LOVED the movie adaptation and I want a sequel!! I mean come on! They can't end the movie like that and then not make a sequel!! I WANT A SEQUEL!! This movie adaptation was amazing!! I LOVED EVERYTHING ABOUT THE MOVIE- with the exception of the ending.. But the ending wasn't even that bad! I personally loved everything about it: the acting, the screenwriting, the special effects, just EVERYTHING!!! They got soooo many things right! In an interview Alden and Alice say that they are not trying to replace the Lena and Ethan that we have in our heads and I loved that they kind of put spins on the characters that I love and that they were not trying to replace my version of Lena and Ethan!! I adored the movie and I def want a sequel!!

I loved the movie so much. And I read the book before they were even thinking about making a movie. Yes, the book was a lot better than the movie. But, that always happens. But the plot was the same. And for the movie to be perfect, it would be like 5 hours long. You can't get everything you want. Deal with it.

The other way 2 think of it is that the movie an the book are separate. Plus I liked the movie so I got the book, so kinda a bonus that way coz the book really got me.
But I can understand that its anoyin when they changed the story from good 1 2 crapper 1. Like 5th harry potter that annoyed me.

but the nusic was amazing :)

agreed :)

i liked the movie but i would love to see it a bit more faithful to the book because i got SO MANY TIME THINKING : This wasn't like this... this didn't happen so sonner, this wasn't in the book and WHAT ABOUT THE IMPORTANT STUFFS

I including thought that they put things from the second book but i can't remember if Macon says that he promised to Lila to help her son or not in the book ? or either that he said that he loved lila or so?

and ETAHN DIDN'T FOUND THE Medalian in somewhere we was with Lena in Greenbrier when they found it but oh well

Movies aren't like books or similar to them but it was good ... to bad it wasn't as faithful to the book i was expecting to be... but it was good :)

verrry well said!

Actually, the family binding did occur in the book. If you remember, Ethan described it as the Kelting was fading between Lena and him. He rushed to the Manor to find a rather macabre party with fully hooded guests. He rushed through what I think were a series of hallways until he found the room where he felt Lena's presence the strongest. The family (Del, Gramma and Macon) were trying to rebind Lena after Rid just walked on into the manor earlier that day. Ethane just walked right into that circle to the surprise of everyone there at that scene.

They had a rather shoddy rendition of that in the movie but the family binding of Lena was indeed in the book.

I was disappointed by the esteemed supporting cast that hardly was put to good use. Viola David, Jeremy Irons, Emma Thompson?? They are top shelf actors!

Also, the lack of Marian and Boo was upsetting as well as the lack of Kelting in the movie.

But that fact that it wasn't bought into the first book when it should have been is reason enough that they won't bring it into the other movies if there made. My problem with this movie wasn't the fact they left things out the movie didn't flow, it stopped and started I didn't explain things propaly, my friend after the movie was over kept asking me questions and I felt I had to explain the whole thing to her for her to just understand. It's like they knew what was happening from the book but didn't think to explain things for the people who hadn't read it

In my opinion, Kelting was the only thing the movie WAS missing. They still have an opportunity to present all of that stuff in the next one though. Amma could introduce Marian, Kelting could be brought in (perhaps a link to bring Ethan and Lena back together) Lena could be made aware of Macon's incubus powers when Hunting enters the picture, and then Boo could be brought in too.
Guys. It's all accessible.

After I stopped pouting about the fact that it wasn't exactly like the book I actually enjoyed the movie. They could have done better, but there have been worse ( coughEragoncough )

I haven't seen the movie, but someone told me that they didn't include Kelting. That was one of my favorite parts about their Ethan and Lena's relationship. But I am still going to give the movie a chance, and I am actually still really excited to see it :)

...Greengals, I love you.

FYI: OBVIOUSLY NOT EVERYTHING WILL BE THE SAME! I LOVED it and hope you will learn that not everything can be transferred. so some tiny things didn't appear in the movie. Boo hoo, go cry in the bathroom corner... (kidding, that was sarcasm) It was decent.

Also... the music was PERFECT in the movie! :)

I actually enjoyed it. I know that they missed a lot of things, but lets be reasonable... it was a hard book to make into a movie. I think they did a decent job and I really think that if they made Beautiful Darkness a movie, that it could be better than Beautiful Creatures movie because everyone has more experience with it and everything now. But if you are one of those people who expect it to be EXACTLY the same, then I have something to say to you... what would be the point of making it a movie if it's exactly the same? No surprise elements, you would know everything already. Unless you are too lazy to read the book, that is. Anyways, it was pretty good, but a little jumpy. I really want them to make Beautiful Darkness because then we could see if it could be good as a movie series or not. If you understand what I mean... :)

Riley wrote: "I'm not going to rant but I didn't like it its was just too different. I've only read the first book but planning to read the rest of the series, plus how many books is there going to be. Is it a f..."

It is a four part series and there is a novella for Link :) I absolutely adored the third novel and the fourth had me in tears for much of it (ok, so did the third haha). While I think they could have done a better job on the movie adaption, I still enjoyed it-minus the battle scene. That was my favorite part and what hooked me line and sinker to this series and they didn't do it justice...but the rest I could somewhat deal with.

i didn't even finish the movie when i watched it, it was so awful that i just didn't want it to ruin my opinion on the book. disappointing.

I like how you're the only other person that I've seen mention this. I swear I saw the trailer and was annoyed when I heard Ethan's accent.......

Excuse all of you big ass babies, but it was damn good film.
Yes, I'm with you in the fact that the changed ending was kind of bullshit, but the rest of the film was fantastic.
Oh too bad you didn't get tiny little things that happened in the book. That's happened with every book to film adaption. Ever. Get over yourself.
In terms of cinematography, script, visual effects, and soundtrack- It was a damn good film. All this negative talk is going to work against a sequel being created because people are going to think WELP IT'S A SHITTY FILM BETTER NOT SEE IT when in fact it's great.
Christ on a cracker.
