Resilience
I am flexible. I am resilient.

Tuesday, August 9, 2016

As I ponder the spiritual quality of resilience, I am reminded of the beautiful willow tree that sways in the wind but does not break. The resilience of the willow tree is a powerful example of how it is possible to be stable, strong, and flexible. In order for me to be healthy and strong through any challenge, I must also remain flexible.

I remember to stay open to the support that Spirit offers me on my spiritual path. Rather than closing myself off, I trust in God. I surrender my thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes and gain a deeper understanding of who I am. I become more flexible and open in my thinking. Centered in God, I open the way for possibilities to enter my life.

I am flexible. I am resilient.

They are like trees planted by streams of water.—Psalm 1:3

Lola | 1001 comments Hi Lesley,
I don't know if you have ever heard of the talk show "Live with Kelly" any way they were talking about things that women in the UK crave when pregnant, one of the items was a chicken and strawberry sandwich. I told Wolf I was going to ask you if you had ever had one? We had never heard these. Love ,Lola

Hi Lola, I've never heard of that one & even though I like both chicken & strawberries don't think I would like to eat them together as a sandwich. There's no accounting for taste though.

Lesley | 669 comments For anyone whoes interested - quick update on my sister Judy, & son Mark on their fight with the cancer.
Judy has another chemo tomorrow & a scan to see progress next Wednesday, a week later than expected but she had to miss a week's treatment due to reactions, Keeping our fingers crossed for good news.
Mark had a fixed line put in yesterday, which he is calling "polly pic line": which will stay there for the duration of his chemo treatment. He had his first chemo session today - 5 hrs at the hospital & then he went home with a pouch the size of a tennis ball, which he is calling "booby ball" ; this will continue to be fed in over the next 48 hours. He has to have 6 of these sessions before he has a scan to see progress, but I'm not too sure of the timings yet. I have feeling he is in for a rough time.
He has started a facebook page- It'sall about me, lol- on which he is documenting his cancer story to keep friends & family updated, also hoping it my help anyone else going through the same journey. Love Lesley

I was thinking when we get back about turning my big garden into a raised bed. I know it is supposed to cut down on weeds but I am thinking more about not having to bend over so much, the old bones are getting OLD!!!! I will look at plans on line. Thanks for any help. Dear Lesley,
I am so glad you brought it up. I was afraid to. I didn't want to bring up something that might be a sore subject. But I have continued to have you and your family in our prayers. I was thinking, would Mark mind if "we" (as in members of this group) sent friend requests to his Facebook page. I would like to know his progress and be able to send him smileys and whatever positive comments I can during his tough journey ahead. Let me know if its ok.
Take care.

Dear Paula,
I know you are seriously swamped and I am amazed and so glad you find time for us when you do. :) It seems this group has taken a series of body blows and set backs as well as been busy as a one armed paper hanger this year. I know I am seriously behind on reading and for that I deeply apologize to the authors and the group. I just am having such a hard time focusing when I do read that I end up having to re-read a page or two to find where I last remember leaving off. Maybe after Heathers surgery is over and she is on the mend, then I can relax and concentrate.
The vandalism to our house is about a dozen farm eggs thrown and baked into the siding of the front of our house and whoever it was, threw the eggs so hard they broke two of our windows even though they had a screen on them. This is the second time with the eggs. You may remember earlier this year the inside of our mailbox was egged, (which is a felony). My husband has ordered cameras and we have made police reports so the police are building a case.
I had an idea though. I think we could all use a new "challenge". It doesn't even have to be for a prize, I think we'd like to do it for the fun and to see what each of us would do. Emily put out an awesome coloring book and a lot of us have commented here and there about the fun and therapeutic benefits of coloring. How about a coloring challenge? It could be a theme of fall, or books or you could pick a page that we download and print out to color and submit for blind vote or Emily or Emilys daughter can chose the winner. If there must be a prize I could donate an amazon gift card or something, whatever is agreeable to the group and lifts spirits, gives everyone a shot in the arm.
I've missed you.
Love,
Jina and the girls

