Oh, Ladies -- Goodreads is giving me a FIT!!! I can't post properly from my phone - I try to post once, and it posts 3 or more times - so yes, you guys best keep an eye on me! It wouldn't even let me delete the duplicates.

And, yesterday, it locked up altogether, on my laptop, as I was writing a review for a release day extravaganza.

I think I must have done something - or several somethings - to tick off the powers that be? Wouldn't be the first time...but I'm trying to redeem myself!!

lol. Maybe someone up there is telling you to slow down a bit. Freaking out the computer is a clear sign you are going too fast. lol I don't type that fast anymore. I was pretty good when I worked in the pharmacy, a hundred years ago, but I am out of practice. Don't burn up those keys girl, lol, you need to sit down with your coloring book and de-stress (don't think that's a word, sorry) I love mine by the way. I got some color pencils from Amazon.com that are all color, no wood, and they do not break.
Well the hubby is nagging me to get ready for work, carpool day. So I will go for now. Have a great day, I will check back in when I get a chance. Love to all

Jina Gibbs | 763 comments Hello Ladies,
Sorry that I have been mostly MIA. The girls and I were invited to a bonfire Sunday at a dear friends house and Heather and Sarah got adorable haircuts. The girls and I have been working on a project for y'all and its nearly done. For a hint it goes along with the whole new year, new and better year, setting goals and living positively. You'll soon see. More later. Until then hugs to all.

You're right, Linda...I realized today that I've been pushing too hard since before Christmas. I added "chill" to my resolutions. A coloring book is next on my list. I have the pencils. I'm sure it will help me de-stress!

Jina...I'm looking forward to hearing more about this New Year surprise!

*hugs* to all.

Kay (kkfar) | 502 comments I started coloring this past weekend. I really enjoyed it and didn't stop until I had 2 pages done. I got some color books and pencil for my daughter for Christmas because she has a lot of stress in her life and got me one too. It sure doesn't take much to get totally involved in it and I found I didn't think about things while I was coloring. So glad you told me about adult color books. I have now found several people I know have been doing this too. It is so much fun and I feel very creative with the finished product.

Hi, everyone -- the last two days have been crazy-busy at home and today I have to work out of town, so I just wanted to check in and say hello! I'm looking forward to settling in with Luke again tonight or tomorrow (I think I may have promised Ray we'd go to Star Wars tonight...) - I've finally caught up the reading for reviews due in the next few days...which is how I'll spend part of my weekend.

Also - please keep Jina and her family in your prayers - I know you do, anyway, but there is a special reason today. I saw on FB yesterday that Heather had a serious episode at the doctor's office and was being sent to Duke for additional testing. It was very frightening. I will leave it to Jina to share what she can with you after things settle down.

I'll be in touch later today or tomorrow - thanks for your patience while I try to keep my head above water.

Jina Gibbs | 763 comments Dear Group,
As Paula said we had a no good very bad day yesterday. Heather had an appointment with her cardiologist and while we were waiting in the waiting room, Heather collapsed. She was also shocked very badly by her pacemaker/defibrillator and was unable to breathe for a minute (slthough it seemed a lot longer to us). Nurses and docyors came running from everywhere. They got Heather responsive and in a wheelchair. Her vfib was at 389 beats per minute. When she came to she screamed and cried and reached for me for hugs. It was all I could do to keep my tears from falling. She finished her exam and they doubled her heart meds. They are slso sending the four of us girls, Heather Brooke, Sarah Faith, Samantha Dawn and I to . DUKE hospital. We are to see the specialists in Genetics medicine as well as the specialists who study Fabrys disease which tgey now suspect the 4 of us having. I have been on the phone all day answering questions and coordinating which Doctor still needs to fax w h at information etc... I have had such a massive migraine the last couple days. I am hoping this all happens soon and that we get a lot of answers. Thank you for your prayers and kindness.
Hugs to you,
Jina and the girls

Oh, Jina, that must have been horrific. But the fact that it happened at the cardiologist's office is some kind of miracle...she was in good hands. Duke is an amazing place and it sounds encouraging that you might get some answers. We will keep praying for you. Hugs to each one of you.

message 777: by Jina (new)

