Hi Lola, Hope you both had a lovely dayThank you for a. sking. Judy seems to be improving since she finished her treatment & they are getting the radiotherapy pain under control. They are waiting for the radiotherapy treatment to settle then they will scan her again to see the outcome. As they cannot operate to remove it I think it will then be 'a watching game' & hopefully she will be able to get on with life for a while. xx
The result's of Mark's scan were a mixture of good/bad. The tumour has shrunk by 1/3 but is still inoperable & likely to remain so. He is going on holiday for a week on Friday & then it's back to 6 more sessions of chemo followed by radiotherapy with a break in the middle for his wedding. Hopefully that will be fairly successful as well. He seems to be coping very well most of the time & getting on with his life; which is all he can do at the moment.

Dear Paula,
It sounds as though you were completely consumed with the fitness experience. Did it feel like a "cleansing" experience or more of a jump start to being a healthier more focused on the body feeling better so your mind can calm and you can destress with the things you learned. I would love to hear what a typical day was like from meals to water they made you drink to keep hydrated to exercise program. Was it the same activities day to day or was each day filled with different things? Did they gi e you choices for your day? I am proud of you and so jealous. I have wanted to do something like that to try to jump start a healthier lifestyle but I feel it is impossible with Heather needing me 24/7. Maybe I can find a way to do something similar from home.
Love you,
Jina

A day late, and a dollar short as usual, ladies! This has been a whirlwind of a week - I traveled 360 miles in one day, from home to Napa Valley, back home, then out to the coast and back. And there's some serious emotional chaos going on with my daughter - who lives 3000 miles away. We've spent hours on the phone in the last few days, and I've got a "go bag" packed in case I have to make a flying trip out to Virginia to lend support.

So please let me catch up by saying Happy Birthday to our November sisters -- and remind us all that age is just a number! Especially for those of us who love to read, we can get lost in the characters and places we love, and they will keep us feeling young with every turn of the page!

I'm going to set up a Google document so I can collect Birthdays and Mailing Addresses for those who are willing to give out your information. It's holiday time, and I know many of us still try to send out good old-fashioned holiday cards. And I want to do a better job of staying on top of birthdays too.

AND, finally, we need to talk holidays. Last year, we did an Elfster gift exchange. This year, we talked about that, and/or making a donation to benefit those affected by Cystic Fibrosis. I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts on how you'd like to celebrate as a "virtual" group this year!

Please post your thoughts in a new discussion thread I'll create today under Holidays 2016.

Take care and have a blessed day.
Paula

Lola | 1001 comments Hi All,
I thought we could all use this "Word" before we start in on The Holiday Season ! Love You All, Lola

Inner Peace
Peace is my breath, and serenity is the beat of my heart.
Monday, November 21, 2016

There is a basic rhythm in my body that resonates from a divine awareness that pulsates through all living beings. This pattern is found in the measure of my breath and in the cadence of my heartbeat.
By quieting my mind and focusing on the natural pulse of my body, I create vital breathing space, both literally and figuratively. When I practice, gently focusing on inhaling and exhaling, my body and mind instinctively relax. My pulse slows and steadies.
By noticing my body’s rhythms, I relax into a state of deep peace. Throughout my entire being, I feel a sense of harmony, belonging, and comfort. As I continue to breathe, I am aware that Almighty Spirit is breathing through me and as me.

But truly it is the spirit in a mortal, the breath of the Almighty, that makes for understanding.—Job 32:8

My husband Michael and my anniversary was yesterday. But unfortunately we didnt get to spend it or today together. Heather is in the hospital with "near" pneumonia. Right now they are calling respiratory distress. Her oxygen level was 82 when we brought her in two days ago. This is the first time on the adult ward. The Doctors want to change everything., her medicines, her feed the water I give her etc... At the 4 am feeding the nurse said she wont be going home today because of the holiday and not being able to get her new feed ordered etc...
I hope you all have a fantastic Thanksgiving and travel safe for those of you going to relatives.

Hello, everyone -- the weekend was a bit of a wild whirlwind here, so I missed the messages until today...

Jina, I'm so sorry to hear that Heather has been ill. I hope she's better and back home by the time you read this. You will be in our prayers, and once things settle down for you, make sure and treat yourself to a proper anniversary celebration.

Lola - how exciting to hear that we get the Callahan boys in audio!
Like I need another reason to love them...

Today is a long day for me -- I have physical therapy, one of my last appointments, thank goodness; then I have my writing workshop over on the coast tonight. I really need a boost there...I have run head-first into a stumbling block when it comes to writing, and it's all in my head. The words aren't coming because I'm stuck in a temporary wave of self-doubt. I hear that's not unusual, but it's really, really, really inconvenient.