Dear Lesley,
I found your Facebook page but it wouldn't let me add you as a friend. You can add me I am Jina Gibbs on Facebook. My picture has me with a terrarium with my pet Ball python Buddy behind me. We are praying hard. Heather read your post and has a question. This is from Heather. "Can I make Mark a bracelet make him feel better?" (If you think he'd like a Heather creation tell me what colors he likes.
Love to all your family,
Jina and the girls
Ps. She'd make one for Judy too but I think the name confuses her since we have 2 Judy's in our family and she's already made several bracelets for them so I think sometimes she forgets there is thousands of Judys and they arent her Aunt or her cousin. Lol

Hello, my friends --

I've been under the radar, and the weather, all week. I've managed to post the blog items I agreed to do, but I've had a surgical infection after a very minor procedure over a week ago. The antibiotics are helping, I no longer have a fever, but the wound(s) aren't healing well. I've been so tired, I've barely functioned, and spent too much time just poking around on Pinterest. I haven't even been able to read this week, and I have reviews that are overdue.

That being said, Jina - your life wins the prize for most chaotic overall, but you handle it with such grace I'm in awe of you. I hope all the girls are doing well overall.

It also drives me nuts to see holiday sale items out months in advance. Worse, people buy them early, which means that if I want anything special or out of the ordinary, it's gone by the time I decide to shop for it. I can't stand to shop for Halloween before fall, or Christmas before Thanksgiving. Like you, Jina, I love Thanksgiving.

Linda, I hope you can find something you enjoy doing from home. I really love working from home -- so much more than the crazy 1-hour commute I have when I need to go to the clinic. It's a beautiful drive, but it adds 2 hours to my workday and by the time I get home I'm not good for much else. When I work at home I feel a sense of control but I have to focus so I don't get distracted by the house, the dog, the TV, social media, email, wildlife outside, or the need for a nap!

I have made some major progress on my book recently, and I'm very excited. I have a deadline of August 29th to get a very rough draft finished, and to get a preliminary assessment done by my editor. However, I've had to postpone publication of Where Angels Sleep until the first quarter of 2017. It's disappointing, but realistic. I've seen too many examples of 'rushed' manuscripts in my years as a reviewer, editor and proof-reader - books that get released and then have to be pulled back because they're full of errors. I have to make myself be deliberate in this process. I've resigned myself to the fact that it takes as long as it takes to get it right. But I have also set some firm deadlines for the rest of the year, and the final draft WILL be to my editor on or before December 26th. *sigh*

Thank you all for continuing to step up for each other, keeping our community of over-worked, over-stressed mothers, daughters and wives in your thoughts and prayers. Know that you are all in mine, as are our amazing authors -- who are working diligently to bring us more new reads this year! God bless you, and Emily, Nicole and Christine.

I'm planning to start reading again tonight. I leave for a week on the Mendocino Coast tomorrow for a self-imposed writing retreat - until next Sunday, the 21st. I need a distraction-free, inspiring place to finish that first draft - and a break from the responsibilities of home and work so I can find the energy I need to hit that deadline. I'll be checking on my email, and the group, daily.

I also took a big step and joined the Romance Writers of America today...one more way of pushing myself past the fear and toward the goal. Do something this week for yourselves that pushes YOU toward one of your goals - and please tell the group about it! ONE small step is all it takes, and often the most we can do.

Take care, be well, stay safe, and God bless.

Paula

I found some coloring pages that have animals and books and all sorts of backgrounds. I can scan and email the pages to any who is interested and IF we do a coloring contest I will put up a $25 Amazon gift card. I will post a sample copy of one of the coloring pages to this site so check out the photo page later.

Glad to hear that you are improving. Quiet is always good. I start back teaching Monday and feel that things are not done so I will be trying to get things somewhat together. It will be a change as I have an 8 am class which is the first time that I have taught at that time at a community college. I will see how it goes. Summer has gone by too fast.
Jina,
I like the coloring pages.

All of you are handling a lot. My mom's mom, Grandmom Rose always said what does not kill you will make you stronger. She also said that life was not for the faint of heart. As I have gotten older, I have to agree .
You all handle things with grace.
Keeping all of you and your families in my prayers.
Have a peaceful day.

Hi, ladies -- good news, bad news - but my 'bad news' really isn't anything more than inconvenience.

