I haven't read it, but since I was born near the Chesapeake Shores and lived most of my life there, I should! A pet peeve of mine is when they refer to places on the Virginia coast in TV shows, but shoot the footage in San Diego -- Virginia Beach has NO HILLS in the background - it's flatter than a pancake. You'd think the guys that write NCIS would notice that...

Hi Ladies, If you are interested, Amazon.com have the Kindle edition of 'Willow Brook Road-Chesapeake Shores for sale at $1.99 as against $6.99. Sad to say even though I have a $10 gift card on my account it will not let me buy it & it is still showing £4.99 in the UK.

Thank you Paula for your very sound advice. I am praying and searching for answers. Your story is very moving and I am inspired by your success.
I know I need to find my passion. I am just scared. I have been through so much to get to where I am today and I don't want to do anything to jeopardize the progress we have made in restoring our lives to normalcy.
I know this is not going to be a decision easily made. It will take time and deep introspective research. I am very thankful for the support and advice I have recieved from all of the ladies who post here. I am feeling stronger and more confident as I look for possible solutions and ideas for change.

You put that very well, Linda - the teaching/learning cycle is everlasting. Then there is the proverbial leap of faith. I took that one yesterday - when I finished my clinic work, I finished and posted my official author website; and today Goodreads published my author page (this is a reboot of the old one, but at last my book has a cover).

I've been absorbed in grief and feeling lost. Having the book as a goal strengthens me, even though it's a scary process and I can barely string a sentence together right now. It's a leap of faith that I'll find the strength and discipline to overcome the fear of baring my literary soul to the world.

If you are interested, the GR author page is: https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...

And my official author website is http://paula-writes.com.

One step at a time.
Hugs to you
Paula

I hate it when Amazon does that. My UK author friends are always asking their US readers to check the price for them when they put a book on sale -- many times there's an error and I know how frustrating it is!

I've got to start reading Mark! Can't wait - but I've had a busy week so far. Time to pull back and do something fun... funner?

Thank you, Lesley! My goal is to have it out this fall - early November, because the story begins and has a heavy connection to the holiday season, so I thought the timing would be especially important. What are you looking forward to this weekend? For me, it's resting and reading. Ray has worked unthinkable hours this week, and we've barely had time to start, much less finish, a conversation. Fortunately for me, I enjoy my 'alone' time - but too much is too much of anything.

So tomorrow we're going to Napa Valley for the day. Saturday, I hope to clean my house. Sunday I want to write. We'll see how all of that works out on Monday, right?

Oh - and reading. I can't wait to start Mark! I'm really, really looking forward to his story. In fact, I think a glass of wine and that book are calling to me right now.

Laters, ladies!

Lola | 1001 comments Hi All,

Wolf and I went for our yearly wellness exams today ,we went last week for our Labs. And I got big smiley faces on all my tests, even my cholesterol levels are down. I haven't lost any height ,at my age they really start watching that. The Dr ask me if I have any Native American Blood ,I do, my Great Grandmother was full blooded Indian. She said that is why my bones are doing so good. I have also lost over 10 pounds .Wolf is having some problems with his blood sugar she wants him to start taking his insulin twice a day and to cut his cholesterol meds in half ,she said his level is too low, he lost about 15 pounds and she wants him to stop losing weight . I don't think I have ever had a Dr. tell me to do that lol, just like a man ,they can lose it so easy. I have to go for my Boob smashing next week, not fun, but I have to do it because I lost my Sister to breast cancer.

How is everyone doing in the east ? I saw all the tornadoes ,man they are scary , we saw 7 at one time when we lived in Texas. We are having some beautiful weather , we had all the doors and windows open today, that never happens here in Feb. It is suppose to be over 60 tomorrow. I think I am going to get started on raking the back yard , get all the dead grass and doggy gifts raked up. Wolf and Bill our SIL are going riding on their ATV's Sat. ,I am going to stay home and color my hair. I was trying to let it go white but no ,I like a little blond in there too.

I wish everyone a peaceful happy weekend! I am almost 1/2 through Mark, really enjoying it. I'm waiting to see how Mark can ever forgive his Father, the old coot!
Hugs Lola

Linda (lindamanthey) | 413 comments I am working all weekend. I am looking forward to Tuesday when I can relax and enjoy some quiet time. My #3 son has scheduled a written test to get his drivers permit. But other than that, I am kicking back and taking it easy. They split my days off so I have to wait until Friday before I get another day off.
Hope everyone is doing well. I got so bored last week that I finished reading Mark and reread A Callahan Carol. It has rained so much it is hard to get outside and do anything in the yard and I have come to a standstill inside the house. I'm broke till payday so I can't get bookshelves or anything else to continue my setting up house. It is coming along though. We will probably have to live with the pink carpet till next year. (it's mauve but my husband calls it pink, lol) And the kitchen will probably have to wait till summer. I want to paint the cabinets and it is just too wet here until about mid- July. One step at a time. Well my lunch break is over. Back to work. Have a great day everyone

Hello and happy weekend, all! Today is the day I catch up on at least 3 book reviews, if I can find the right words. And then I dig in and start cleaning this house, which has been neglected for far too long. I haven't read anything in the last several days - wanted to start reading Mark last night, but it turned out to be one of those days I had to go to bed early. So -- I'll be ready to start talking about it by March 1st!

