1. Obviously, Karina is not who she seems to be. The narrative follows Poe’s notorious “unreliable narrator” trope, but in Karina’s case, the unreliability is neither the product of deceit nor insanity.
2. Although Karina does experience a few nightmares, the story itself is NOT a dream.
3. Pay close attention to the language used in:
• The subtitle (A Tale of Inspiration and Horror);
• Karina’s short interactions with Poe, especially his dialog;
• The last two pages of text (what is the connection between what happens at the end of Chapter Sixteen and the recurring scene of the maelström?).