Jina Gibbs | 763 comments Thank you all for your prayers and support and kind encouragement. It has been rough since Wednesday. Heather is in pain, she indicates her shoulder( which of course is where the shock came from) , her back, her head and her eyes. We have made the couch up in the front room with pillows and blankets and soft lighting. It's one of the best rooms in the house as far as no drafts or glare from sunlight. She has a smart tv to watch which has Netflix, Roku, and lord knows what else. She could probably communicate with people on Mars with the darn thing. Little Bit our 2 yr old Jack Russell puppy lays with her a lot and brings her Little bits toys trying to share with Heather. Then she sniffs Heather head to toe, gives Heather kisses, turns in a circle and plops down resting her head to Heathers leg. I am having a hard time sleeping. I keep checking on all my girls-- making sure they are breathing etc.. I have a massive headache, probably from stress and being tired. On top of Heathers issues my husband Michael had bad news at the doctor. He went to get his DOT physical so he could keep his CDL license. His blood pressure is too high, he had a sleep study a few months back which indicated he has sever obstructive apnea so he was supposed to get a CPAP machine. Well, he's a man and a stubborn one at that and didnt get one then so now he has to. He has to get a CPAP machine and use it at least 4 hours every night for 3 months. Then he has to download the information to prove he is using it and take that in 3 months from now. Depending on the results and he also has to quit smoking, AND lose 25 lbs. So I am giving him bottled water with the flavored Motts apple, which he likes to try to get him off the 6-10 mountain dews he drinks a day. I am going to look into the water vapor ecigerettes and I had an appointment at a local gym this week. Since I am the cook in this house its up to me to have healthy meals. So I am working on researching Low Glycemic Index meals like nutri system uses. Im am desperately trying to stay positive, praying a lot, crying in private and keeping on keepin on. Thanks for your caring support. I truly need it and it lifts me up. Gotta run, hubbys home and hungry. Chili and hot dogs tonight. Not exactly healthy but i am working on a meal plan which will be healthier.
Love to all,
Jina

message 778: by [deleted user] (new)

Wow, Jina ... Just wow. Ray uses a CPAP machine and it's done wonders for him. He hates it but he admits he can't afford not to use it. He never smoked but he does have a wicked cola habit. He stopped drinking the ones with high fructose corn syrup and that helps...Mountain Dew is potent with caffeine and HFCS so if he can get off that stuff his health will most certainly improve.

I'm sure Heather is afraid and that stress makes her more sensitive to discomfort. Thank goodness for pets, they are so comforting.

The final point is you have to stay healthy to take care of your family. Can you swap off for a few hours with a friend or family member you trust to keep an eye on Heather and the girls so you can sleep? Ask for help if you need it. You certainly could use it and it will make your whole family healthier if you do.

Hugs,
Paula

Dear Paula,
When we first moved into this house in the summer of 2013, Michael switched from Mountain dew to sweet tea. He lost nearly 20 pounds that summer and felt better. Its just that tea is not easy to take to work. I have suggested to him a second opinion from an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist. Maybe he has a deviated septum like Sarah did or maybe he has enlarged tonsils or adnoids, it wouldn't hurt for a second opinion.
Talking with the cardiologist today on the phone, he was explaining that some of the girls genetic health issues can be traced to their biological father however some of the issues are definitely only genetically transferred to them from me. He told me that in no uncertain terms I have to at least be a carrier if not have a version of the disease that caused some of their issues. So all 4 of us are getting a complete profile done. He said that it could be as simple as our body doesnt produce a certain enzyme or amino acid that is critical for normal body functions. If so we could start an enzyme therapy or given a medicine which would help our body produce what we are lacking. It seems so complicated. I am just hoping with all my heart that we get answers and help. I have a terrible feeling that Heathers heart is getting worse. I dont know how I would survive if something happened to her. So trying to have faith and enjoy every day. Its truly a gift each day I have with my kids.
Hugs to all,
Jina

I hope he finds something he liked that makes it easy for him to cut back on the soft drinks. Giving them up entirely might be too much but perhaps he can swap out Mountain Dew for water or bottles of naturally sweetened tea and gradually wean down giving up all those things at once could be too much for him.

I was lucky .. After surgery several years ago I lost my taste for sweet drinks of every kind ... and I lost over 20 lbs. it's odd how our bodies do such things. Now if I could lose my taste for pastry and cheese...!!!

