I just finished The Rook by Daniel O'Malley and had a tremendous amount of fun reading it. It's an urban fantasy/mystery/adventure novel that I would highly recommend to fans of both fantasy and sci-fi. The book jacket reads "On Her Majesty's supernatural service" and that pretty much says it all.

Erica (ericanaranjo) | 7 comments Part of my Goodreads Reading Challenge for this year is to finish at least 15 classics. I started off with "Wuthering Heights", by Emily Bronte, a title I've meant to read for several years but only just got around to. It's an interesting storyline that captivates the reader with an inside look at the relationships (& scandals!) that have influenced the two main families over the years. Spoiled rich kids, rebellious teens, a love triangle, and a gossipy servant with an amazing memory who is happy to tell the reader every little detail.

I'm slogging my way through Off Armageddon Reef, the first Safehold book by David Weber, who writes sci-fi that reads like military history. It's really slow and the writing is repetitive, but the story got interesting enough that I don't want to put it down yet.

John | 105 comments I'm finishing up "His Majesty's Dragon," by Naomi Novik. Imagine the Napoleonic Wars fought not only on the high seas but also in the air with companies of dragons. This is our book of the month for McKinley's SF-Squared book club (SF2 discusses sci fic, fantasy, and mainstream paranormal).

I loved His Majesty's Dragon! I didn't love the second one in the series quite so much, though. Haven't yet gotten around to the third.

Amanda (misslibrarian) | 1 comments I'm listening to Abhorsen, the third book in Garth Nix's trilogy of the same name, narrated by Tim Curry. Although Curry's female voices are a little odd, his free magic creature voices are impressive. I love the Clayr's library and the starting equipment for an assistant librarian found in book 2, Lirael.

This series is a lot of fun, but it does drag in the middle books. (Tongues of Serpents was especially tedious) The most recent one, Crucible of Gold, however was a fantastic return to form.

I just finished Crashed by Timothy Hallinan and simply loved it. It is a mystery with a "bad guy" for the hero (Junior Bender is a burglar) who is working for even worse people, but there is a great deal of humor. I would highly recommend it to any mystery reader, but especially to fans of Carl Hiaasen and Donald Westlake.

I finally got around to reading The Monuments Men by Edsel, the story of the team of men who were responsible for finding and preserving the cultural legacy of Europe during WWII. I had heard bits and pieces of the story before in other books, but it was nice to hear it from the point of view of the Monuments Men themselves. A good read for art lovers and those interested in history too. A bonus reason to read it: It is soon to be a movie with George Clooney!

John | 105 comments I just finished listening to "Cinder", by Marissa Meyer. Highly recommended! It may seem a science fiction version of the Cinderella story, but the plot has significant variations from the old fable that make "Cinder" a much more interesting and suspenseful tale. The narration is excellent as well.