Good news: I'm writing like mad, I'm off the antibiotics, and the coast is just what I needed after weeks of triple-digit heat at home, wildfires to the east of us, and general late California summer miseries. The coast is cool, breezy, sunny for a few hours a day, but mostly foggy - just the right atmosphere, with the ocean in the background - to spark the creative muse.

Bad new: the wifi coverage here is even worse than I expected. Yeah, it's free. But boy, it's spotty, slow and generally like the old fashioned tin cans and string. I'm not able to check my messages or respond as I'd planned - I have to go in search of a hot spot - and even then, sometimes things post, sometimes they just sit there and spin. Notifications are hit or miss - mostly miss. It's what I need for distraction-free writing, but it's aggravating when I really need to communicate. Again - inconvenience.

I had to take a break to answer a few messages, so it's back to the writing cave now, until probably tomorrow. Know that I'm thinking of you and looking forward to catching up as the week goes by.

xoxo
Paula

Lola | 1001 comments Hi All,
Wolf and I sold a small piece of property , so we decided to make part of the money ,play money ,we both got 500.00 to play with . So I went looking for a new recliner, my old one was killing my back, there is a board across the back that hits me right at the small of my back. Wolf and I traded chairs, but his is so old that the stuffing is flat ,it wasn't much better. I went looking for a fabric recliner, both the others were leather. I wanted something soft and comfortable , like a big teddy bear. The first place we looked ,I found him a big old Teddy Bear of a chair. Best it is made in the USA , the fabric ,this is their new fabric, just came out this month,it feels like micro fleece and was on sell for $499.00 ,so I got a whole dollar left lol. Now it is really going to be hard getting me out of my chair. This will be where you will find me all winter long, a good cup of tea ,a good book, and me ;) Hugs Lola

Lola,
Now you will just be snug as a bug, won't you? I think it is good to do something for ourselves every once and a while. I have a tendency to think of doing for others first and ignoring my own wants. It's just who I am and I don't even notice I am doing it. lol
I guess I just have a servants heart and I like it that way. It makes me feel good to help others.
I set up my sewing area yesterday. I brought back my mom's sewing machines and a lot of accessories when I came back from Oregon the last time. I want to start sewing. I love it so much. I want to do something fun. Maybe sew little girls dresses and doll clothes and give them as Christmas gifts to the children at the shelter or something. I don't know. I will look around and see what charities may need them. I have patterns for doll clothes for the American Doll Collection. That might be something I could donate to Toys for Tots. Some of the patterns have girls dresses to match the doll dresses. Sounds like so much fun. lol This from a mother of four boys. No prospect of grandkids either. Oh well. I will just let them live their lives as they wish. They have pleanty of time for a family.
Better go for now. I could babble on all day but I need to get busy.
Peace be with you my friend

"Last night I bought a sunflower to put on the windshield of someone I'm smitten with. After some consideration I decided not to since we had only been on one date, the night previous. Don't want to come off too strong, right? Anyway, I grabbed the flower on my way out this morning with the intention to give it to someone on my way to work so it didn't die alone. What happened next has left me changed in ways I don't even have words for yet.

While I was sitting and drinking my morning joe at the coffee shop (which I typically take to go), I saw a woman reading something with tears quietly and quickly sliding down her pale face. It was like there was a magnet in the sunflower that was being drawn to her, because I knew in that moment she was who I was going to give the sunflower to; she was who I had to give it to.

When I got to her table I said, 'hey, pardon me. I have this sunflower that I was hoping to give to someone special and that someone I had in mind didn't work out, but I can feel that you're special too, so I want you to have it.'

Before I could even hand her the sunflower, this complete stranger flew into my arms with tears flowing, and gratitude spewing, as if I was someone she once loved, and lost. It's what she said next that I'm still trying to grip.

She was crying because her fiancé had died the week before, just months before they were going to get married. On their first date he brought her a sunflower and from then on, got her sunflowers, never roses, because she was the light of his life.

Today, through me, he was able to show her that she'll always be the light of his life and how we as humans have a message to carry that goes far beyond words.

I'm shaken, awaken and feeling raw. You never know how much a simple gesture of giving someone a $5 flower will change their life, as well as yours. Life is about giving and being of service to others. I challenge you all to find a way to make someone else's life just a little bit brighter today and be of service. You never know the impact you could have."

