WALKABOUT and RABBIT-PROOF FENCE were both excellent. Hmmmm...that would make a good double-feature.

HEAVENLY CREATURES was amazing too. I still hear the horrifying moans of the woman as she was being murdered in my dreams. And you could tell that Kate Winslet was going to be a major presence even then.

I've been wanting to see PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK for ages. Ditto ROMPER STOMPER, although that may be a little more intense than I'm ready for.

PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT is hilarious!

I don't care if it did win Best Picture, THE PIANO bored the hell out of me. And seeing Harvey Keitel naked only made things worse.

But my favorite Aussie film is QUIGLEY DOWN UNDER...HAHAHAH!!!!! Just kidding. My favorite is THE ROAD WARRIOR (believe it was called MAD MAX 2 in Australia, wasn't it?). To me, it's one of the best action films EVER.

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) Muriel's Wedding was a good film with Toni Colette.

Cindy (webalina) | 583 comments Phillip wrote: "peter weir made master and commander, if i'm not mistaken. i film i missed."

MASTER AND COMMANDER was another film that didn't do anything for me. It wasn't bad, it just didn't grab me. I remember when it got nominated for Best Picture, I thought "I need to see that." And then realized I already had. That's how little it impressed me. I'm a big Russell Crowe fan, but he just didn't make it for me here.

message 254: by Phillip (new)

Phillip | 10980 comments cindy,

do see picnic at hanging rock if you get the chance. it's lovely.

i guess my favorite australian film might be the last wave, another early peter weir film. i've seen it many times, and it still holds up nicely.

Sam | 548 comments gosh - i missed all this disucssion about aussie flicks ... how'd that happen?

lots of neato flicks listed here gang - and some cool canadian and new zealand films too ... but we're multicultural down here (most of the time) so it's all good ...

and again - Sooz comes up with a great t-shirt slogan ... someone tap that grrrrl's talent and make some bucks already!

last week i saw tomorow, when the war began ... noice little aussie flick - not amazing, but solid young persons' entertainment ... lots of lovely up and coming aussie actors

the story strongly reminds me of the 80's red dawn ... but less amercian ;o)

anyone states-side seen animal kingdom yet?

message 256: by Phillip (last edited Sep 13, 2010 12:41AM) (new)

Phillip | 10980 comments animal kingdom?

with marlon perkins?
;)

message 258: by Robin (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) Didn't they make a movie with Steve Irwin, can't recall the name, but I didn't see it.

message 259: by Phillip (last edited Sep 13, 2010 09:20AM) (new)

Phillip | 10980 comments last night i was inspired by this chit chat on aussie cinema, so i went back and re-visited (for the millionth time) the film flirting - with young danny embling trying his best to shrug off the brute force and animal instincts that surround him. thandie newton is so cute in it - they are such a great match in that film - adorable. gives you hope in a world that often seems bizarre and terribly unfair. and i love how it deals with race/culture.

message 260: by Sam (new)

Sam | 548 comments Hi Robin - yes Steve Irwin (and his wife) made a movie ... I can not remember what it was called but it starred several large crocs - of course ...

PG - I love flirting ... But you already know that

message 261: by Phillip (new)

Phillip | 10980 comments indeed i do.

now if i could only get my hands on a region-free copy of the year my voice broke!!!

message 262: by Sam (new)

Sam | 548 comments awwh i wish i had a region free magic wand ...

message 263: by Robin (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) I don't know what you two are referring to.

message 264: by Phillip (last edited Sep 14, 2010 12:25AM) (new)

Phillip | 10980 comments DVDs are produced all over the world. depending on which country the DVD was manufactured, the country gives a code that makes it so people who live in different parts of the world can't watch said DVD on a different region player. the year my voice broke is an australian film, but it has never been released in america. sam, sweetheart that she is, gave me a copy of this film on DVD, but it has the wrong region code (because she lives in australia and the DVD has the australian region code on the disc), and therefore i can't watch it on my player. i need a region-free dvd player (you can find them, but they are not the norm) in order to watch it. this is a film i really want to see, because it is a prequel to flirting, the film i watched last night. i've seen flirting many times, and would love to see "part one" (the year my voice broke).