Lola - great job with your wellness goals! Linda - I feel your pain around getting projects done. We have so many possible uses for our tax refund that it will never measure up to what we need. Our house was built in the 80s - the appliances are wearing out, the wallpaper in the bathroom would give you nightmares, and painting? OMG. The wood on the deck is starting to decay and we need so many energy-saving updates. I think that will have to wait until we sell our house in WA state. Because - Ray has GOT to get a car, and that's the priority for the refund. Everything else - the minor stuff we can do a little at a time. The BIG stuff -- someday.

I hope everyone has a peaceful, safe, dry, uneventful weekend. My family in southeast VA escaped unscathed, but others in the surrounding communities did not. Thoughts and prayers to all who were affected.

xo

Hi, Kay -- overall, I've been ok with the updates, but I wish they'd gone farther in making things easier to find and use. I am not a fan of the mobile app - it's so limited, I know they could do better in making it behave more like the web version. Change is traditionally slow on this site. Since it's owned by Amazon, you'd think it might be more responsive, but I think it must be the proverbial red-headed stepsister!

Best I not tick them off though - or my author page might mysteriously go down.... *eye roll*

message 970: by Jina (new)

Jina Gibbs | 763 comments Dear group,
On the subject of hair color, it amazes me how when I am feeling "frumpy" (not sure that's an actual word, but my mom always said it everytime she colored her hair) that adding some highlights or new color or hair cut makes a woman feel refreshed and vibrant again. One of my friends who has decided to embrace her graying hair has said "it's not an indication of old age, its an indication of wisdom. Thats my story and I am sticking to it!" I love her so. She has gone through so much. If the truth be told the gray hair is probably from her worry and stress but she stands proud and is always helping others even though she needs just as much assistance as those she helps.
My hair has been and done EVERYTHING, as a child it was cut just like my brothers until I was about 13, Then my mom did home permanent, the one she used was called Rave. Then during puberty my hair went from toehead blonde to reddish blonde, my mom didn't like the red in it so she tried coloring it an "ash blonde" during the summer. BAD idea it turned GREEN. Not pretty. So not pretty. Between the chlorine in the swimming pool I swam at everyday to the perm and new color I fried my hair. So we had to go to the salon and get a massive conditioner treatment and get a haircut to take off all the hair that couldnt be saved. I nearly had a buzz cut when all was said and done. I let my natural color be for many years after that. When I was pregnant with my first daughter Samantha, I got very ill. I had strep throat but the strep infection got into my blood stream and I got pneumonia and kidney failure and had to be in the hospital for a couple months since Sam wasnt ready to be born. They gave me steroids to help speed up Sams development. The medication and pregnancy made my hair darken to a dark brown. Then when I was going through my divorce and move to North Carolina, I colored my hair the same color as my toeheaded girls so if we got separated in a crowd people would match us up easily. I could post pictures and show yall the "timeline of Jinas hair" and y'all would be rolling on the floor laughing. I hope everyone is doing well. I will post a few more comments later.
Love y'all,
Jina

Happy UK Mothers Day, Lesley! I was in the UK a year ago today -- and I was originally supposed to be there again this week for a book signing. I withdrew from the signing when I decided not to rush my book - and somehow I sensed, as early as last summer, that my mom wouldn't survive the winter. I miss re-connecting with some friends there but I have no regrets. I just want to go back and experience your beautiful country again. And finish the book...!

I hope you have had a lovely day. <3

Jina, your hair color story made me laugh out loud. I was born a platinum blonde, but by the first grade my hair had turned to a lovely shade of what I like to call "field mouse". My mom was a dark brunette and my dad was dark too, but I got field mouse....a truly dull ash blonde. My mom wouldn't allow me to color it. I hated it. Plus I had natural curl when the rest of the female world had long, lush, straight hair. I felt like an ugly duckling.

Naturally in my adult life I rebelled. Tried to go platinum again and it turned solid white. Got it fried, as you did, had to cut it so short I wanted to hide in the house. I did blonde highlights for years and then in my 40's I went red. And loved it. It's been every length and cut under the sun. Even the old Farah Fawsett! Last month I cut it short and I'm loving it. But I no longer look like my photo on Goodreads & FB. *eye roll*

Currently I look like Pepe LePew --- in that I have a serious stripe going along my part and my color is overdue.

