SOLVED. Fantasy Thief Books that involves a guild [s]

Started reading this book in the fantasy section of Barnes and Noble last year and can't find it. What I remember is that it was a fairly large book, it was hard to hold the start of it open. It started with a thief that was searching under a floor for some coins to meet what he has to pay to the guild leader each month. A large fight happened above him and bug or rat was crawling up his leg while he tried to stay frozen to keep from anyone noticing him under the floorboards. The large man in the fight noticed the thief, but let him go. The thief saw one of his friends not make the toll for the guild and get beat I think. That is sadly all I remember, it was such a good book and I am kicking myself for not getting or noting anything about it. Please Help!

Long time since I read it, but reminds me a little bit of Trudi Canavan's Black Magician trilogy. First one: . Though the protag is a girl in this (maybe she pretended to be a boy at first? I don't remember). Perhaps it just reminds me of this because of the word 'Guild' though :/