My fur baby got hurt last night, running around in the yard. We don't know what happened, exactly - nothing is broken (that much we can tell) - all we can see is a laceration on her paw, but honestly, I freaked out. When she cried out, my heart shattered and my brain froze. She's much better today - a slight limp, and she chewed off the bandage it took us 10 minutes to put on...! It is SO hard to keep a greyhound 'quiet' - today has been interesting, to say the least.

Hope you are all well and having a good Monday - I'm editing a manuscript between dog treats.

Jina - you continue in my prayers.

message 790: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, Brandi and Kay -- one thing about greyhounds? They are persistent. And with the addition of sharp teeth, they can gnaw through a bandage in seconds. She is much, much better tonight. We are so relieved. It's the oddest thing - I'm a nurse who's dealt with patients from preterm babies to skilled nursing homes. I've seen so much and done so much, felt so much that I nearly burned out. But, obviously, but not making a complete emotional mess of myself except on very rare occasions. I could have NEVER, EVER been a veterinarian. I cried every time an animal got hurt or went missing in Eternity Springs! There aren't enough Kleenex in the world.

Jina Gibbs | 763 comments Dear Group,
Thank you for your kindness and prayers. Please keep them coming. Its been a lot going on here. Today I wasnt completely in the toliet but it was circling the lid. From Sarah having fainting spells over the weekend and her heart racing and shortness of breath. The palpatations were supposed to be fixed with her heart surgery. We've been vandalized with eggs to house and our mailbox including inside the mailbox. The police came and took a staetement since thats a federal offense to mess with someones mailbox. The people that were stalking Sarah are still driving by super slow and followed Sarah home when she was riding her bike with friends. Heathers insurance isnt covering ANOTHER two medicines this month, my shoulder went out, its like 21 degrees here today so I am freezing my tuckus off. But I know tomorrow will be better. Today was a test. God probably said "Jina looks bored let's give her a challenge." Anyway, even though some things went crappy, I am still so blessed so here's to tomorrow. :)
Meanwhile, I was reading book from the car today, (I have books in the car, in my purse, by my bed, by my recliner oh just everywhere.) and I came across a sentence that bugged me. I cant figure out why this sentence bugs me but maybe you all can chime in. And yes, I am one of "those" type of readers, the type that edits and spell checks and checks grammer as I read. It's just something I do. So please help me figure out what if anything is wrong or out of place with this sentence:
"She had climbed the ranks of the police department the old-fashioned way, through sheer hard work and talent, and had had to prove wrong more than a few who assumed a woman of color was not their peer."
Maybe the sentence is perfectly fine and I am just off today but that sentence bugged me like fingernails down a chalkboard. Thanks for putting up with me and my eccentricities. Love to all.
Hugs,
Jina

There's nothing like a grammar and usage challenge to take your mind off the big stuff, am I right? I understand that sentence, but it is terribly awkward. There are so many ways it could have been edited to be perfectly clear. Unless you're a distracted reader, you should never have to read a sentence more than once to understand it. It's the author's job to make it seamless - with the help of an editor. (Making a note to check my own manuscript...!)

I can't imagine what kind of idiots would egg your house and make your life more difficult. Tests are one thing -- out of control jerks are another. I hope they catch the swamp-rats that did it.

Hug your girls for me - and do your best to take care of your sweet self.

P.

My goodness. What a time you have had. I know you must be exhausted. I am not the best with grammer, so I am not the one to ask about sentence structure. I always catch the spelling errors though, they drive me nuts.

About Heathers' medication, try to contact the drug company who manufactures the drugs and see if you can get to help with the cost of the drug. I have heard of drug companies helping patients who can not afford their medications.

As for the crazy people who are trying to make your life miserable, don't you have a restraining order against them? You should see if someone has a video camera you can set up to catch them. What a bunch of nutjobs.
I am praying for you all. Time to call out the prayer warriors again. Try to give it to God. I know it is a hard thing to do, but when I was finally able to do it, things were so much easier to handle. It took me quite a while to accomplish it. I would ask God to handle a problem and then go back and try to pick it up again. I finally learned to trust God to resolve my problems and just keep believing everything would work out according to His perfect will. Life got better for me and I know it will for you as well. God is good and He does answer prayer. We may not always like the answer we get, but it is in our best intrest in the end. May God bless you with His strength and in His mercy and grace may you find peace.
Pass out hugs for me. Your friend Linda Manthey

