Morning! It has stormed all night, and so a flash flood warning has been issued. :(

No storm here, but it is a awfully grey and windy day. Ideal to stay in bed reading, but who can to that!
I've been a bit quiet lately sorry. You know those women you see at the supermarket or around that look so frazzled and have a swarm of children around them? Yeah... that's us.We're chick sitting at the moment for friends who have gone to Fiji. There are four of them. They are manic and don't stop for one second. Which is fine when there is one and two of you. Or two of both. With four, the chickens have taken over the house.
They are dorable, but my god. This is where I found them yesterday when I got home. There was a plant in that pot yesterday morning. No more. Replaced by chicken. They are in a gap as I rescued an aloe vera plant that has been thoroughly nibbled, and a chilli plant that had leaves and flowers that had been reduced to a stick. Note the decimated other leaves on the other plants.
They discovered the bookshelves last night while we were sleeping...
Black ones are ours, white ones are going home on Friday or Saturday. It's nearly Thursday...
Poor Rusalka. Sounds like you have your hands full. My baby cat is like that. /my blinds are all broken or have claw marks. This morning, I found my floor lamp on the floor, books from my bookcase on the floor. The dining room table bare. Had to pick everything up. But this a daily thing.
We had storms last night. The winds were so strong they've been named. That doesn't happen much here. Felt apocalyptic. It was so noisy on the boat. Love the chicks Rusalka . Let's hope they give you a rest these next couple of days.
I didn't know about those towns doing that Joan. Love it. I hate dog poo. There are a lot of dog walkers along the towpath and it's so annoying when someone let's there dog poo right outside my boat front door then doesn't clear it up.
Rusalka, the chicks are adorable if not a little hard on the house plants. They thought they were at a buffet, obviously. I love that the one chicken has claimed the one pot.
We used to have chickens, but they lived outside. My children would bring them in sometimes because to them they were like dogs or cats, but for the most part they were out. I can't imagine the chaos had they lived in all the time!Good luck Rusalka!
Janice wrote: "Rusalka, the chicks are adorable if not a little hard on the house plants. They thought they were at a buffet, obviously. I love that the one chicken has claimed the one pot."And how innocent they look! 'Us? No! We didn't do anything!'
The chicks are adorable, Rusalka! Our dog would have fun with them, chasing them, etc. We are supposed to get a rainstorm tonight into tomorrow :( I don't mind rain but our temps are all over the place here so it makes me nervous for storms.
The wind in my hometown (Spokane, WA) knocked down a ton of trees and there are thousands without power, according to friends on Facebook. My parents lost a few pine trees during one of the last wind storms, hopefully nothing got knocked down this time.
Amy's plants are all in the same condition, Rusalka, but hers are due to the kitten she got. I think the chicks would have to live in the bathroom during the day, while I was gone, if they lived at my house, or maybe in a large animal crate in the dining room. Are the white chicks teaching your black ones some bad habits?
Cherie wrote: " Are the white chicks teaching your black ones some bad habits? "This made me think that the white chicks are the proverbial black sheep. LOL.
It got stormy in my neck of the woods last night too. It was so windy all day yesterday and then stormed during the night. I slept right through it though. There were some branches from our neighbor's trees that fell, but nothing major. Temps are crazy as usual this time of year in Mississippi... we had our first frost of the season over the weekend and it has been back to t-shirt weather the last couple of days. Temps are falling now that the storm front has passed but it is still a mild 50-60 F for the next couple of days. Then this weekend they are forecasting lows in the 20's. But next week will probably be mild again. It is never constant here, back and forth, up and down with no rhyme or reason.
The visiting white ones are definitely teaching ours bad habits. We place them in a large box, but they are too jumpy now so they escape and run around. I just accept my house needs to be perpetually cleaned for 3 months. They will live outside Kandice, but these are only a month old and still need heat lamps (although obviously not all the time from this perch). The grown up girls will also kill them at the moment, so we keep them separated until they are full grown and can handle the hen pecking. 3 months.
I woke this morning to that one back in her pot, and the other one in the white pot on the left. They are slowly claiming a pot each...
Me, too. We had a chick at our house overnight once. When my daughter was in second grade her classmates took turns having the class chick stay overnight. That little thing seemed to be a pooping machine.
@Rusalka, I see! That makes more sense. When we first got them they were chicks and lived in a laundry basket in the house, but they soon went out to the coop we built. I forgot about that part and then ours never had clutches, so we didn't have chicks after the first time.I have to say, we also had 3 ducks and cakes made with fresh duck eggs are the best! We also had NO pests in our garden the entire time we had the ducks.
As for pests, when we first let our chickebs out of the coop they stsyed near the coop. Every day as they basically cleaned grubs and insects off the yard they would go a little further and a little further. Tou also won't have snakes near the coop which is by our house so no snakes near the house. At least in New York where we have normal size non piisonous snakes. Rusalka probably has chicken eating snakes.

