Duchess Nicole In fact, I think the only native English speakers in this thread are Cathy and I! Though some of the wording in these older novels are somewhat removed from how we speak, lol! Still, I FEEL myself getting smarter...right?

Blacky *Romance Addict* ehehehhehhe :D I love reading these classics!!! the old way of talking is so great, love it! And yeah lots of different expressions, but nothing that hard to figure out :) for me the biggest problem is getting the Higgins family. Takes me FOREVER to go through those lines :SSSSS lots of shortened words spelled differently because of the pronunciation and all, but oh well :)

Duchess Nicole Yeah, and for me, the slang is actually easier than the formal language at times. So I have the opposite problem.

Blacky *Romance Addict* Duchess Nicole wrote: "Yeah, and for me, the slang is actually easier than the formal language at times. So I have the opposite problem."

Wow really? I guess I'm not used to hearing slang cause most of the English I'm in contact with is clean, in TV shows or movies, so the formal isn't a bother cause i watch lots of historical series/films and so on.
The slang is a bit difficult because I don't hear it pretty much anywhere :D or read it LOL :D

Duchess Nicole There are a couple of words in there that I just skip over, cuz I don't know what the hell he's saying but I improvise. But the shortened words and stuff don't bother me. Sometimes when Margaret is thinking to herself, the way she puts the words together just doesn't make sense to me....like it needs more adjectives or prepositions or something. IDK. But it's not BAD...just makes me think harder, which is always good. Books like this sure do make me add some vocabulary that I would never use in everyday language, lol!!

Blacky *Romance Addict* ahahahha oh that's true :D
for me, the thing that bothers me MOST are the long sentences. half a page for one sentence, and I forget what the point was when she starts thinking one thought by the time she finishes it. Sometimes I've got to go back and check the beginning of the half-page sentence just to know what she's talking about ahahahahhahahahah

Quote : Take care you don't get caught by a penniless girl, John.

I am not easily caught, mother, as I think you know. But I must not have Miss Hale spoken of in that way, which, you know, is offensive to me. I never was aware of any young lady trying to catch me yet, nor do I believe that any one has ever given themselves that useless trouble.'

Not given themselves trouble , what do you think we are doing , hunh?

Duchess Nicole You're right, there's an HEA. But the whole getting there has always been too much of a downer. Although, I say that but I ve read the book twice and watched three different versions of the movie, lol! I wish there were an epilogue :). Have you guys ever read Rebecca?

Blacky *Romance Addict* Heard of that one! But no haven't read it.
I can take it all as long as there's a happy end, that's why i don't watch Withering Heights :((( EVER :(
