SOLVED. Fantasy, five weapons, new guy uses rope as weapon [s]

I read this in the 80s, maybe fantasy, maybe post-apoclypse. Warrior clans travel around fighting each other using one of the five basic weapons, sword, staff, club...

A smart warrior cant master any of them, so he invents a new weapon, rope. He also figures out the strategy to have your 5th best fighter fight their #1 fighter, so your other 4 would have the advantage in the other 4 fights. I thought the main character was named Cord or Kord, but googling that didnt turn up anything