One of my coworkers has made her husband start collecting the eggs from their chickens because snakes keep going in to eat the eggs. And even though chicken snakes (also called rat snakes) aren't poisonous, she's still scared of them... and I would be too!
LOL! The chickens in California probably keep them as pets, I mean you wouldn't want to kill a snake ;-)

They are pot-ty trained now...
Those sounds really cute Rusalka, I never raised little checks but I sure raised other little birds! Used to put them in a box with very high ""borders?!"" Edge ? So they can't escape and go around hiding behind furnitures or under them in other cases!
Hah Travis, we haven't had snakes in our yard yet (*touch wood*) but chickens are supposed to be able to kill them if they are quick enough. It's a case of eat or be eaten though. The chickens poo everywhere. You have to clean up after them all the time. They are very much poo machines. At the moment we cover all couches and tables in sheets while we are at work, and then at the end of each day set the robot vacuum cleaner going. Easier while you are at home and just clean up after them as they go with a tissue or such.
You can "potty" train (toilet train) chickens. But we haven't had the time nor patience for it.
Urgh, Mariab. I think groan worthy is the best compliment for a pun :P
Chicks loose in the house reminds me of a Gilmore Girls episode! "That Damn Donna Reed" in point of fact.I feel like I've been away for ages, checking up here and there. My project is on-going at our remodeled location. I'm going up again tomorrow and Tuesday. I really hope that Tuesday is my last trip north. The week after the holidays they are finally setting up remote access, so fingers crossed I can do any more fine tuning from my warm office. So glad the weather decided to drop below freezing the week I get to work outside!
Other than that, I got to have dinner with my niece (who's 5 years younger than me) and her two kids on Monday before they headed back home to Alaska. Then on Tuesday, my nephew took me to a hockey game - and despite falling asleep in the 2nd period, and a goalie who couldn't seem to remember how to stop a puck, we ended up winning 5 to 4 in the final 5 minutes of the 3rd period. Oh! And, beer was only $2 even if it was Canadian. LOL.
I think I read somewhere that healthy birds, of all types, poop every 20 minutes they are awake. That is a LOT of poo!
Sounds about right. And now times that by 4...The little white ones have gone home. It now feels very quiet :( But our ones are loving having all the perches to themselves again.
We had a great day today :) we took a drive to see another waterfall and to also see a covered bridge where there happened to have a Love sign. These love signs are all over Virginia and all are different designs. Our goal is to see all of them :) a few photos from our day.
Nice pictures, Stephanie. I really like the one inside the covered bridge. I have this thing for silhouettes.
Yes i like your pictures too Stephanie. We had our first frost this morning. Looks pretty with the sun shining on it. It's going to be -2c tonight. Winter has arrived.
Thank you, Sandra and Sarah :) Brrrr, -2! Does it get much colder, Sarah? That is too cold in my book for sure :)
It varies Stephanie. A few years back it went as low as -10c but that's the coldest in my lifetime here in the UK. We're apparently in for a cold winter this year so we shall see what happens.
GR's today recommendation to me:Because you have read Pride and Prejudice you might enjoy
Seriously?
Sometimes it's hard to believe this people makes so much money selling books.

I mostly find those GR recs to be more amusing than helpful.
Kandice wrote: "I mostly find those GR recs to be more amusing than helpful."I agree. I get all the time really good recommendations from real people here, but never from GR itself. Whatever is the algorithm they use to recommend books, it is dreadful.
I've been meaning to share this link.http://nationalzoo.si.edu/animals/web...
The Giant panda at the Washington DC zoo had two cubs awhile ago (one passed away :( ). They have a web cam on the pandas :) it is addicting to watch them. Very entertaining. I know some people do not like zoos but I find them educational but I do feel bad for the animals because some zoos do not have enough room so their enclosures are tiny :( the DC zoo though and the one in Omaha, NE is pretty nice for the animals, in my opinion :)