message 265: by Sooz (new)

Sooz it's never been released in America? The Year My Voice Broke? that's odd. Sam mentioned this one and Flirting a while back and i found them both available through the Canadian online d.v.d service i use (Zip.ca)

maybe us post British colonies have a secret trade agreement ;)

message 266: by Phillip (new)

Phillip | 10980 comments do you use region one or two in canada? it's possible great britain, australia and canada have the same region code.

i really need a region free player!

message 267: by Robert (new)

Robert Beveridge (xterminal) i really need a region free player!"

Most players can be hacked with a combination of commands from the remote; look around on the Internet, you may find something.

I came to the party late, but has anyone mentioned Jame Campion's Sweetie yet? Jonathan Rosenbaum talks about it in orgasmic tones, so I had to check it out. Lovely, though the humor is characteristically harsh.

And Roger Donaldson. Smash Palace was a revelation when I first saw it on HBO 25-ish years ago. Gotta rewatch it.

Dead Calm, with that incredible SPK soundtrack. And Billy Zane showing he can actually act. How often does that happen?

And my Aussie guilty pleasure film, Razorback. Big beasties and crazy rural folks are always better with a darned good director (Russell Mulcahy, in this case).

message 268: by Phillip (last edited Sep 15, 2010 07:33AM) (new)

Phillip | 10980 comments yeah, sweetie was on my original list. really like that one.

haven't seen the other, apart from seeing about 15 minutes at the end of dead calm. probably need to see the whole thing for the film to make sense. :)

Robert Beveridge (xterminal) Phillip wrote: "haven't seen the other, apart from seeing about 15 minutes at the end of dead calm. probably need to see the whole thing for the film t..."

Usually helps. And you definitely get more Graeme Revell goodness. (Best film scorer in the business today, IMO.) Though honestly, the rest of the plot's probably extraneous to the last fifteen minutes. If you've seen Purple Noon...

message 270: by Phillip (new)

Phillip | 10980 comments yes, i did see purple noon - the one with alain delon, based on the highsmith novel?

message 271: by Sooz (new)

Sooz Phillip wrote: "do you use region one or two in canada? it's possible great britain, australia and canada have the same region code.

really? you think Canada would ever consider being different than our big brother to the south? you give us t0000 much credit! ;)

besides, the idea of a secret trade agreement between Australia and Canada - complete with code words and secret handshakes - is way more fun.

seriously, Canada is region 1 like America.

and Purple Noon, doesn't it have it's very own Phillip Greenlief?

message 272: by Phillip (last edited Sep 15, 2010 09:26AM) (new)

Phillip | 10980 comments there is a character named greenleaf in the film purple noon (based on the novel, the talented mr ripley) - but it is spelled differently - i am unique, by golly!

isn't his name dicky greenleaf though? something like that? where is tom when you need him?

canada is different in lots of ways. you won't find bi-lingual egg cartons in the states. ask americans to speak more than one language? you're tearing away at our national security blanket!

i'm sure you and sam could come up with a spectacular secret handshake - c'mon, your nations depend on it.

message 273: by Robin (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) Yes, Dickie Greenleaf, I think that is the one who shadows Tom Ripley, and is on to him, if I am not mistaken.

message 274: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (webalina) | 583 comments "canada is different in lots of ways. you won't find bi-lingual egg cartons in the states."

Wanna bet? Everything here in Texas is bi-lingual, only here the lingual is Spanish. :)

message 275: by Phillip (new)

Phillip | 10980 comments i wish california was more like that

message 276: by Robin (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) In Hawaii, in Waikiki everything is in Japanese.

i thought the character's name was Phillipe Greenleaf - they just called him Dickie. regardless, you p.g. are 'by golly' unique! on that we can agree. :)

message 278: by Tom (new)

Tom | 5615 comments The character in TALENTED MR. RIPLEY is Dickie Greenleaf. He is the rather foolish young man living in Italy whose wealthy family send Tom Ripley to talk some sense into.

