is Somersault good?"

I liked both movies, but did not love either of them. Definitely worth renting for at home.

Sam | 548 comments Little Fish is fab (Cate Blanchet - from memory) - great version of Cold Chisel's Flame Trees (Aussie Classic!)

This Way Up is fully animated - not Australian http://www.thiswayupmovie.com/ (but now officially on my list!)

but the other doesn't ring any bells with me ... old one or more recent?

Christy Stewart (christyleighstewart) Oh...uh...

Good movie. Gay enough but needed more male nudity...or any.

message 112: by Phillip (new)

Phillip | 10980 comments you forgot to add that it's a road movie...

The road over-compansated for lack of acting skills with it's length.

Sam | 548 comments how naughty - I've been neglecting my Australian cultural duties for other pursuits ...

a few weeks ago I saw The Last Ride ... and right now I can't think of the director or any of the technical information a good, solid review will include ... It did star Hugo Weaving ...

now I don't want to give too much away - but if you get a chance to see this movie - check it out for the performances if nothing else ... I will add a warning - it's one of those films that wrings you out emotionally ... In essence it deals with abuse on a couple of different layers - physical, mental, sexual - not things that everyone likes to be confronted with

but as an Aussie flick - IMO a good solid one ... I've met men similar to Hugo's character - and his portrayal felt real ... and the situation and story was also authentic ... 3.5 outa 5 drop bears from the Aussie chick

Sam | 548 comments ah - The Year My Voice Broke ... John Duigan's directorial debut and such a gorgeous Aussie flick ... it's about a young man - Danny - coming of age in a small Australian town ... it touches on friendship, first loves, sexual awakenings, feeling like you don't fit in anywhere, and a bit of small town hypocrisy thrown in for good measure ...

Noah Taylor plays Danny - in what i think was his very first role - and is simply perfect ... a deep thinking, full feeling young man - certainly not the norm in this small Aussie town ... he is desperately in love with his best friend Freya - played by Loene Carmen ...

Danny & Freya have such a remarkable friendship - and even though these kids are 16 / 17 - it's still playful, completely accepting and non judgmental ... what all good friendships should be

enter Trevor - Ben Mendelsohn - strong, athletic, good looking (Danny's opposite) but a little out of kilter in his own way (oh - just try not to smile when he laughs) ... of course he sets his sights on Freya

there are so many sweet, whimsical conversations and narrations to fall in love with ... my favourite being where Danny describes his bedroom as the museum of desire ...

the performances are almost faultless ... and the soundtrack is - in a word - awesome (the man who shot liberty valance, tower of strength, corinna corinna, apache and more) - all placed at just the right places

love this film

the follow up to this is Flirting that sees Danny shipped off to a boarding school ... and i've seen interviews where John Duigan states there will be a third - that possibly sees Danny and Freya united ... but he'd better hurry up 'cos Noah Taylor isn't getting any younger

message 121: by Sam (new)

Sam | 548 comments that'd be two yups darlin' ...

there area couple of scenes where Danny is teachin' himself to play the guitar ... they reminded me of a photo i have of a certain young man and his guitar

Phillip | 10980 comments my awesome video store told me their copy was lost...so sad. and netflix doesn't seem to have it either.

message 123: by Sam (new)

Sam | 548 comments Margaret - I just rented it at the local ... it is a little old (early 80's) but fairly well known so I am surprised ... you're in NZ yeah?

awh bugger pg

message 124: by Phillip (new)

Phillip | 10980 comments it was celebrated back when it was first released (in america anyway), so it is strange to me that it's hard to find now.

message 125: by Ariadna (new)

Ariadna | 618 comments Don't know if anyone mentioned Jindabyne (Laura Linney), Macbeth (Sam Worthington), December Boys (Daniel Radcliffe), Disgrace (John Malkovich, although it’s co-produced with South Africa), Shine, Ned Kelly, Wolf Creek, Ten Canoes, Suburban Mayhem

message 126: by Sam (new)

