Mary Beth | 82 comments I liked the scene with Lucy and Max also, I am so happy that they rescued the dolphin.

Mary Beth | 82 comments And cold! But I love this: "I'd love to die with you and be buried in one grave, but not of pneumonia, it's not romantic . . ."

It's definitely not romantic, I can just see my fiancé's face if I said that too him!! Really! Wow! He would freak. I might just try it! (Grin)

Judith (judithgrace) | 323 comments Passionate kissing does warm you up, though, even in cold water....:)

message 54: by Mary Beth (new) - added it

Mary Beth | 82 comments Yes it does!! It would definitely warm you up!!

I like Phyllida's comments about diamonds: What's the point in having them if you have to lock them up in the bank and what's the point in having them if you're scared to wear them? In other words, there IS no point to having them. But she does!

message 56: by Mary Beth (new) - added it

Mary Beth | 82 comments I liked that comment also!

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 1090 comments Phyllida's a bit ditzy sometimes but she's not stupid. I think I'd have fun hanging out with her. Especially with the nice home in Corfu and the dolphin waiting in the bay. :)

message 58: by Mary Beth (new) - added it

Mary Beth | 82 comments Yes ditzy! I just wouldn't wear a diamond that size to the beach especially a heirloom!

message 59: by Mary Beth (new) - added it

Mary Beth | 82 comments She definitely would be fun to hang out with though!

Jaima | 71 comments I like her too. She's very astute, catching the currents between Lucy and max before anyone else I think. And I love the exchange between them at the beginning, when Lucy says,
"Who was this well-read father of theirs? Leo?"
"Leo," said his loving wife, "has to my certain knowledge read nothing but the Roman Financial Times for the last eight years. He'd think Prospero and Miranda was the name of an investment trust".

Jaima | 71 comments Lovely nightgown photos, by the way. The hysterics over the ring are so funny and believable.

message 62: by Mary Beth (new) - added it

Mary Beth | 82 comments Yes I loved the Max and Lucy scene.

Jaima | 71 comments Great quote about the pneumonia Tadiana! I just adore the banter in these chapters. And this is one of the best book kisses ever!!
'Forfeit for the roses!' Hah! I love it. And she doesn't do any of that internal jellification. Wonderful writing.

Karlyne Landrum | 1107 comments "It would have taken Dali and Ronald Searle, working overtime on alternate jags of mescal and Benzedrine, to design the interior of the Castello dei Fiori." Now that's what I call descriptive!

message 65: by Karlyne (new)

Karlyne Landrum | 1107 comments This whole chapter has to be one of the funniest that she wrote. "Murder Alley", the "tastefully crossed whips and spurs", "carved by some robust Victorian with a mind above fig leaves" all cracked me up!

Jaima | 71 comments It's brilliant, isn't it?

message 67: by HJ (new) - rated it 4 stars

HJ | 300 comments Thanks for all these great quotes!

Jaima | 71 comments Lucy's quips make me just love her!

I love her quickness, too. She gives as good as she gets, and she's nobody's silly, scared little fool!

I had to look up Ronald Searle. He was a British artist and cartoonist whose drawings were published, among other places, in the New Yorker. He died in 2011 at age 91. Here's a sample of his drawing that seems apropos for the Castello:

I looked him up, too, Tadiana, because he was just familiar sounding; he must've been quite the character! I always think of Alfred Hitchcock's Spellbound when I think of Dali, by the way.

I got an "image error" on your picture?

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 1090 comments Karlyne wrote: "I got an "image error" on your picture?"

I just switched images. GR didn't like the other one.

Mary would approve. :)

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 1090 comments This one is called "Family Portrait." I love it!

Jaima | 71 comments This is what makes goodreads wonderful. These searle drawings are great--my view of the castello has just kaleidescoped into something wonderfully different! Thank you!

We love this one! That's not a royal "we"; I have a three year old squirming around on the rocking chair next to me. Pat, pat, pat.

You're welcome! Now I'm trying to create a mental mash-up of Searle's art with Dali's, taking account of liberal use of alcohol and amphetamines. It boggles the imagination. :D

Jaima | 71 comments Whoa boy, does it ever!

message 81: by Karlyne (new)

Karlyne Landrum | 1107 comments I wonder if the Castello was drawn from a real place?

debbicat *made of stardust* (cr8zycat) | 439 comments I've just enjoyed reading this thread and the pictures. I am reading this now in a buddy read in The Reading for Pleasure book club. I had a pink nightie like that once. They are hot. I could never sleep in it. But, it sure felt girlie.

I think Phyl and I would be friends. I like Lucy a lot. I want her and Max to fall for each other. ;-)

I don't have my book in front of me but I think I'm on ch. 12. Coulee be 14 tho. It's late. I should be getting to bed instead of lurking around GR. Night all!

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 1090 comments Those nylon nighties! I had completely forgotten about this thread and our discussion of the Castello and Ronald Searle. Thanks for the reminder, Debbie!

message 84: by Karlyne (new)

Karlyne Landrum | 1107 comments And full of static! You could wake up strangled in those twisty things!

Oh, yes!!! Purrrrrr-fect!

Judith (judithgrace) | 323 comments I consider the Max Lucy kiss one of the best kisses ever! MS did so much sexual tension with so little dialog and I've often as I've read that scene I still don't know how the heck she did it. Beats all the gratuitous groping, grabbing, tmi

Judith (judithgrace) | 323 comments poorly written kissing/sex descriptions I've had to wade through sometimes.
(Sorry the other comment went too soon.)

Sara (phantomswife) | 104 comments Had to chime in to say how much I loved the "Family Portrait"! As an ex-studio photographer, I can attest to how hard it is to get humans to do that.

You're not missing a group read here, Hana, at least for this group. debbie~cr8zycat~ and a few other people are doing a buddy read of TRM with another GR group (Reading for Pleasure), and I invited them to have a look at our threads and comment if they liked. :)

And enjoying the posts here very much.

Peggy (dandelion_cottage) | 54 comments My cats think it's a masterpiece.

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 1090 comments My teenage daughter often holds our cat in the same position as the little cat is being held. Our cat has much the same expression on his face when she does that.

Thanks for nightie pics, Tadiana! When I was reading the scene about the yellow nylon nightie, I had a flashback of Eva Gabor on Green Acres and her voluminous nightgowns! Lol!

I'd say that MS's books are always with me. My daughter just installed a high-techy viewing thingie on our television. Yesterday, I called it "Lolita" and refused to touch it. Just like Sir Julian, of course.
