SOLVED. an 80's horror novel titled Ghost [s]

The novel has a one word title: Ghost
The novel is about a deceased writer whom both Heaven and Hell try to claim. Trapped as a ghost, he must find a way to save not only himself, but also his still living wife. Other characters include a young black man and his grandfather who are able to perceive his spirit. The novel bears a striking resemblance to the Patrick Swayze / Demi Moore movie of the same name, but is darker and grittier.
On a side note, this is the hardest book search I've ever tried; Every search I attempt shows any/every title that contains the word ghost. Any suggestions on how to limit the search for a one word title? Or even better, does anyone know the name of the author?
