Bonnie (jo_mccauley1) I don't know if you all have seen this, but I thought it was interesting. Of course, I have a few different opinions, but generally I like the angle Mental Floss takes on things and this was a cute one.

How'd they pick "famous"? The article didn't say.

Some are duh obvious (e.g., Gone With the Wind for Georgia), but others look like "we didn't know what to pick, there's a recent(ish) book out that's set there, so we went with that one."

It's a good conversation starter, though.

Malcolm Blair-Robinson | 46 comments I suppose Uncle Tom's Cabin had the greatest historical impact, but my choice is still Mockingbird.

Bonnie (jo_mccauley1) I didn't notice until after I posted it that this article is over a year old.

I don't know how they picked "famous" either. I liked seeing the books from the various states where I have lived. Most of those I have read though!

Emily Murphy | 101 comments I've only read 5 of them. Is it sad that I'm from NH and have never heard of that book?

I'm from SC and I haven't read the one they picked for us (though I have heard of it). My own pick would be The Prince of Tides, by Pat Conroy.

Malcolm Blair-Robinson | 46 comments How much of the 'famous' is to do with whether the book is made into a film?

Good question.

Linda | 58 comments When people find out I'm from Oklahoma, if they think of a book at all it's always The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. When I think of a book about South Dakota, I think of Little House on the Prairie. Maybe the list-maker didn't want to name the same author twice, but really, don't most people think of Laura Ingells Wilder before they think of Tom Brokaw when it comes to South Dakota?

I know I would.

Bonnie (jo_mccauley1) I think of Wilder, but I almost always associate Dee Brown with the Dakotas. He wasn't born there, but his books make me mentally shift to him for that section of the country. LOL