Yes, frumpy is a word. Look it up in the dictionary and my picture is there this week.

Next week I'm going to get it shaped up and go to a bright, coppery red for the spring and summer. I feel the need to lighten up after a long dark winter.

Hugs to all,
Paula

Lola | 1001 comments Happy Mothers Day Lesley!

I had to laugh Jina ,Paula and I all have similar stories ,my senior year in High School my Sister bleached my ,what we called dishwater blond " hair, then a week later gave me a perm ,needless to say it melted my hair to the perm rods. I had to shave my head. So for most of my senior year I wore wigs or falls as we called them. Until it got too hot on my head ,remember this was Houston Texas back in the 60's ,the AC wasn't too good back then. I finally stopped wearing them and one of my teachers (the asshole) changed my name to Larry in his class. Talk about a Teacher getting it wrong! Luckily for me I had a Great English Teacher ,and she put him in his place ! But the harm had already been done . And then the size DDD Boobs popped out and all the guys were no longer looking at my head lol. Glad I can laugh at it now! Hugs Lola

Linda (lindamanthey) | 413 comments Oh my goodness ladies, you are cracking me up. I was a blue eyed blonde in my teen years. Long blond hair down my back. My senior year in High School, right before senior picture day, my long time hair dresser convinced me to cut is short and have a perm. It was a disaster. I went from the hair dresser to the photo shoot. The next few weeks my hair turned in to a big wad of cotton candy. I was so mortified I cried. I just hated it. It took forever to grow it out again and I never let anyone give me a perm again. I found out when my hair is shorter it is wavy. I didn't need the perm. My lifetime best friend posted the picture on Facebook a few years ago. She thinks it is beautiful, I was mortified again. lol I started coloring my hair about ten years ago. I vowed never to be a grey haired old lady. I have always told my kids I am Peter Pan, I will never grow up. lol.
Hope you all are having a lovely weekend.
I went grocery shopping with my husband, ARRRRG. He always seems to think I am spending too much on food. It is frustrating when he is with me. Of course I am stubborn and like to do things in my own time and manner and he just has a different point of view. lol
My work messed up my payroll check this week otherwise I would have gone on my own. He had to pay so maybe that is why he was cranky. I think he saw that I am very careful about prices and I am a smart shopper. He kept saying he thinks another store is cheaper but I told him I like to go to the local market outlet first then get what I can't get there at the regular grocery store. The outlet store is only a few blocks from the house so it is not out of the way. I make a list then revise it as I find better deals at the store. I have raised four boys on a very tight budget, I think I know what I am doing by now lol.
I have bored you enough with that experience. I am going to make a pitcher of ice tea and sit down for awhile.
You all take care and I will be back again soon.
Peace be with you
Linda Manthey.

Lola | 1001 comments Hi Linda,

I don't drive so I have to do all my shopping with someone and I hate it too. I think that is why I do a lot of my shopping online, no one standing there tapping their foot waiting for me to decide which one to buy. lol I think it opened up my Hubbies eyes when he had to go shopping with me the first time, about how much everything costs now.

I am checking out paint for my bathroom. I found one I think is it , called Summer Skies ,from Lowes paint. While Wolf and Jen are gone to his Mom's in April , I am going on a spring cleaning fit and do the painting . We had the window man from Lowes here Saturday , we are finishing our windows . We started about 3 years ago replacing all the windows ,in stages as we could afford to pay cash. These will be the last, 2 in our bedroom , 2 in the kitchen and a new sliding door on the patio. YEA !!! Then this summer Wolf is replacing some of the patio floor boards and a couple of wooden stairs ,then we will paint the patio . I love the name of the floor paint we use, it is called Root Beer lol. That should take care of the major repairs we wanted to get done.

Sadie has an appointment Thursday to have all her hair sheared off, just like a little sheep, this will be her first grooming. Because of her broken leg we couldn't get her groomed last summer, so she is a matted mess.

Well I better go feed the OLD Man ! Hugs Lola

My mom never let her hair go grey. She lightened it over the years but that was it. If I thought grey would look good on me, I'd consider it - someday - but I'm pretty sure it would be a dull shade of subway rat.

It's finally sunny again today and I'm looking forward to getting out for a walk. I have to work for the next three days, up north of here about 45 miles. I'll be on my laptop a bit later with a question about Mark's story. Watch for it...! :-)

Wow, ladies -- this week has really kicked my hind-parts! I managed to update one chapter of my novel and send it to my editor, but otherwise I've been working a LOT at the clinic - I even have to work tomorrow, and I usually don't work on Fridays. The good thing is I feel 'useful' - if that makes any sense. The bad thing is I haven't had a minute where I felt like reading. I'm SO looking forward to the weekend. I hope you are all well, safe, and happy and your feet are dry! It's pouring here and we have flood watches all around us. Mud slides are closing roads, taking down trees - but we are in a very safe area, far from the river banks, and plan to stay close to home until the water recedes.