Peace to all of you as we gear up for the holiday madness - it might be all around us, but it doesn't have to be IN us. Take care.

Jina Gibbs | 763 comments Dear group,
Thank you so much for your prayers and well wishes. We appreciate it. Heather saw her new Dr today. He is very nice and listened to me about Heathers care. I think Heather will feel much better now that this new Dr is putting her back on the meds and feed she had before the hospitalization. Shes still sick with a cough and runny nose and migraines, the kind that make her extra sensitive to light and sound and the fatigue and balance is way off. She has fallen 2 times. She wears sunglasses because lights bother her and is extremely anxious and confused. The new Dr undid every change the charge nurse made last week so hopefully Heather will be feeling better real soon.
Speaking of people looking for work. There is a nationwide work from home company called Teletech. One of my very best friends works at home and makes between 600$-800$ a week. You are tied to the phone for your shift to take customer calls but they train you and I think they even have a benefit program. You could check that out. I have a couple other suggestions but I want to check on them before I pass the information on to you.
Love you all,
Jina and the girls.

Greetings all --

Jina - so happy to hear that Heather is on track to feel better by the day, in plenty of time to enjoy the holiday season. To those who are struggling to find the right job, believe me, I understand how frustrating it is and I hope the right company will recognize what you have to offer, so you can have the peace of mind you deserve.

I'm getting hit with some new work assignments from my very, very part-time job, so I need to take advantage of the work before it dries up again. Writing is on the back burner at the moment and it feels...sad. But nothing lasts forever, as I remind myself every time I get on the treadmill!

By the end of the week, I'll sort through holiday ideas for the group. Feedback has been positive, but there aren't too many who've expressed interest in a group activity. It's understandable at such a busy time of year, especially since we have a mix of challenges within our group. But it will still be merry!

Our newlywed kids are coming to stay with us this weekend, which means I need to kick in the afterburners and clean house, set up the guest room, lay in some groceries -- LOTS of groceries -- and focus on family starting Friday evening. I'll touch base between now and then, though!

Take care
Paula

It's me again...I've been in my usual tailspin this week. I Worked yesterday and am working in Laytonville again today. Google it, then look for the ends of the earth. That's where I'll be today and why I'm so exhausted when I get home. My project deadline is tomorrow. I'll be thrilled when it gets here.

It's pouring here and we have our first major flood watch today and tomorrow. We love the rain, hate the mudslides on these winding mountain roads. That makes the trip to work all the more "interesting"

I'm "off" tomorrow and will catch up on group business then, so not to worry. We will get this holiday moving forward.

Then I can't wait to curl up with a Christmas book marathon.

Peace, ladies.

message 1638: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello, all -- I'm writing this at 1:37 a.m. Eastern Time, from around 30,000 feet in the air, heading home to San Francisco after not one, but two stops - Atlanta and Minneapolis. I'm so tired I feel like I took a trip around the globe. But that's what a full day and 4 airports can do to you.

We left snow, and are heading into what's been called unprecedented rain - flood watches and warnings from SF to our home in Ukiah. We are getting quite the reputation for being the bringers of weather catastrophes. Like I've said many times before, we never come back without at least one story.

We'll be in SF at a little after MN Pacific Time, then we have to drive 2.5 hours to Ukiah, hoping that we cross the bridge before the river reaches flood stage. We're expecting 3-5 inches of rain over the next couple of days, with flooding they say hasn't happened here since 1997 - maybe even 1986.

All I know is I need a shower, a long nap, and a comfortable bed. Tomorrow I'm supposed to meet with my writing coach to get his impression of my first 30,000 words...I'm not sure I'd be up for that if I'd slept for a week.

But all in all, we had a wonderful vacation with our family - we made lots of memories - the blizzard being only one of them.

I'll probably not be checking in until Wednesday, because I suspect I'll be a zombie.

Take care, peace and health to all.

xo
Paula

message 1640: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi, Melinda! It's been very quiet in here since late last week, so I hope everyone is safe, warm, and blessed. We are between storms here - but are expecting two big ones that will drop up to 6" of rain again. We need the rain -- it's the temporary flooding that's a mess here.

It's warm here mid-day - in the 60's - and my rose bushes are confused too. Just as we get ready to prune them back, we have buds everywhere....so I don't have the heart to trim them off until they bloom and I can brighten the indoors with them.

Everyone is healthy here, with the exception of my foot...the stress fracture just isn't getting better, and the doc may have to put me in one of those lovely boots soon. There will be no skiing for me this season, and the Sierra is absolutely inundated with fresh powder. I've told Ray to go without me - or prop me somewhere with a big hot toddy -- but he's not buying it. Our anniversary is next week, though, so I MAY try to convince him to take me up to Tahoe so I can write while he scratches his urge to use his snowboard. :-)

Take care & God Bless!