There is another character who turns up, a friend of Dickie's named Freddie Miles, who meets Ripley after Dickie's death and begins to suspect that Ripley is up to no good. Which of course he isn't.

message 279: by Phillip (new)

Phillip | 10980 comments thanks for clearing that up, sir. i thought i remembered his name was dickie greenleaf, but my memory plays tricks on me sometimes.

message 280: by Robin (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) Yes, it was Freddy. Anyhow thanks for the update, Tom.

message 281: by Jeannie (new)

Jeannie (serenity77) Tomorrow When the Began was AMAZING!!! I loved it so much i think it would have to be my favourite film made in Australia although I loved The Dish as well...

St[♥]r Pr!nc:$$ N[♥]wsheen pictures, pictures, pictures ||| ♥ Zin Uru ♥ |||| | 482 comments Sam, almost watched Australia, sorry the movie failed to hold me. Hugh Jackman ...ummm...err....he was on ftv sometime back, looks better in person, I guess.

I loved Picnic on Hanging Rock, it's quite fascinatingly eerie , I actually could feel some resonance in a small corner of my being...lol

Kate Winslet was mad in Heavenly Creatures, although that movie is from New Zealand I believe cos I remember the girls go to prison and it always rains in Christchurch or so the horrifying voice over goes.

I sort of watched this other aussie flick I can't remember which...it was about an iron church that is carried by boat, I dont remember that story well.

Jindabyne was on cable recently but gave it a miss...

Curtis Stone is a dish.

message 283: by Sam (new)

Sam | 548 comments hey there peeps ... lotsa neato aussie flicks mentioned over the last batch of posts ... some debate about PG being in the talented mr ripley - i'm sure i woulda remembered that ...

BUT the freddo worthy question on the table today is - have any of you seen Animal Kingdom yet?? ... good, good, good to see Jackie Weaver get a nomination for an Oscar - if only to give a big golden nod for her performance

message 284: by Ariadna (new)

Ariadna | 618 comments I loved Animal Kingdom, what a great story, great perfomances. I love Ben Mendelsohn. Sam, I read Jackie Weaver was on Picnic at Hanging Rock, who was she?
I recently saw The Loved Ones, fun kind of gory movie. Have you seen it?

message 285: by Sam (new)

Sam | 548 comments ol' Ben M is fab - I agree ... he pops up all over the place and i always seems to enjoy his performance ... I think my favorite Ben M role is still Trevor in The Year My Voice Broke

now - I'd have to see it again to be sure - but I think Jackie played a maid in Picnic ... but her name escapes me

I missed The Loved Ones when it was out here - but it's on my list ... I'll hafta report back on that one Ariadna ... good horror?

message 286: by Phillip (new)

Phillip | 10980 comments i haven't seen animal kingdom - ariadna is always ahead of me!

thanks for mentioning it, and once again - nice to hear from you!

message 287: by Robin (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) Bright Star by director Jane Campion, don't know where the film was shot. Terrific cinematography. Weepy storyline.

message 296: by Phillip (new)

Phillip | 10980 comments really - i've seen less than half of those films. i hope i can find some of them. thanks, sam!

message 297: by Ariadna (new)

Ariadna | 618 comments Mary and Max.
I quote Sam "amazingly delightful are the only two words I could come up with to describe Mary & Max"
I haven't even realized that Sam talked about this movie in earlier posts, I found it on the lists she posted and then I found it in the "new movies" =( section of my movie rental place

Awesome!!

message 298: by Phillip (last edited Feb 18, 2011 09:44AM) (new)

Phillip | 10980 comments oh yeah, i watched that one recently (mary and max) - a friend recommended it - i forgot to post on that one. loved it. it's available on netflix instant, if anyone is interested and dances in that particular light.

message 299: by Sam (new)

Sam | 548 comments awh that makes me smile guys

message 300: by [deleted user] (new)

The Loved Ones is gory but brilliant. Xavier Samuel is in it. You know, him from one of the Twilight movies. Riley? In Twilight, you don't get to see how great an actor he is.
