Morgan Zimmerman "They passed a large cotton field with five or six graves fenced in the middle of it, like a small island. "Look at the graveyard!" the grandmother said, pointing it out. "That was the old family burying ground. That belonged to the plantation." "Where's the plantation?" John Wesley asked. "Gone with the Wind," said the grandmother. "Ha. Ha."

This quote gives a great understanding of the time frame the story takes place in and it also gives us a bit of information on the characters. I selected this quote mainly for that reason, but also because it made me laugh. This family is going on a road trip to Florida and not one of them want to go. Any of you with larger families can probably relate to this scenario, just like I was able to.

Jeri Massi The scene is also a statement of the family's awareness, and in particular the grandmother's knowledge, that life is fleeting. The story is full of such hints and messages to the family: setting the odometer to show the passing miles, passing Tombsboro, visiting the Saturnine barbecuer and his homunculus, etc. We can all relate to the family, because we are all on the same journey.

D.J. Adamson LOVE, and I am saying LOVE here, Flannery O'Connor. If only I could write that good.

The ending as all her stories is the perfect ending.