Jina Gibbs | 763 comments Hello ladies,
To answer the question about the restraining order, no but I do have a "no contact" order. The deputy that came yesterday was going to talk to the judge about a surveillance camera to put up on the lightpole to catch anyone tampering with our mailbox, see how many times the stalkers drive by and see if anyone comes to the house at night or what activity they can catch that isn't our coming and going.
That's a great idea about contacting the pharmaceutical companies about helping with Heathers medicines. She takes between 25 to 32 doses of medication daily so maybe they would help.
I forgot to tell you that we took Heather shopping with her gift card money to Walmart. She bought ANOTHER legos set, no surprise there, and the movie "Max" (it's about a german shepherd). I will probably cry when I watch it, I am such a sap when it comes to animal movies. I bawled my head off at the end of "Homeward Bound" and " Free Willy".
I dont know why anyone would target us. We mind our own business. I live by the motto to treat people as I would want to be treated. I dont understand destructive individuals. Oh well, it will catch up to them.
I hope y'all have a great day.
Sincerely Yours,
Jina

My favorite scripture is Psalm 46. I have thought of the verse "Be still and know that I am God" SO many times when I have been in despair. It is a reminder that I need to keep my hands out of the situation, and let God do His handiwork. Have a blessed day everyone. Peace be with you.

Dear Paula,
Love your term "swamp rats" !!! That gave me such a giggle. I pictured you as Zeva (sp?) Off of NCIS when someone messes with people she cares about. You so totally rock as Sarah says.
The book from the car so far has tons of spelling errors and its not just that, totally wrong words are put in where others should be. For instance they were talking about age and the phrase should have been " It's not that old" but instead it was "It's not that told". I have already found 11 spelling errors and 4 sentences with wrong words and I am only on page 44. I love this author and her books so will overlook the errors but it bothers me that she was possibly given a disservice by her editors and proofreaders. At times like this I wish I could email the author nd tell them how much I enjoy their books but that somehow the book was published with errors. I would come off as being a buttinski or trouble maker when really I just want their product represented in the best way. I have a couple friends who were teachers. They are avid readers and if they find errors in a book like I am talking about, they wont read another book by that author even if they enjoy the story. Ive known them to stop reading a book all together because of stuff like this. Has anyone else had this issue or similar issue.
Have a wonderful day!
Hugs,
Jina

I like to read "Cozy Mysteries" and I see this a lot in these books. I have been reading them on Kindle, so maybe it is a transcription error, but it seems to be common place in a lot of the ones I read.

Like I said, I am not great at sentence structure, but I know when something sounds wrong when read. And the spelling drives me crazy. Or words left out of a sentence.
I think more than one person should proof read a book before it is sent to be published. That way more errors could be caught ahead of time. I know at work, when we are removing an old ad to set the new one we walk down each others sections to make sure we did not miss any tags. Checks and balances so to speak.
Anyway since we have solved the problems of the publishing world, I can now go and figure out what we will have for dinner tonight, lol. Our refrigerator went out and I am scrambling for ideas that won't require perishables. It has been quite cold at night so we have a cooler in the shed to keep milk and eggs in. Just like camping, lol. Have a great night everyonel. Hugs to all

Hello, ladies -- today was one of those days when it came and went before we knew what hit us. I had a few appointments downtown - and lunch with a girlfriend - and then I went out and treated myself to the official "Outlander" coloring book, with the text by Diana Gabaldon and some really elaborate illustrations. I felt like a kid at Christmas. It will take me days to color even one of those pictures, but wow -- I'm looking forward to it!

It's unusual to find a traditionally published author whose books have so many spelling errors. I know there have been times when an indie author has uploaded the wrong copy of the manuscript and ended up with a version that wasn't ready for publication - and many rely on unpaid volunteer readers rather than editors to help them proof their work.

I've seen a few typos in ARCs from publishers also - and caught a few in best-selling novels. You can expect a few in an ARC because it's not the final product. In the final version, if there are just one or two minor mistakes - no big deal. But if they happen page after page after page, they can be so distracting that I can't finish the book. I probably wouldn't buy another one without downloading a sample first.

I've caught typos and punctuation errors on book covers, too - and under those circumstances I contacted the author. Both were grateful.

In any case, if I know the author, I'm more likely to contact them. If I'm reviewing a book for a publisher, I definitely contact the agent and mention the typos. Beyond that, it's hard to know who will be receptive to feedback - no matter how well intended it may be.