Linda (lindamanthey) | 413 comments Hello everyone.
Just checking in. I have had a "me day" of catching up on much needed rest and doing nothing. Tomorrow I have to make up for all I did not do today, but I think I will be more ready to do it. I just needed to relax and get rid of the stress that has built up over the past couple of months.
Our weather is turning warmer. It has been as low as 13 degrees some mornings and not warmed up more than near 30 degrees some days. Today we were 42 degrees so we are having a heat wave lol.
Paula I am so sorry your foot is not healing as well as you expected. I well know what that is like. When I broke my ankle I went from a boot to a cast and back to the boot in a four month cycle. I pray you heal much quicker and don't have to go the way of the dreaded boot. I hated it. I am not the most graceful individual on the planet so it was not a pretty sight or a good experience for me. Since it is just a stress fracture perhaps you can get away with just the shoe type of boot. I had the knee high, air pump version and it was not fun. Sorry don't mean to be a Debbie downer, .lol.
I have a funny story for you. Dave let the chickens out in the yard today so they could hunt and peck for tasty tidbits lol. He took a piece of bread out and threw it on the deck. They all flocked up and one hen grabbed it and took off running. The other hens ran after it. When the hen who had the bread shook it a piece broke off and she ran with it and all but one of the hens chased after her. One hen held back and had the rest of the bread for herself but soon abandoned it to join the other hens. It was so funny. I have not laughed that hard in a very long time. I wish I had video, words can not describe it lol.
Have a good night everyone and may God peace be with you.

Not a lot happening here with us in the UK, weather very changeable here too, We had a light covering of snow last Friday & then dry & frosty or milder & rain. Not much incentive to get on with anything. Both of us still recoverying from a flu virus so still only getting up when we wake up, usually about 8.30 am.
Mark re-started his chemo cycle last Thursday & it was a bit rough for a couple of days even though they only gave him 50% as he is not as strong this time round. He's still working when he can.

Lesley,
So happy to hear you are feeling better. The flu bug has been a bad this year on this side of the pond. Several people have contracted pneumonia and a few have died. I got my flu shot at work but I still got sick. They said it was a new strain that was not included in the vaccine. We get our vaccine free of charge at the pharmacy where I work.
I'm sorry to hear Judy is having a rough time of it. Hopefully you will get good news with the next scan. I am praying for her and for Mark.
The only news here is my #3 son, Daniel, is "in love" lol. He has a lovely new girlfriend by the name of Kimmie. She is a sweet girl and they seem to be well matched. It's a good feeling to see your children grow into adulthood well and find their way in life. I am so thankful for having four young men who are such a blessing to their Momma and daddy. God willing, they will get married some day and give me daughters to fuss over lol. I love sewing little girl's dresses so much, hopefully they will give me granddaughters lol. I'm getting way ahead of myself lol.. A girl can dream. I won't get my hopes up too much though, with our track record we may be destined towards male offspring. None of the Manthey sons have had girls. Dave's sister had a girl, but none of the brothers did. It's funny because when we married my father-in-law told us it was up to us to have sons to carry on the family name because his brother only had the one girl. I told him in later years I had done more than my part to secure the lineage of the family name. He was a character. He loved to go to auctions. One time he bought a very large painting of a ballerina bent over tying her shoe. He placed in the living room and said if you went into the bedroom behind the wall you could get a better view lol. I miss him.
Well, I have rambled on long enough. Hope you have a wonderful day. I need to clean house since I was lazy yesterday. Give my regards to the family. Love Linda

I'm loving these updates! Linda - I can only imagine how I'd look and feel in a boot...I broke a toe on crutches a few years ago! I swear, I'm the antithesis of graceful. Look up clumsy in the dictionary and you might see my picture. For now, I'm using Advil and Ice...and resting it as much as possible. But I really miss running. It was helping so much with my anxiety and stress. As I write this, I realize that perhaps I need to shift my expectations and use my book-writing as an outlet...Ray is nagging me to get this book finished (he knows I'm deathly afraid at this point in the manuscript...I never realized I'd be gripped with fear over something I love so much. But I've learned it's a universal issue with writers, especially with their first published attempts.

The chicken story was hilarious. Animals of any description are such wonderful diversions. And I'm delighted your son has found someone - we were so relieved when Joel found "the one" and we love her like our own daughter.

Lesley, I'm thinking of you, Mark & Judy. I look back at the wedding photos and see the love between you all. Let that, and the promise of spring, uplift you.