Peace be with you all.
Linda Manthey

Linda (lindamanthey) | 413 comments I really miss our discussions ladies. I have been preoccupied with so many things this summer I just realized how much I miss our little group.
I am reading a new series by Barbara Hinske. (well it's new to me anyway) I just realized it originated in 2011. Anyway it is called the Rosemont Series. The first book is "Coming to Rosemont". I can hardly wait to read the rest of the series. There are four in the series so far " Weaving the Strands", "Uncovering Secrets", and "The Night Train". I found them on Kindle.
I never thought I would enjoy reading books on digital media but I have to say I love my Kindle. With my membership to Kindle Unlimited I can read all the books I want in the free read section or purchase just about any title I want to read. It makes it easy since I don't always have transportation or the funds to keep myself in reading material. Just goes to show you can teach an old dog new tricks.
Hope you all are having a great week.

Love to all

Hello, everyone!

I, too, have missed our chats very much. Things have been chaotic here after a very peaceful, distraction-free week on the coast. The dog got an eye infection, I had an MRI on my knee and am waiting to see if I need surgery, I had to rid myself of a Facebook stalker, and my website went down...down...down. No complaints - I know I'm blessed and our issues at home are minimal, just inconvenient! I got behind on book reviews and reading in general.

It's so good to hear the good news: families doing well, new furniture, grandchildren... and so many more! Thank you all so much for hanging in there through what has been a wild & wooly summer. I'm ready for the fall!! Curling up with books, hot tea and cider --- bring it!

Love you all,
Paula

Linda,
Thank you so much for sharing. It reminded me of something that happened to me earlier this year. A person who my girls and I love like a sister had been down and stressed. Her mother had passed away and she was having a difficult time. So Heather and I went on a flowers site and ordered her a real plant that she could put in her garden or wherever. We were looking at 2different ones as our favorites. One bouquet was daisies and sunflowers and the other was a potted yellow roses plant. Heather was adamant that we should order the yellow roses. So we did and had them shipped to her. A few days later I got an email thanking me for the flowers. She told me her Mom would always give her yellow roses. It gave me chills because I too had a feeling that a higher power or something beautiful had happened to make sure Heather picked the "perfect" flower. I am so glad the flowers brought her joy.
So thank you for sharing this story. An act of random kindness can change the world, one person at a time.
Sincerely,
Jina

Dear Linda,
I have a couple boxes of books I was going to donate to a long term facility but I could send them to you and whatever you dont want you can pass on to someone else or donate somewhere. Let me know if its ok to send you the books. I can send them media mail and its very reasonable.
Sincerely,
Jina

Dear Paula,
So sorry about your stalker. Stalkers are scary. We are still having problems with someone messing with our property. On Saturday the vandal came back during the night sometime. The jerkface removed 2 screens from our windows, one by the window they broke last time and the other was Sarah's screen for her window. I found one across the road in the sweet potato field. There was also a bullet hole in Sam's car door from a pellet gun. Our house windows are high enough it would take a small step ladder for someone to get up high enough to come in and we have a cast iron bed frame that is blocking the window from the inside so no one could escape that room out the window either. The security cameras should be here soon so we hope to catch them soon.
I too am looking forward to fall. I am planning to plant some trees and bulbs and want to be able to walk in the morning when its cooler.
Heathers surgery is Tuesday. Heathers insurance lapsed due to her being an "adult" instead to a child so I have to go to court Monday to declare Heather incompetent so she can still be considered an "adult child" and I can be declared her guardian. Then her insurance will be reinstated. I HATE that word incompetent! I cried and felt like the worst mom ever when I had to file it. But without it I cant legally fill out her paperwork or make the decisions for her. Please pray for my family, that the stalker will get caught, court will go well and the surgery on Heather Tuesday.
Love to you,
Jina

Oh dear Lord have mercy Jina. You have so much on your plate I don't know how you manage. If I were closer I would surely help out the best I know how. I guess my prayers will have to suffice. I know God will be with you and guide the judge in making a positive decision. As for the creep who is terrorizing your family, God can take care of him as well. I hope they throw the book at him when he is caught. Some people are just evil. I pray you will have peace that God is in control of every situation and He will meet our needs as He has promised. Be good to yourself and hug the girls for me.
I am blessed to have you as my friend.