Sam | 548 comments lookit you go Adriadna ... nice list ... i've seen a good many of them but wanna know more about ...
- Macbeth - really?? ... I can't imagine an aussie Macbeth
- Ten Canoes - one of those ones I keep meaning to see but never get around to ... are you able to get me off the fence one way or another?
- Suburban Mayhem ... ooo! tell me more ... please ;o)

pg - Wolf Creek is a pretty good aussie horror ...

really enjoyed December Boys - cute

Jindabyne was so good ... i fell in love with Paul Kelly's song a long long long time ago ... http://www.paulkelly.com.au/index.php... - which was also inspired by the short story by Raymond Carver ... the movie delivered a nice visual version for me (although it got a bit long winded towards the end) ... shocking story ... awesome performances

Not only an aussie Macbeth, but set in the streets of Melbourne; it's not amazing but I really enjoyed it.
I watched Ten Canoes in a flight to Australia so it was a fun experience.
Suburban Mayhem is a black comedy drama about a disfunctional family, it's cool.
I just remembered another one, but I can't remember the title, it was about two guys that bullied people in the subway (not quite sure if it was Melbourne)

message 130: by Sam (new)

Sam | 548 comments Last Train to Freo? ... If so it's set in Perth - my neck of the woods :o)

message 133: by Sam (new)

Sam | 548 comments I'm gonna try and track down this ocker Macbeth ... I wanna see if he's wearin' stubby shorts and thongs - ha!

message 134: by Phillip (last edited Oct 29, 2009 09:11PM) (new)

Phillip | 10980 comments macbeth is wonderful. i caught it on stage up at the oregon shakespeare festival in ashland a few months ago. i'd be hecka curious to see an australian version. i like orson welles' version quite a lot, and kurosawa's throne of blood (based on the scottish play) friggin' RULES.

Phillip | 10980 comments Sam wrote: "I'm gonna try and track down this ocker Macbeth ... I wanna see if he's wearin' stubby shorts and thongs - ha!"

"ocker" macbeth?

message 136: by Sam (new)

Sam | 548 comments ocker = an aussie that speaks and acts in an uncultured way ... which is most of us :oP

and lookit that the dvd fairy finally comes through ... wow!

message 137: by George (new)

George | 951 comments so, then why the distinction between the two words? isn't it, more or less, assumed as a given? what's the origin anyway?

message 138: by Sam (new)

Sam | 548 comments well there are some cultured Aussies George ... ;o)

if we're being accurate (and not makin' broad sweepin' statements sam) - ockers are probably a sub cultural group ... much like hillbillies perhaps? ... but i've found that most of us have some ocker characteristics - kinda rubs off on ya ...

i didn't know the origin - but found this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ocker ... not sure of how accurate it is but it's interesting ...

message 139: by George (new)

George | 951 comments No doubt, no doubt. some literature professor named Bruce somewhere, I'm sure.

Most Americans tend to confuse hillbillies with all Southerners, but those of us who grew up there know there are many different subcultures down South, each vying for the title of most uncultured. many can only be distinguished by the size of their trailers.

message 140: by Sam (new)

Sam | 548 comments there will no doubt be a Dr Bruce somewhere around here ... didn't mean to offend - just trying to put it in terms that were comparable ... :o)

message 141: by George (new)

George | 951 comments offend? if I gave that impression, I truely do apologize. I thought I was just playing along.

message 142: by Sam (new)

Sam | 548 comments yay ... all good then George ;o)

ockers are measured by how big their beer bellies come down over their little stubby shorts

ocker

message 145: by Phillip (new)

Phillip | 10980 comments so, an aussie gentleman is synonymous with american fraternity boy?

message 146: by Sam (new)

Sam | 548 comments ha! ... well they can certainly drink like one ... not sure their values align though

message 147: by Ariadna (new)

what values???
you're talking about american frat boys...values don't enter into the paradigm...

message 149: by George (new)

George | 951 comments an older frat man/boy perhaps, although this fellow looks like he could mix right in at any barbeque I've ever been to.
