Under the Dome

I'm interested in knowing why you felt a sense of hopelessness, regarding UTD's ending. If you don't mind, would you send me a PM?"

Looking forward to my next 100 pages tonight.

I loved the book. But I also was not happy with the end.

The characters in particular the Rennie's were the best in the book.
I liked how the Chester Mill's population was wiped out but i felt let down at the explanation for the dome and the explanation for it disappearing.
It reminded me so much of The Stand though i prefer UTD, both books suffer from a weak ending imo.

Hi, Angie-
Thank you for sharing.:)

I am disappointed.
I would say, in part, my disappointment is due to my own personal preferences - I'm not particularly a fan of science-fiction. This is the short review I wrote as soon as I had put the book down:
"Seldom does a film warrant a running time of over two hours and similarly, books running up to and over 500 pages are equally unwarranted. Under the Dome weighs in at a hefty 877, a vast majority of which could have been generously edited with minor damage to the story.
If you want a post-apocalyptic horror/fantasy novel (with perhaps less science fiction involved) read The Stand - well worth an extra 447 pages for the sense of satisfaction you feel once you have battled your way through reading it."
The last 200 pages I cannot fault; perfect apocalyptic, sci-fi-ness. The previous 700 could have easily been trimmed and one thing in particular puzzled me.. Why the file detailing Big Jim's crimes which only results in him finding and burning it?
I hold the opinion that if one is to write such a voluminous book every paragraph of every page should be crafted and honed so that everything included is of significant importance.
If anything Under the Dome has made me eager to revisit The Stand, which I shall do once I have recovered from devoting so much of my reading time (and effort) into a book I felt left me unsatisfied.

Hi, Donna-
I'm glad you've decided to try Under the Dome!:)

I really like what you said about UTD being more about the characters, and how they react to the situation, as opposed to the Dome itself. Thank you.

How apt!
I agree it's not about the Dome, but the reactions TO the dome. I really liked this book. Though the end, with the explanation of the dome, is so King.

^My thoughts Exactly!
Even though I was let down with the "Dome" reasoning, I too believe that was just something so he could write about what he really wanted - I remember when everything was going on in the book and every now and then Dale or Julia would look at each other (or whoever) and be like "It's only been <#> days!" Haha. Kind of made me think of the Mist.. Hmm...

Wow! Either one would be perfect in my book! I'll cross my fingers that they actually go through with an adaptation...

I have only recently learned of this book. What is it about?