Hello, everyone -- it's been a quiet week in here, and that's the case, in part, because my work week at the clinic up north was long...productive, but exhausting. The commute is a bear.

I hope you are all well and reading on. If you have a chance, please update the group on what's on your mind and what you're reading.

I'm working through the books I have to rate, and I also have multiple reviews that are due soon, so I'll be reading at least two books this weekend. I also got some good feedback from my editor and am really excited to get moving now. I may post a link to the first chapter soon, on my Goodreads author page -- and see what kind of feedback I get from potential readers. I need to think about that, though ...

... in the meantime, counting down the days to A Callahan Carol, and then -- Reunion Pass!

TGIF - be safe, well and at peace.

Kay (kkfar) | 502 comments I have to say this has been a horrible day with technology at work. A total nightmare ending in two glasses of wine. My small 30ish employee business where I have worked since 2004 as the Business Manager sold to Corporate ownership in November. In the last two weeks Corporate has been "dropping lines" for their computer system, bringing in equipment and networking a training system so we can learn their software. Nothing has been put where it was supposed to be. Today we lost our phones and Internet several times, which the guys who are installing the new network said was not their fault. Spent two hours holding for our current phone and Internet provider and finally hung up when I reached home at 8 pm. No resolutions on any of the problems we have had and more added onto the original ones. One hell of a day and I am exhausted. Tomorrow I have 20 family members coming over. Really looking forward to the family reunion. Thankfully my husband did almost everything I planned on doing tonight to get ready for tomorrow. So very blessed and happy for the help. It is going to be great tomorrow after a hellish day today. Then I Have to get my taxes ready for the CPA. But tomorrow will be Great! :):)

I am so sorry for my absence. I want to thank those of you who have messaged me, and emailed me and facebooked me letting me know you were thinking and praying for my family and I. Its been extremely busy here getting ready for the next appointment at Duke the 24th. I have had to run my tail off getting paperwork faxed and taxes done and a bunch of phone calls to coordinate and organize all the companies, foundations, insurance, geneticists etc... Plus Sarah had a minor breakdown from worry and stress and her current anti depressant is causing more harm than good so she is to see a new psychologist the 23rd. A woman this time, which hopefully will make her feel more at ease since Sarah says "I dont want to talk to anyone but my pediatrician." Which her pediatrician is a lovely caring woman we all adore but Dr Mangun says Sarah woukd be served better by someone who has this specialty and has fresh eyes. So we will try. I am open to anything to get my daughter happy and sleeping well again, without nightmares invading her sleep all the time and anxiety a monkey on her back. I haven't had much time for reading although finished a couple quick easy reads at drs offices in waiting rooms the last couple weeks. Nothing really spectacular as my focus is off. I think I will be able to concentrate better once I get my daughter Samantha and my results on Thursday and find out if we too also at least carry the disease, whether we are symptomatic or not. It would answer some questions about my chronic low kidney function Ive battled for 25 years and chronic pain and the ringing in the ears and hearing loss, etc... I promised myself I wouldn't speculate. Just wait to be told for sure what they found.... or not. Love you all. Thanks again for keeping in contact and letting me know you care. Y'all are the best.
Hugs to all.

You are in my prayers and thoughts. The waiting is always the hardest part and getting paperwork done. One day at a time.

Melinda M (researcher707) | 592 comments I am still playing catch up but am only one book behind. Spring break was not a vacation but I caught up on paperwork and some cleaning out of files. thinking about all of you.

Jina,
You have nothing to be sorry for. Your family is most important and everyone here understands and cares for you all.
You all are in my thoughts and prayers and I will continue to lift up your family to the Lord for strength and peace of mind.
Be good to yourself and hug all the girls for me.
Peace be with you,
Linda Manthey

Well Wolf and Jen just left for Az. We got a call yesterday from his Mom's neighbor that his Mom had a heart attack. He talked to his Mom last night and it does not look good . So Jen called her Boss and she said to go . Last night it was packing and trying to remember all his meds and insulin .

Now I get to take care of the chickens , I am not looking forward to cleaning chicken shit lol. I also have to remember to check for eggs, Wolf got 6 the other day from 4 Hens. Keep us in your prayers. Hugs Lola

Your family will most definitely be in my prayers. Hopefully she will rally and begin to improve.
I feel for you concering the chickens. lol Dave bought 8 chicks last week. He has been researching and planning this for a long time. One of them died on Sunday. They are so tiny and cute. Dave said the breed, Bard Rock, are supposed to be very friendly. I really hope he is right. lol Any way it is his project and I will let him take care of them.
Take care of yourself and keep us updated if you can.
Peace be with you.
Hugs, Linda Manthey