Ladies, I'm struggling to read right now myself. I'm restless. I can't stick with it long and it has nothing to do with the quality of the book. But I know these issues usually come and go, so let's just tune in to our bodies, get enough rest, drink extra water, pursue other creative or interesting activities -- and the reading bug will strike again. There are so many new releases coming out every day that sometimes I just feel overwhelmed - my TBR is outrageous. My book buying has been out of control (sales and freebies mostly).

This past weekend, I managed to clean out and reorganize my pantry, and every time I open the door I get a surge of OCD pride. :-)

Now I need to get busy with the rest of my day. Take care and God Bless.

P

Jina Gibbs | 763 comments Dear Group,
Sorry I haven't been on. My strep and scarlet fever has really been difficult, painful and sometimes scarey. Hives from head to toes, fever, everything I try to eat tastes salty or has a metallic taste. Most of the hives have peeled and now my skin is raw or repeeling. They gave me prednisone and doxycycline to take. Prednisone does not agree with me and I have gotten puffy and swollen. Plus the steroids are altering my mood and I am extremely irritable and blow up at the littlest things. The scarey part of this is sometimes I have bouts of double vision or severly blurry vision and dizziness and nausea. I haven't been this sick in forever. Thank you for all of you who have checked on me. Y'all are the sweetest and greatest blessing a person could have.
Paula, sorry about the foot. Hopefully you will be back jogging soon.Isnt it your anniversary or something around now? Congratulations on the organizational project getting completed. It always amazes me that after spring /fall cleaning and you have more space and "everything in its place", makes a person feel calmer and neat and clean.
Linda I love animal hijinx. Thanks for sharing.
Lesley, I am praying for you and your family and I hope there is great news or progress in the healing soon. Please know you are thought of daily and cared for.
As for reading, I am reading the best I can. I have about an hours worth of stamina to read before I have to put the book down because of blurry vision or extreme headaches. They say that there is a slump in reading about this time because we are rebounding our energy from the holidays. I know when we get back in the groove we will catch up and not get enough of reading. Lol
Love to all,

Sorry I have been MIA , my hiatal hernia got really bad 2 weeks ago ,felt like trying to have a baby out of my chest, then last week I came down with some thing, my skin hurt all over ,I was weak ,no appetite, felt all of my 68 years ! Wore me out just going to the bathroom. But all is better now. Sorry to hear all you are going thru Little Sister Jina, have you tried oatmeal bathes ,is the only thing that helps Jen when she has hives. And if anyone has earn the right to be irritable it is you! The Mother Teresa of all Mothers. Do you have an iPod or a kindle fire ,you can listen to audio books on there too? I love listening to books when I am sick. Praying for You and the Girls! Lesley , I am so sorry Mark and Judy are have problems ! They are right there in my prayers ! My Brother Dave is going back in for more surgery in March, for hopefully something call a neo-bladder , where they take part of his small intestine and make it into a bladder ,he will not have to have a colostomy bag , but will have to teach himself to go every couple of hour because he will not have the urge to go.
Oh Linda , You made me miss our chickens, they were so funny! I know exactly what you are talking about, chasing the one with the one bite, leaving the rest sitting there. Wolf used to call biscuits " Chicken Crack" because they went crazy when we threw them in the coop. But Wolf has not missed tending to them with our temps being in the -20's . They did make us laugh all the time and I miss my Favorite Miss Lucy.
Paula, I hope the foot is doing better. I think we are all going through S.A.D. ,the winter blues, the only thing that has kept me a little sane is that I dug up my petunias and put them in my grow tent downstairs and they have bloomed all winter, and we are still eating my greenhouse tomatoes and they are so good.
Wolf and I had an eerie thing happen yesterday. We went into Helena to go shopping and left here about 9 AM , we decided to go to one of our favorite places for breakfast. So we turned off the main highway to Helena and went the back way ,closer to the restaurant . If we would have kept going down the highway we would have been in the middle of a big wreck ,between a car an Semi ,that killed 1 driver ! I mean down to the minute ,because I looked at the clock when we turned off the road. Then when we started home we went that way, there were parts of the car all over the place, the motor was sitting about 100 yards from the car ,you knew who ever was in the car was dead. The car drifted into the Semi's lane. Scary!!! Thank You Steve's for have such a great breakfast! Love , Lola

I will certainly keep these folks in my prayers. Tornados can cause such devistation. I have not seen any news this weekend. I came down with a stomach virus Friday night and spent most of the night and Saturday morning in the bathroom. Thank God that part is over but I have a killer headache now. I have been drinking water and eating jello and yogurt. So far so good.
So glad to know you were spared from harm by the tornado. A little too close for comfort for me. I have only seen one tornado in my life and that was when we were traveling during my teen years. My Dad recognized the danger right away and we out ran it. That is as close as I ever want to come to one. I pray the weather improves and you stay safe.
